I have been a long time fan of the hunting public and the hunting beast. Recently I found your channel when you did videos with the hunting public guys. I have killed a bunch of deer with various broadheads through the years, but watching your channel I'm embarrassed with how un-sharp my broadheads are. Also, I totally revamped my hunting set up with magnus broadheads and high FOC arrows. BTW keep the anatomy and physiology talk up, I'm a MD and I appreciate the perspective.

I've watched a bunch of your videos and many of them twice. I took a rifle out the last two seasons with no luck but there are many places in Northern California where I can hunt with a bow and not a gun. I'm taking my bow out this year (previously only for target shooting). Got the test kit and found that 27" 250 spine Vulcan arrows with 200gr points and 100gr inserts make bullet holes in paper at 7 yards with no fletchings, even with the heavier lighted nocks. Ordered a dozen Vulcan, 6 Valkyrie Bloodeagle broadheads and 6 Cutthroat broadheads. Really excited for this year. Thanks for the hard work, research, and most of all, sharing your knowledge and experience in an easy to understand format.

The cut away of the shoulder you show towards the end of the video is a great example of what you have to penetrate to get to the vitals and also, all the potential shifting layers that can reduce blood exiting the animal's body. Glad you are posting great information and have not succumbed to the advertising glitz plaguing other channels. I have not watched THE OUTDOOR CHANNEL in YEARS due to 5 minutes of hunting, and 25 minutes of advertising. Keep rockin it.

Great video! I discovered this channel two days ago and I've already watched six or eight of them. Awesome videos!! I have been using a bow for a long time and have always had arguments with paper shooters. They want fast, flat shooting arrows so they can score higher, not so they can kill game. None of them can explain to me why their 80# bows shooting 350 grain arrows can't usually penetrate even to the fletching while a traditional archer shooting a 50# bow gets complete pass throughs even on a Moose. It's because even though they are slow arrows (by today's standards) they are shooting 500 or 600+ grain arrows. I read some of Dr Ashbey's (spelling?) stuff on the Alaska Bowhunting website. It's great stuff.and I'm very happy you are promoting his ideas.

There are so many broadhead choices out there for every hunter to pick his or her favorite. I personally used to use the flappers but now on fixed blades. I shoot the Montec because of the one piece design. No moving parts or things to change or come loose. I’ve read where some people on the “inter-web” have good blood trails withe the Montec and some say they aren’t that good of a blood trail. But did find the deer. Same stories with other broadheads. You just told the reason and glad you did. Thanks for being honest and real. Enjoy your videos. Would love to meet u in person sometime. Keep doing what u do and being true to all bow hunters and not letting us get caught up in the hype of all the marketing. Bow hunting should be fun. Not confusing and stressful. Thanks.

I’ve had excellent results with 4 blade Muzzy Phantoms. Since they no longer make them I’m using the 4 blade Palmer Extreme Cut 160 grain! Both are excellent cut on contact broad heads! Great video!

I hit an Elk at 32 yards with a Rage broadhead with a hide cutting tip just above the elbow and a very heavy 2317 arrow at 70 pounds. I assumed the arrow passed through the animal. The Elk fell over and kicked on the ground for about 10 seconds, got back up and ran away. I found no blood but I saw him run across the park for 200 yards. No arrow... no blood... nothing. I then went back to where the Elk fell at the shot and found the arrow laying on the ground. The Rage was intact... I could see that it only went in about 1/2 inch and then bounced back. I suspect I hit a rib dead on. I may have knocked the wind out of the animal! I may have broken the rib but it never went into the chest. I do prefer a chisel tip and I only use Muzzy now. Normally I get a pass thru using fixed blade and chisel tips.

I really wish someone would of had all this straight to the point info back about 10years ago when I started bow hunting. I have learned more from your channel in the last 6 months then I have known over the last 10 years and I thank you for that. I have turned a few of my hunting buddies onto your channel as well and they to have never even thought about hardly any of the things you preach about when it comes to putting down game animals. we all were all about the fast light weight flipper flappers but now after your videos have all been reconsidering our setups for next season. back years ago I got stuck on the whole mechanical rage thing and ran into nothing but problems. 2 doe lost to reasonable shots that just didn't get through the ribs. I then switched to the buzzcuts and have nothing at all bad to say about them but my arrow set up was all wrong. 340ish gr arrow 100gr buzzcut and like 10%foc if I was lucky. hit a whitetail buck high and stuck the arrow in the far shoulder. the arrow broke off right at the FOC balance point and I lost that deer as well. 2 years later I took buck with still not so great of arrow set up and a G5T3. hit him back and high still in the rib cage. got both lungs and hit no bone. arrow barely made it through. then I went to the dark side and bought a crossbow. been using it for a few years only bc I felt more effective with it but now your videos have shed new light and gave me the confidence to dust off my old bow and dial her in. I have been playing with a ton of arrow combos now just letting the bow tell me what it likes and come to find out so far it is liking some 600gr arrows with 26.7%FOC and even though slow at 212fps I think it should be just the ticket for some sub 30 yard thickets that I have been focusing on this past season. keep up the great videos.

@@RanchFairy I checked last night for the arrow or at least a picture of that broken arrow but had no luck. but I'm sure you can imagine a light arrow set up for target hitting solid bone and just shattering. now I just watched your video again of animals jumping the string and thought of an idea. now it may sound crazy and will result for sure in a lost opportunity but for science sake. have you ever thought about setting up a target 20 or 30 yards in the complete opposite direction of your hogs and feeder? get the camera on the hogs and shoot the target and see if they are indeed jumping on the shot or bc of the arrow flying towards them or the combination of both. just a thought that came to mind when I had a buddy telling me a story where he went to take a shot at a doe and somehow hit a branch right in front of him about 5 feet away. arrow went straight into the ground and the doe just stood there at 25yards and gave him a second shot which he made count.

Great explanation Troy. I've noticed the same thing - shooting them in the "golden triangle" usually means less blood on the ground, but I've never lost a deer because of it, and it's a very lethal place to hit.

I like these nuggets of wisdom and it has clarified for me, too. And I was erroneously looking to the back of shoulder. But your explanation here and the other one on the "Vital V" make all the sense in the world. If a person can concentrate on being no more than 1 MOA wide at out to 300 yards (1 MOA at 300 yards is 3.14 inches,) you will always get the deer. Closer for archery, of course. Or muzzleloaders. Any deer can run because the ruined heart and lungs is not what is actually stopping them, the loss of oxygenated blood to the brain is what does it. So, they can survive for some seconds and run 60 to 100 yards, then drop. My boss shot an Aoudad Sheep that ran about 30 yards with a hole in the heart from a .300 Win Mag.

RF, excellent explanation of what happens with animals and what not when they are shot. I recently switched to Iron Wills s125 broadheads from Rage Trypans (100 grains) and slayed two deert this week. I done noticed there was far less blood trails with the fixed broadhead but I really didn't need them. The solid broadheads with more FOC and umph just knocked them down in a way 100 grain expandables haven't.

I hit an elk 2 years ago that barely bled at all. I did hit him a bit back and he was quartering to, it was a pass through. He was double lunged and hit in the front of the liver. We found maybe 15 drops of blood and (1) 3 inch puddle where he bedded for a bit before i screwed up and bumped him after an hour of waiting. Finally, we came back 4 hours later, just to be sure... When we finally found him he had a big fat sack (2 inches at least) that plugged the exit wound. i dont know if the fletchings dragged it out but it was a wierd scenario. Shame on me, i shot him with a grim reaper mechanical. I have since gone to the Kudu point single bevel, thanks to you for getting my mind working in a different direction. I will never shoot mechanical again. That 4 hours of waiting was terrible.

I shot 2 deer with a 55 lb compound bow at 40 yards with 450gr for arrow weight and i didn't make the best shot on the first deer but my arrow was completely covered in blood but not very much blood for the blood trail and this bothered me until i watched this video and i think you have helped me become a better bow hunter.

I loved shooting TechnoHunt, taught me a lot about shooting for the heart. I shot in a league for a few years till the bow shop went out of business. Heart shots matter even in a Techno League. The heart is where all the points are. I recommend anyone that has a chance to practice at a Techno Hunt to do so. You will quickly realize what this man is telling you about shot placement is very true.

Double lunged a doe with the old compound and she barely bleed enough to find her. Double lunged another doe with the crossbow with Blackout mechanicals and she didn't bleed til she fell. There was a small puddle of blood under her the size of my hand. It flooded her lungs and didn't come out to the exterior. The 2 holes were the same cut as the broadhead shape. Will never use those Blackouts again. Luckily I watched both run off and listened intently enough to hear them crash 100 yards away and knew what area to look in

My first kill this season was a Texas heart shot from the ground. Arrow entered and exited at same hight. Zero blood trail, but when she fell twenty feet later the blood poured out. The blood will fill the chest cavity, bleeding internal is just as deadly as it pumping out.

I like your idea of using heavy arrows, but I'm having trouble finding components to build anything over 500 grains, without ordering out of country (I'm in Canada). My hunting arrows are currently 507 grains... I'm shooting a 72lb bow, 29.5" draw, so I selected a 300 shaft, added a 45 grain insert, and to top it off, I'm using 150 grain Magnus Stinger broadheads. I'm still getting around 280 fps, which seems respectable to me. I'll be using this setup for moose at the end of the month.

I've actually had that same thought! They seem like great heads. He doesnt like three blades for structural reasons when it comes to breaking bone, doesnt mean they aren't a viable option though. I might experiment with them a bit.

I’m gonna try it RF whitetail hunter lost a personal best buck a few weeks ago shooting about 390 grains hit him behind the shoulder quartering away at 18 yards got about 5 inches of penetration tracked him 4 miles until he quit bleeding (unfortunate situation and never what any hunter wants) so I decided to buy some carbon express piledrivers some and some 100 grain inserts should put me at about 555 grain arrow and 16% foc

in the old days, there was a device called String Tracker. REcurves didn't have enough ummph, so the string tracker spool of string that flys out like fishing line; then u just rack the string. I have it; I may end up using it if I go out this year. REcurve ppl have to max their chances.

Things moving inside the animal is why the blood trail is every couple of feet on the ground. You should check out a podcast On Gritty he did with Oz Cut broadheads. They are coming out with a three blade single bevel.

Mike Bowerman Three blade Sb has been around for years. There is some question to its abilities. Three blades do not have an equal and opposite pressure reduction 180 degrees. It will be interesting. Hopefully the gritty guys will Test it. Be cool to see the results.

I switched to a compound bow two years ago. I have not shot one in twenty five years. I have been a 190 grain broadhead and hardwood shaft shooter for many years. I have experimented with all kinds of Nick Nacks on targets. Live animals deserve respect. Keep telling this story....it works. Wood arrows are a little more complicated than modern shafts to adjust. I am shooting a baby piss 550 grain arrow right now, but I have to put a round bale behind my block target to stop the point. That is at 35 and 40 yards not 10. I have some better arrows on the way. I hope your haters don't break you down to a little whiney hussy! I am just going to have to shoot my baby piss arrows another year it appears.

Shot two archery deer this year... First was double lung with a full blade through the heart. He went 125 yards and only bled the last 20. Second was double lung 2inches high and back from the heart. Two or three drops in 100yds dead... Both deer had 2gallon blood clots in chest when dressed...

We are going to start exploring blade edge integrity, initial data shows a moderate (moderate) correlation between an adult arrow with a shaving sharp, stropped, edge and blood trails. I believe it is because the blade survives impact extremely sharp compared to the thin, Chinese. Lowest bidder stainless. More to come

good vid but one thing you didn't hit on was shot placement and deflection. I've killed a lot of hogs and deer with broadhead entry at the center line between the top of the back and the bottom of the belly and what a perfect heart placement would be. Only to have the broadhead deflect up and have a exit it 2"-5" higher than the entry. With the result being an exit that is so high not much blood exits because as you pointed out the layers of tissue that can in effect close a hole up. this holds especially true with wide cut mechanicals like shwacker.

Tim brown Working on that!! Thanks for the input. Of note - the arrows aren’t deflecting as much as I once believed - the animals are rolling when they jump the string. Going to get more video on this. See my “why do animals jump the string” video and watch the animals, they roll away as much as drop!

I’m replying to the masses - so don’t take this on the chin. Perfect bare shaft flight assumed That takes time! Doesn’t matter. You’re gonna see gel tests and other crap when you think I’m an idiot. Not if. Animals are NOT a consistent medium. Gel Broadhead targets Etc They are consistent and DESIGNED to stop things Guess what??? Skinny things do better in thick consistent mediums designed to stop things. There is no correlation. Animals are not designed to stop things. Order of operation: Hair, skin, fat meat, random bones then AIR - for all practical purposes. Then again random bone, meat skin hair. If the arrow is flying sideways or inaccurately with broadheads - you’re chasing a solution to a problem created…… By not putting in the work. So - I shoot mid diameter - .204 Not fat - not skinny. Normal boring inserts.

Do you use footers on your arrows. I a 2.5 inch footer 2117 on a 300 spine 7.6mm carbon arrow with 250 2 blade broadheads. I've had great luck with this setup. Why do you use heaver inserts vs a footer???

bearded archery Because it’s much easier to move pieces around. My philosophy is to get a perfect flying arrow / FOC / etc with no regard for a fixed total arrow weight. Plus - I Test all manner of broadheads so if I find a 580 grainer running 325 grains up front, I can literally shoot 300 grain broadheads or add inserts and shoot 125 grainers. Golf bag baby!!!!

I find it interesting how in South Africa they all know where the vital triangle is. This is something they harp on when us Mercans show up. The vitals do set forward a bit on African game but the vital triangle applies to nearly all large game. I have pictures of giant holes through hearts using that shot placement. The proof is in the pudding folks.
