There's much satisfaction and challenge in groundhog hunting, and you are making some great shots! As a 51-yr-old guy who has slain many a woodchuck, I would suggest that if you know you have a confirmed kill, do not go check the animal until you are done for the day. Any human activity in the field with greatly hinder further groundhog movement for several hours. Collect all the carcasses when you're done.

Ah, reminds me of my youth, starlings, pigeons, groundhogs. Good shooting. Thing to remember, .17HMR is a rifle especially at longer ranges, that you always prepare for a follow up shot. And I agree, wait until the end of the day to retrieve. I always like my .17 Remington. Easily past 500 yard shots. My furthest shot is 450

It's not that they don't understand, it's more like they refuse to and maybe just for the sake of arguing and feeling 10ft tall about it. That all changes when they start destroying their stuff though, and instead of doing something more humane they try to poison the creature or capture and beat it to death with a shovel or other blunt object, very few will actually cough up the cost to have professional pest control take care of it.

@@jenrizar660 17 is a lot more expensive and it's louder but it's a lot deadlier and it doesn't ricochet, where 22 is notorious for bouncing off. It depends what you want. If you want to target shoot 22 is better, period. if you want to shoot animals past 50 yards the 17 is better, just be aware it drifts a lot in the wind even under 200 yards. Humanely killing a critter in the wind is pretty difficult. I sold my 17 because I live in a gusty windy place and it just got annoying to go out and even target shoot at 200. His 140 yard kill here is really impressive even in light wind. I shot a groundhog once with a 22 and I won't do it again, it took him a while to die even though I got him in the heart. But I'll probably never own a 17 again, I'd get something with less wind drift that would be less frustrating.

I have them in my backyard tunneling under my firewood pile and storage shed, doing a lot of damage. They come out to eat clover growing back there. I get them from my bedroom window at 40 yds with 17gr .17HMR, all head shots, sends them straight to paradise. Sometimes they flop over and twitch legs and tail, sometimes they just put their head down with no movement at all. I usually get 3 per summer. I have to keep checking out the window whenever I'm in the house, you never know when one will show up.Then I have to crack the window open reeeeal slow and quiet. I have a Savage bolt action with a bipod and a decent scope, nothing fancy. I keep it at the ready near the window with a full magazine. I have woods right behind me but only one time I tossed one over the fence. It stunk the place up for several days. After that I started taking them for a ride to a roadside ditch along a field elsewhere. There are birds and other scavengers that will get them, and I doubt there is a farmer around here that minds if I take a few out and toss them in a ditch. A couple years ago I busted one and just left him out there in the afternoon. A couple hours later I walked out the back door and a ground hog was standing in the exact spot where I wasted him. It spooked me for a second because I thought it came back to life! It saw me and ran off. Only then I realized it was a second one that came out to sniff the dead one. So I went back in the house to wait and keep checking. It took a couple more hours but the second one finally came back out and I busted him too. I had a chance for a 4th one that year but he saw me and booked. I took a pot shot at his ass as he was leaving but I'm pretty sure it missed. Pretty sure I got him the next year though.
