Wow, what a job. I learned something new today, thank you. We had an unusually cold Christmas Eve and Christmas Day here in the Asheville, NC area (got down to 1 degree F) and our local power company decided to do rolling black outs so that the grid wouldn't totally go down during the increased demand for electricity. What they failed to account for was the fact that cutting the power caused pipes to freeze and break and thousands of homes and businesses are now saddled with the cost of plumbing repairs. Many are still without water nearly a week later. The backlash against the power company and local municipalities is pretty intense right now.

@aaronneumeyer5572

@@dougfredricks2017 What made it frustrating for me is that I installed a whole house generator this year to keep everything running. Despite losing power and having the generator power up to keep us warm, Duke activated the load control device on my heat pump anyway which prevented both the regular and emergency heat from working even though we were zero load on the grid at that time. Not worth the $30 credit/year. I will be calling them next week to come take it out.

@@aaronneumeyer5572 a few weeks ago residents over 30000++ lost power in Moore Cty. NC due to a domestic terror attack on a substation. Granted I believe that attack was contrived; in the case of Duke Energy someone there has the IQ of a Moonpie. Rhetorically what is a electric car owner to do when Grid goes down... 😒
@USNveteran
@USNveteran 2 жыл бұрын
We are also in NC and were victims of duke energy's hijinks. The predictions for the cold snap were out for almost a week before it happened. If duke even thought they were going to have to black people out they should have at least given their customers advance warning so preparations could be made. They sure don't have any problems getting their bills out, and will cut your power off in a heart beat if you don't pay. I had to scramble on Christmas Eve to get extra gasoline for my portable generator as well as kerosene for my heater & extra firewood. I still haven't been able to get on their website as of yesterday to voice my displeasure. Guess there are quite a few unhappy duke customers. Think I am going to put solar panels on my house. When I was a kid living in Cupertino, California we had snow once about every 20 years. We weren't used to it and didn't really have the clothes for it but it was sure fun that it happened in my during my adolescent years and I got to experience it. My Mom really amazed me because she came from Oklahoma and knew snow very well. She took a bowl of snow into the kitchen, and came out with Ice Cream. As cold as we were the Ice Cream was great, even at 7:30 in the morning. I would have missed it if my buddy from school who had a paper route and was up every morning at 5 was up when it started, came and woke my whole family up. It all melted pretty fast when the sun came up because it was only about 3 inches deep. Something I remembered all my life and I'm 71.

Looks like the moral of this story is to have those outlets under cover & the generator in a shed of it's own - anything you can do to prepare for such burying amounts of snow ! And If the outlets & generator were under a roof you likely would not have to dig them out at all or at least you could start everything up without that effort - dig out after the fact ? Always more you can do to fix the worst outcomes & we learn all the time. Glad you finally had a warm house to retreat to. In my household I would have beeen out there digging too - and I'm an 82yr old female !

This might be the beginning of judgment. If you are a Christian, pray about this. If not, now is a very good time to believe. Things are going to get very very bad. I believe this is all leading to the mark of the beast. Now is a good time to believe in Jesus. I know from personal experience that Jesus is real. April 9, 2021, before going to bed, my vision went black for a quick moment, and then I saw in gold letters: Thus saith the Lord. About four hours later, April 10, during my sleep I heard: Prophet. Tell them I am coming soon. 3-5 later, at 1235 AM, our area had a small earthquake registering 3.1. Oct 26, 2020, I heard - Biden Harris July 31,2021 I heard - Stay in the Word. Aug 1, 2021, I heard - Do not fear what is coming. Aug 9, 2021 - Surge. Isolate. In 2019, I heard - famine and plague. Jan 26, 2021. Heard - War is coming Shawna. Better prepare. Prophesy. Best love ANYWHERE! If you want to accept Jesus, admit you are a sinner (we all are), believe in Jesus and that He came in the flesh and that He died for you (well worth it), call out to Him to save you. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son so that whomsoever believes in Him may not perish but may have everlasting life.

Cheap insurance is a Kerosun heater and two 5 gallon cans of kerosene. It's more than enough heater to keep a house alive if you move it from room to room. I speak from experience making it a week during a power outage. It'll take more than 10 gallons for a week. Kerosene will also last longer than stated in a sealed container.

With a sudden bomb blizzard, perhaps consideration should be given to the generator; a temporary wooden box structure with two pipes, one for fresh air intake and the other a tightly clamped exhaust pipe. Both pipes well above anticipated snow height with a U bend on top to prevent snow depositing inside each pipe. Maybe temporarily extending those two pvc outlets too?

I think for storms id have some pvc that is 4 foot long that i could attach to the exhaust and intake for your furnace and hot water that would extend the exit for the pipes up four feet that you could just slip on the pipes and take off once the storm is over. At least that way you wouldnt have to dig them out constantly and you wouldnt lose you heat or hot water. I portable windbreak with a cover on two sides for the generator would stop the snow from drifting over the vents in the generator.
@maraudermitchelli
@maraudermitchelli 10 ай бұрын
A friend of mine did the pvc extension and his heater shut off due to the resistance caused by the additional length and elbows. If you're within the manufacturers guidelines for distance to the vent outside I think it would work. I like the portable windbreak...I should study that. Thank you and be safe.

Things that annoy me about this...Why is the generator not in a shed with exhaust routed through a stack in the roof and hooked to an automatic switchover and the natural gaslines? And why would furnace vents be at ground level and not out a flu through the roof? That's just irresponsible design for the Buffalo area climate.
@BillAndersonNS

Could you build a plywood box to cover the furnace and hot water vents? 5" high x 3" wide x 1" deep should do it, place some stones on the top- to keep it from blowing away

Love your preparedness! Considering the direction of most storms through your area (blowing from west to east, would moving your generator to the opposite side of the house help eliminate this in the future? Or perhaps building a barrier, like a wood privacy fence to prevent the drift from reaching the generator?? I can't see the other side of the house, but I suspect it doesn't have as much blown snow, just asking...

Ok just to let you know where I'm coming from, in September I was standing in 2'6" water in my house waiting for hurricane to pass and water to drop. So I don't know the snow issues but just a question, why no sweeping 90s and take the carbon monoxide vent up just under the soffit. Doesn't carbon monoxide rise. That seems allot funner if there was Christmas lights up and warm eggnog with some baileys and maybe some Nat King Cole Xmas music playing. Way funner than dragging the house contents out so Corona variant #72 doesn't grow. Ok jokes aside is there a reason for low lying vents??? I watched a vid from a guy in Buffalo do the same as you and wondered the same.
