Personally, I think this is one of Blondie's underrated tracks. I've always loved this song. And, for the people who wish to joke/criticize Deborah with the comments of 'Souls and Sins'. Are any of you aware, that Deborah placed her career on hold, while she cared for her husband Chris, when he was sick?

Nothing more symbolizes the change over from Post-Punk New Wave to 80's music than this song, its album, and what it did to Blondie. Debbie Harry and the boys were pop music gods for a few years, this single and its album came out, Blondie toured with Duran Duran opening, and within a year Blondie was yesterday's news and Duran Duran was the next big thing.

A lot of people will disagree, but I actually think this song, and many others off of this album are among the very best songs by Blondie. On each CD of Blondie's, I generally have a few tracks on auto-skip. This is the only album where I don't do that. This particular song is also one of my favourite drinking/BBQ songs.
@josephkokomo1752
@josephkokomo1752 2 ай бұрын
I totally disagree. I am a HUGE Blondie fan(atic). The whole album, the Hunter, feels half-assed to the max. Don't get me wrong - I love it. But most of the songs feel incomplete or could have used better production/reworkings by Mike Chapman. For me, the song that's an absolute classic off the album is 'Dragonfly' (except it needed the vocals pumped up a bit, for more clarity). But songs like 'the Beast', 'Orchid Club' and 'War Child' feel like incredible ideas - but somehow they feel half-finished. Love 'Can I Find the Right Words' and 'English Boys, insofar as they feel complete. 'island of Lost Souls' needs to lose the brass instruments, imo. Anyway.... i know i'm not 'right' - it's just my opinions - and i appreciate you letting me express them. The main thing is it's good to meet another huge fan of Blondie. ('Autoamerican' is the classic album- best pop album of all time, of ANY band).

Great song... but a clumsy video thanks to random assorted imagery and horrible Star Wars masks. The Hunter album was pretty darn good despite the bad reviews, but I always thought they got short changed when they didn't get the nod for their James Bond theme song entry "For Your Eyes Only" which was BRILLIANT... and way better than the slow broody Sheen Easton rendition.

In spite of the weird video, this is a great song, better than Tide Is High, I think. The funny thing is that Blondie was on its way out by 1982, and still they knew exactly what they were doing. (Music video producers didn't quite know what they were doing in 1982.) It's perfectly fitting with Blondie's retro tendencies, except this goes back to the 1940s, a little far back for us young'uns in 1982. My mother thought it was a hit from the 40s, and I had to convince her it wasn't :)

Blondie is one of my favorites 💖 I like most of their songs. This song "ISLAND OF LOST SOULS" is a good song. The music is nice, but the lyrics are sad such as "Where did he go, I am tired of waiting for him....... Where can he be....... he's not with me........he runs away from me........etc. !!!". If the lyrics are about true and beautiful love, I am sure this song will be very popular like "THE TIDE IS HIGH". It's my opinion, if anybody agree with me, give me "A Like" 😀

It was a rough time to be a Blondie fan then. I also barely noticed when Debs put out Rockbird in 1986: due to my excuse being I was finishing high school, distracted, and intent on escaping the horrid place (and also smitten with newer bands like R.E.M. and others). I recall seeing the video for French Kissin' In the USA and just not being knocked out by it at all. (I did have the vinyl of KooKoo which I kind of liked, a few years earlier) Then flash forward to the later 80s to early 1990s, and I managed to see Debs solo twice, once at Malibu Club in L.I. and also the same time in NYC at the Marquee Club, which didn't last too long. I paid a lot more attention to Def, Dumb and Blond, of course, which found her on much surer footing all around.

I'm not sure, but I think their relationship with their label was not in the greatest shape by then as well, on top of all their other problems. The album was a good one, but nothing to really touch Parallel Lines or Eat to the Beat in terms of consistency. According to Wiki, "in the liner notes to the 2001 reissue of The Hunter, producer Mike Chapman stated "I knew that we were in a different and far less accessible artistic space. And that worried me. I could tell that things were different now, and I knew that this would be the last Blondie album." " So clearly Mike could sense that things were breaking apart. The tour that followed was apparently not a raging success, either. But the album has some fine material on it, nonetheless.

The UK loved Blondie more than any other nation. She had way more success here (UK) Than anywhere.

I remember thinking at the time that reggae had been played out so Blondie tried calypso. Islands, brass instruments, sort of reggae-ish, if you squint with your ears. I think it was successful, if not sustained or mimicked by others. I do vaguely remember a calypso fad for a little while back then that then faded, which I thought would happen to rap too. Seems that fad might keep going, but calypso is better. At least it’s real music.

@discomadame Junkies? On Tresco, the Isles of Scilly where they filmed this? Unless they flew them over from Penzance, that seems a bit unlikely! I've been to the Isles of Scilly for 20 years and I don't think I've ever seen a homeless person let alone junkies!

Not their best song, but I love that Blondie was more than willing to experiment with different styles of music. This has a "The Tide is High" vibe to it. At least they were having fun!

For the record, Debbie always did her own hair. But this song crosses over from pop to Vegas kitsch. 78-79 material took balls and talent... anyone can do this.

They are still an incredible live act. I saw Blondie at the 2018 New York State Fair and a 70+ Debbie Harry put on a great 90-minute set. She was so engaged with the audience! Unforgettable

They made a movie from the song title during the early 30's, then a remake was done in the 70's called "The Island of Dr. Moreau".

Too bad this was the last classic Blondie song. They should have gone on much longer than they did.
@guyinsf
@guyinsf 2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't possible for them to go much longer unfortunately. By 1982 there was a lot of internal fighting and animosity between the members, a lot of drug use, they were overworked and overtouring since 1977 and Chris was developing a very mysterious life-threatening auto-immune disease which many thought was AIDS. Just a lot of odds stacking up against the band by 1982. The band didn't even want to record the album the Hunter but it was an contractual obligation to the record label, which made millions out of the band but the band got practically nothing during their peak years.

The album this song comes from "The Hunter" is loosely based on the theme of "searching , hunting or pursuing one's own Mt. Everest." I like this song and video. Cheers!
