There's much satisfaction and challenge in groundhog hunting, and you are making some great shots! As a 51-yr-old guy who has slain many a woodchuck, I would suggest that if you know you have a confirmed kill, do not go check the animal until you are done for the day. Any human activity in the field with greatly hinder further groundhog movement for several hours. Collect all the carcasses when you're done.

Ah, reminds me of my youth, starlings, pigeons, groundhogs. Good shooting. Thing to remember, .17HMR is a rifle especially at longer ranges, that you always prepare for a follow up shot. And I agree, wait until the end of the day to retrieve. I always like my .17 Remington. Easily past 500 yard shots. My furthest shot is 450

If I may suggest something. Using the same material that you did for your backdrop, make a canopy to keep the sun off of your body and rifle. By the end of the day it can make a world of difference in eye strain and overall success. You are an excellent shot. Someone taught you well. Pass the knowledge on to your children some day.

We used to eat about 75 a year really good if you are camping. Groundhog, fish and for side dish dandelion greens, plantain and poke maybe some berries.Don't forget a skillet and some butter or oil.

It's not that they don't understand, it's more like they refuse to and maybe just for the sake of arguing and feeling 10ft tall about it. That all changes when they start destroying their stuff though, and instead of doing something more humane they try to poison the creature or capture and beat it to death with a shovel or other blunt object, very few will actually cough up the cost to have professional pest control take care of it.

17 HMR is such a great round. Where i grew up we had prairie dogs which are basically just smaller groundhogs and as long as the wind was down i could drop them at 250 to 300 yards easily. Add in some wind though and anything over 150 yards was tough.

@@jenrizar660 17 is a lot more expensive and it's louder but it's a lot deadlier and it doesn't ricochet, where 22 is notorious for bouncing off. It depends what you want. If you want to target shoot 22 is better, period. if you want to shoot animals past 50 yards the 17 is better, just be aware it drifts a lot in the wind even under 200 yards. Humanely killing a critter in the wind is pretty difficult. I sold my 17 because I live in a gusty windy place and it just got annoying to go out and even target shoot at 200. His 140 yard kill here is really impressive even in light wind. I shot a groundhog once with a 22 and I won't do it again, it took him a while to die even though I got him in the heart. But I'll probably never own a 17 again, I'd get something with less wind drift that would be less frustrating.

I have them in my backyard tunneling under my firewood pile and storage shed, doing a lot of damage. They come out to eat clover growing back there. I get them from my bedroom window at 40 yds with 17gr .17HMR, all head shots, sends them straight to paradise. Sometimes they flop over and twitch legs and tail, sometimes they just put their head down with no movement at all. I usually get 3 per summer. I have to keep checking out the window whenever I'm in the house, you never know when one will show up.Then I have to crack the window open reeeeal slow and quiet. I have a Savage bolt action with a bipod and a decent scope, nothing fancy. I keep it at the ready near the window with a full magazine. I have woods right behind me but only one time I tossed one over the fence. It stunk the place up for several days. After that I started taking them for a ride to a roadside ditch along a field elsewhere. There are birds and other scavengers that will get them, and I doubt there is a farmer around here that minds if I take a few out and toss them in a ditch. A couple years ago I busted one and just left him out there in the afternoon. A couple hours later I walked out the back door and a ground hog was standing in the exact spot where I wasted him. It spooked me for a second because I thought it came back to life! It saw me and ran off. Only then I realized it was a second one that came out to sniff the dead one. So I went back in the house to wait and keep checking. It took a couple more hours but the second one finally came back out and I busted him too. I had a chance for a 4th one that year but he saw me and booked. I took a pot shot at his ass as he was leaving but I'm pretty sure it missed. Pretty sure I got him the next year though.

Pretty much like eating a big squirrel. If you let the meat sit a few days, boil it, and then fry it, the meat was real tender and quite good with a few biscuits and some gravy 😂. Im not gonna be eating one anytime soon but just saying it can be done and also be quite good lol.

I was going to ask the ammo type but then i saw u taking multiple follow up shots as well and i realize its just the nature of the 17. Basically if u dont dome them u will have to shoot again or know its suffering. I use to use the 17 for any hog around the house like porch shots basically so the shot wasnt freaking the cows out. But i dont like them not checking out with the first shot so i use 556 now instead for all of them or my DB9mm. Its a fun gun to use for closer shots and dont usually need a follow up either.

For 250 and in if you want rimfire bang flop on groundhogs, the 17wsm is king on that. My furthest right now is 210, bang flop. It literally fell over backwards an inch behind it’s tracks where it was standing on impact. Killed a coyote bang flop at 180 with it too. I’d say for groundhog and coyote specific rifle, to 300 the 17 hornet center fire would be the ideal choice however.

Cool! Love the video! My only complaint is you going to pick up the body after every shot. Maybe keeping others from coming our as soon, but then I realized you're also making content ans not solely hunting...so I'll shut up😁 lol.

Those groundhogs are good to eat young man. They are a vegetarian animal and taste very much like beef. As a young boy growing up I ate many of them. Just thought I would share that info with you.

@@blockethoutdoors they have glands in their armpits and groin that look like whitish yellow peas .if you do not remove these when cleaning they taste like crap. there are videos on youtube showing removing these.also it helps to get as much siverskin off the meat as you can. i par boil them and then barbeque.

@@blockethoutdoors after dressing them out rinse the meat un cold water then let it soak I. Cold water fir about 2 hrs. Just letting the blood out of the meat. Then quarter the ground hog roll in flour and fry like chicken, important to remember to fry on low medium heat or it will get tough and chewy add salt and pepper to taste. Always cook wild game with low heat so it stays tender. If they are young hogs you can fry them, but if it's an adult. Then quarter 3 ground hogs put them I. Crock pot on medium heat add vegies salt pepper or what ever you like to season pot roast. Cook it till vegies are tender , meat will fall off the bone. Add some buttered sweet cornbread on the side and I think you'll enjoy it. You can also BBQ them as well just do it low and slow.

i think missing the 126 feet one was the wind , the shot went to the left of target , a mil for the wind would have done it like the earlier , anyways enjoying your videos, cheers.
