So, it *is* technically a spin-off. It was one of the kickstarter goals for the original game, but development took a lot less time than the base game, so it got released early as a buzz generator. Also, if you did dig this one, they've already released its sequel, and they also released two "classic modes" in the base game itself that also play this way but with the core game's graphics.

Despite not playing the actual NES Castlevania games I did have a good time with this, but I also played several OTHER games in that era itself so some of its homage definitely still worked for me. But mostly the music, especially the final bosses, those have stuck with me.

I played through the game a couple of years ago, getting all of the possible endings, and I loved it. It’s exactly what you said: a Castlevania III-style affair, and it has a ton of options to tailor the difficulty. I need to play the sequel at some point or another.
