5.56 vs 7.62x39, AR15 vs AK47, it doesn't get more classic than this! Today we're going to see how the two most widely used rifles stack up in their ability to punch through wood, concrete, and steel plate! I even brought some M855 green tips to test vs the standard 5.56x45 full metal jackets!

Me too, just bought a CA BFT-47 and I love it, it’s a great rifle for the price in my humble opinion, in fairness I’ve only put roughly 300 rounds through it so in terms of guns I’ve barely started breaking it in. It’s done me great so far. I’ve had 2 double feeds, which could just be breaking it in, or the mag, or maybe it is an overall issue, only time will really tell.

Truth of the matter is 5.56 is like swinging a hammer and 7.62x39 is like swinging a bigger hammer. People like using the played out accuracy difference but truth is if you can’t hit a man sized target you probably need more training. Even veterans have preferences on both. I’ve seen veterans that swear by both in battle situations. As I am a well trained veteran myself. USN SEABEE for life! All a matter of personal preference and yes I have been battle tested with nothing to prove. Just my opinion.

CA sells the American made BFT-47 for under 1,000. I love mine so far, though I’m only about 300rds in. Most people in the AK community love to crap on CA because they did have bad QC in the past. But most of the big heads in the AK guntuber community have done tests in the last few years and haven’t had many negative things to say about it. Not saying it competes with the expensive imports, because it just doesn’t. But so far it’s a fantastic rifle for the price.

My dad collected AKs for 30 plus years and when he first started getting them he said ARs were over a grand and the AK a couple hundred bucks and that’s why he got AKs. Now those AKs he got are worth 3-5 grand for his Chinese and Russian AKs and the bushmasters back then can be had today for 6-7 hundred bucks. When he passed my brother and split his collection. I’m sitting on a gold mine but I can’t sell them cause he loved em so much. The Steyr maadis we’re his favorite and the Chinese spikers close second.

I was in East Berlin in 1990 right after Reunification. Came across a former Soviet arsenal. The new owners were a bunch of drunk East Germans soldiers. The Soviets left their toys and took their personel. AK for sale:$5. Ammo box:$5. Everything:$5. East German AK's had this odd color for the stock and foregrip. Reddish color with little nobs. These were well built guns. East Germans are very precise machinists. The only reason I didn't buy a truckload of "souvenirs" was I didn't think US Customs would accept my receipt from Hans and Franz. When my Dad was in Vietnam the US was introducing the M16. He wanted to use the AK. He had used them in Germany. Got familiar with enemy weapons. Not allowed to use AK. Got an FN "L" from the Australians. Not what Uncle Sam gave you.

@@waterboy239British wanted NATO to go with .277 diameter bullet cartridge they designed following WWII. The BC varies a little in any caliber, as mass and design may vary some. Remingtons highly accurate and soft shooting 7mm Rem Mag is .284” (circa 1962) with Winchester’s great .270 (.277” circa 1935) are in same ballpark. Ballistic coefficients of both are very high. So is true of 6.5mm, ex: 6.5x55 Swede and 6.5 Creedmore. Before WWI it was difficult to make tracers and certain desired bullet constructions in smaller than 8mm or .30 caliber. Today that is no longer necessary. My choice for a new US military caliber is the 6.5 cartridge. I have several mdl 96 Swedish Mausers that are super accurate and smooth shooting. Maybe 160g pointed boat tail.

The AR needed some modifications to fire cheap Russian ammo but once I got that squared away, yep, love the AR as well. 5.56 looks like a performer as well. Either one will make a target expire so I don’t really understand the heated debate. Use your 5.56 for plated vehicles and your 7.62 for block wall demo.

You'd want armor piercing ammo for that of course, but I'd be very skeptical of what 5.56 AP could do on anything thicker than a windshield compared to 7.62 X 39 ditto. In a book I read a very brave, and very clever British PMC in Iraq was in the passenger seat of an unarmored Suburban with clients in the backseat asleep with the driver going flat out at all times! All of a sudden a BMW full of terrorists tried to run them off the road to kidnap his clients. But the Brit had an AKM folder with 30 rounds of AP. He picked just the right time to unload to take out the driver of the BMW as he tried to pace their vehicle and pulled alongside. He didn't roll down the window or even fire through it, he unloaded it right through his own door to take out the BMW driver. Turned the driver's noggin into pink mist and that was the end of the story. I wouldn't want to try that with an M4 regardless of ammo, would you?

How did the AR get the win on the steel targets when with full metal jackets both rifles were only able to penetrate the quarter-inch Steel? If you're counting the penetration with the green tip, then it shouldn't count unless the test is made Fair and an equivalent is used for the AK, like using a penetrator for the 7.62x39 that is also known for being reliable on hard targets.

Wise of you to point that out. Over the years there have been many writeups and videos that purports the power of a particular ammo round, with how it can break apart a cinder block; which, in reality, was nothing more than theatrics. The work I've done with cinder blocks on construction projects has shown that such a block can break apart from a four-foot drop onto hard pavement.

@@RoboticsSorcererSame here, man; I’ve had mine for about 3 years now. That rifle is just a winner - plain and simple. Consistently knock 6” steel plates at 300yds w/ only a red dot and sling. It’s my favorite, and all of my friends favorite gun to shoot.

I've seen several other videos to wear the AK does go through 3/8 metal versus yes quarter inch both Bullets go through so you tell me if I find the video I will try and send it to you just Google it and you'll probably run into it on KZbin somewhere

I've shot at 3/8 a bunch and I don't think it's ever gone through but I have no bias. I own all of these guns, I really don't care which one wins.

@@RuggedAdventures Well so do I and I think the AK is the better weapon don't get me wrong I have a 556 sniper rifle and I also have AAR15 pistol and it is a good round it's used by all the military I know I'm X military it's used throughout the world in-law enforcement and everything and it's a good gun but then you've got to remember all of Russian China Middle East they all use AK so.

Why didn't use penetrate a rounds (green tips) for all of the video???
@RuggedAdventures
@RuggedAdventures 9 ай бұрын
Because I didn't have them for the AK and I've had mixed results with the slower m855. 55grain 223 has penetrated metal that the 62 grain green tips didn't.

Ya see, KZbin really, really doesn't like full auto. Not only will they not monetize it, and these videos aren't cheap to make, they also don't push the non monetized videos. If you look in my channel I have a bunch of full auto from mp5s, to aks, ars, Thompsons, etc with like 300 views.

Excellent presentation and explanation. Your testing videos are very valuable for those of us seeking to purchase firearms. My only recommendation is to please invest into some quality ear protection. When you said you did not have that ear plug in all the way, bothered me. I am 64 and messed up my hearing (I think) by not using quality hearing protection when shooting guns.
