Old time rural home owner here. Had 22 mags for over 4 decades. Woodchucks, beavers, raccoons, skunks, foxes, showshoes, all have fallen to my 22 mag. I use 40 grain HPs. Winchester Super X for years till the plandemic when I couldn't find any, so switched to CCI maxi mag and am very happy with them. I would not change to 17 personally, but If I had the same fields that you are shooting in I might. My longest shots are right around 115 yards however, and I have never held over. FYI Up here in Maine you can actually legally hunt deer with 22 mag. Not that I would, but if push came to shove and that's all I had, nice to know.

The idea of the 22WMR design replicated a 22 Hornet ballistic performance. For use hunting wild turkeys and not destroying the meat for the table. The loaded 40 grain bullet traveling a below 2,000 feet per-second work the same as the hand loaded bullet in the Hornet. I used the 22WMR for the past 50 years for groundhogs, Turkey, Fox, Bobcats and a few coyotes. The bullet is a key to the performance choice that makes the 22WMR a more versatile cartridge. I tested bullet designs and weights from 50-grain solids to 30-grain bullets. All of them will produce essential accuracy for the task needed. All the main manufactures produce 22WMR ammunition. Federal used a Serra 30-gain hollow point bullet that I found preformed best for groundhogs. The 17 has limitations for use where the 22WMR is still today a more versatile hunting rimfire cartridge. However, the New the .17 Winchester Super Magnum cartridge would be a choice bettering varmint hunting extending the range to 200-yards over both. 🤔👍
@heathhalfhill64012 ай бұрын
The 17 HMR has its place for sure but so does the .22 WMR. The .22 WMR with Winchester Supreme 34 grain HP is a wicked combination on anything up to 50 lbs. The 17 HMR is a flatter shooting round but the energy falls off at distance quicker than the 22 WMR. I knew a guy who is now in jail for poaching deer with 40 grain semi jacketed hollow points in his 22 WMR and he claimed to have taken neck and head shots on whitetail deer out to 200 yards before he was finally caught. Another guy has a 17 HMR and he says the same as you in regards to the 17-20 grain rounds for it also. Both are great rimfire cartridges. For the cost I will keep my 22 WMR but will be getting a 17 HMR in the near future. I'm in no hurry because I fell down the rabbit hole with higher end PCPs for the past 8 years and enjoying the super cheap cost per round with the same accuracy out to 100 yards I get with my rimfires plus no noise is also a super nice plus. Love your videos bud. Stay blessed and thanks for the showdown between 2 really fun cartridges.

I have used both .22 Mag. and .17 HMR on Ground Hogs. Hit a bunch with the .22 and all but one made it back to their holes. (Blood, but no body.) With the .17 HMR, none moved more than a couple feet. Most dropped where they stood, DRT. Last year I put down 52 Ground Hogs with 52 shots, and missed one in a 35-40 mph cross wind at 95 yards. Made up for that miss by getting 2 with one shot later. For "Whistle Pigs", the 17 HMR with 17 grain Vmax is the "King of the Hill". Stopped using the .22 Mag. for this type of hunting all together. All shot were 210 yards or less with no hold over with the .17 HMR. Although for the 210 yard shot I did hold along the top of his back. The .22 Mag. might be better for Coyote, but I have put down several with the .17 HMR., again DRT.

The 22 mag is rotating at 113,000 rpm, whilst the hummer is rotating at 212,000 rpm. IF the bullets fragment equally, consider the impact of those individual fragments. This is why you see unreal impacts with calibers such as the 17 Ack Hornet, the 17 Mach IV, the Tac 20, and the 204 Ruger. Most all of them have the higher twist rates to stabilize the smaller pill. This translates to significantly different downrange performance. Its instant. Results in fewer wounded animals. On that point alone, I set the mag aside.
@exothermal.sprocketАй бұрын
RPM has nearly nothing to do with terminal effect. Rotational inertia on a groundhog through 2 inches of flesh versus hitting it with a lead round ball? Tell me the amazing difference.

I have a CZ 452 both in 17HMR and 22 Magnum. My experience on foxes is that the 17HMR actually kills a lot quicker inside of 100 yards. It's as if the 17gr pill enters and explodes like a grenade. What I like about the 17HMR is that it shoots like a laser beam out to 100 yards requiring zero hold over. The 22 Magnum is also good but occasionally shoots right through. I also use the Hornady V Max for both rifles. Great video and thanks for sharing.

We restrict our range on them to 200yards when using the Marlins. Mine does 3/4" and my gopher buddy's Marlin does 1/2". At 200, we can still get chest and head hits with those rifles.

I think it comes down to philosophy-of-use. .17hmr seems almost unquestionably ideal for rodents at distance. In a broader, survival-oriented application, however; I suspect that hunters can still take rodents with .22mag, but they can also take beefier creatures like deer, hogs, or coyotes at closer range. Both cartridges have merit, but .22 wmr is more versatile over-all...at least provided that the hunter can do their part with regard to bullet drop and shot placement.
