Coming of age stories also don’t have to involve literally physically growing up. Mob Psycho can technically be a coming of age story in the sense that it’s about Mob’s journey through adolescence and his gradual growth into becoming a more mature person. It’s one of the main themes of the show. Even though he stays in middle school, he grows quite a bit.

"esper" is actually a generic term, Mob Psycho didn't invent it. It's mostly just used by Japanese media instead of Western though. We just use words like "psychic", "telepath", "empath", etc.

From what I understand, esper is indeed derived from ESPer, so it originally only made sense when discussing psychic phenomena based around extra sensory perception. For the most part the regular folk can't see anything, unless there is a large enough power behind it. The Scent-Ghost guy for instance was visible because he was strong enough and he wanted to be seen, but his death-confession spirit mode wasn't visible to the girls. Usually if it's psychic-based the regular guy won't see it, unless there's some physical aspect to it, or if the psychic/ghost wants it seen. Mob has no interest in showing off his abilities.

Just so you guys know, the process that the really cool visual effect they use sometimes, like in this episode with the Scent Ghost returning to his true form, is done in a paint on glass animation style, where they take glass sheets and paint on them with oil paints to create the animation frames, and all of them are done by an incredibly talented artist whose name is Miyo Sato. Her work appears throughout the show, namely during supernatural bits, and she also animated the ending credits sequence for the first season. :)

The thing about gettin bored of Psychic abilities, in this stage of Mob's life he has nothing else about him that is interesting, yes, he can do amazing things but if you want to have a conversation or share interests with him, he goes numb to boring in seconds, and is not his fault in this case, he has poor social skills and that something a lot of people and kids have. But in real adult life this phase is crucial to development of personality and interpersonal interaction, maybe you can run fast, draw really well or fuck real good, but if you can't have a nice conversation or know how to mantain a friendship or a relationship after you are fucked if you want to have a last long relationship or interact with someone outside your confort zone. Having an amazing skill doesn't replace a personality

I think the difference here with Mob's crush Tsubomi is that Mob was only showing the telekenesis to Tsubomi at that time and everyone was probably admiring the runner, because he was no secret unlike the ESP... so it's natural for a kid to get swayed by what's considered popular. If mob showed off his skills and had a lot of attention, then Tsubomi would be more likely to feel special for getting his attention.
