It is a skirmish game with campaign elements based on a mix of fantasy and sports. Imagine orcs and dwarves playing American football. There are also a couple of quite good games out on steem that are faithful recreations of the bordgame.

It's one of the specialist games GW released. They made a few games off the sideline, some more silly than others. And Blood Bowl is towards the silly side, so far that it takes place in an alternate timeline where all the war and carnage in the Old World has been replaced with "Murican football".
