Visited Singa in 2019, was blown away with its beauty its cleanness, gardens, peoples, architecture, food and the pride & will to look outside the box in creating new tech and design for the future. Its hot if you visit the equator on during the hottest months of the year this is to be expected. Humidity is the real mother here. We'd feel a lot less smothered and bothered if it's a tad lower. Summer days in Europe feels more bearable even at higher temperatures. The moment you step into shade you feel the difference in temperature. In Singapore, moist is a feeling you get every day. Heck, sometimes as soon as you step out of the showers lol. But yes, I'm sure we appreciate the country using science to cool it a little esp now when we can't escape the heat with a holiday to cooler places. -.-

Living in equator climate is suffering. It can be so hot and humid. People who lives in cold weather didn't know how lucky they are. You can wear a jacket or whatever outside to prevent feeling cold, but you can't do anything with hot weather accept to stay inside a building or car with air conditioner. Crossing border from Malaysia to Singapore. One thing that surprised me is that Singapore despite its land size, I can see so many greens islandwide, and I feel the breeze while walking on the roads from HDB to bus stop. I never feel any breeze while walking in Kuala Lumpur, and KL city hall designed the sidewalk to be occupied by selfish businesses, trying to discourage pedestrians to drive instead.

To be fair, I see that KL is pretty far away from the ocean compared to the middle of SG. Also when I look at maps, there's hardly reservoirs or rivers in KL. That could contribute to the heat or lack of breeze? City design of buildings can affect wind.

I am a Singaporean retired in Malaysia. Living near a golf course and forested areas with a pond in my courtyard and solar panel roof do really cool down my house. When it shines I benefit from solar production and when it rains I benefit from rain harvesting. Cheers.

I view what is happening in Singapore with great interest. Frankly, I think that what Singapore is trying to do using science and technology has to be exported and duplicated throughout the world as not much can be done within one tiny country. The problem is too big to be solved by increasing vegetation cover, cooling the air and clever use of aerodynamic design. Perhaps a bit of improvement can be achieved but it’s simply unsustainable. The whole world has to be doing the same thing. I hail Singapore’s effort and really want to see it exported everywhere.

I agree, I think the benefit of Singapore being a small country is that the government has alot more say and can act significantly more decisively on such matters. Say you wanted to do the same in a country like the US for example, the proposal would probably have to go through multiple rounds of approval before it even makes its way to the city hall office. By that time the issue would've probably gotten too bad to resolve

I wouldn't say the whole world, problem is most of the people who live in these climates live in low-income countries. The north and south tend not to have these problems. The issue in Mainland Europe and N.America is that the heat only lasts so long so making a whole system just for a few weeks where it gets this hot isn't worth it. The weather is very inconsistent and so I don't think anything like that will make it here.

"Pumping cold water into the surrounding office towers in the summer" is not possible in Singapore. In Singapore, everyday is summer and there are just too many office towers and buildings around and Water is super precious. Hence, Singapore is looking for a more sustainable way of cooling its environment especially since it is summer everyday for them and pumping water is not possible because Singapore treats water as a very precious resource to only be used for survival as much as possible. Interesting to see that the pumping of cold water works well in Toronto but it may not be feasible in Singapore.

As a physicist, imho what they need is something like SkyCool systems solution, or more of that district cooling. All those AC units need to dump the heat either radiatively into the sky, or into water through district cooling, but not in the air right outside the buildings where it'll quickly find its way back in. Also, try to eliminate surfaces that are black in the visible spectrum. Ideally, surfaces should be as dark as possible in the far IR spectrum (so they radiate heat back to the sky as infrared) and as white as possible in the visible spectrum (so that they absorb as little sunlight as possible). Any dark building surfaces should be painted.

Amazing city! well done Singapore!💪 Where I live, in Barcelona, Spain, we also try to increase the green areas, specially vertical gardens and using rooftops to build communal areas. Also what we call superblocks, blocks of apartments, where the speed of the road is reduced and there's also more greenery around, we have a project for that in 5 years time. We hope the governments invest more in making our cities and villages more comfortable👍

Liquid cooling or centralized cooling system is really common in every larger building such as shopping mall worldwide. They just did it in much larger scale.

Very cool city!! Trees in a city are really important not only for environment, but also for mental health of the residents. The idea to make a whole-city model is amazing. @@Numberonesorabjifan haha same, while my whole family uses air con, I choose to use a fan whenever I'm at home. Sure it can get hot sometimes but I've been doing it for life and I got used to it, also partially that the air is so dry and stale that I hate it. In fact, I sometimes find that 28°C on my air con pretty cold.

@@peachymango_ I would have used ac but I really don't like the dryness it creates. But once I went to visit someone and they had their ac on, fans on full speed and a massive humidifier and i didn't want to leave. But I don't have a humidifier so a fan shall do.

Hong Kong on the other hand, had significantly superior infrastructure when compared to Singapore from the 50s to 70s. Singapore’s colonial history has very little to what the country has become today.

Every time Singapore does something for the country, it just feels wonderful. Even though in summer Singapore did felt bit hot, it's way better than other countries. and I loved the transportation there! India is very far behind of taking care of the country in terms of nature. And it's only getting worse and worse! I wish to see India getting somewhere like this by 2050, or at least in my lifetime.

Lived in singapore for 6 years and graduated from high school there. By far my favorite place in the world. It has its own problems-especially with racism and other social issues-but city planning is beautiful. I can tell that LKY really was gunning for the "city in a garden" aesthetic with the architecture. Especially around the CBD areas like harbourfront. Despite not being true blue Singaporean, I'm so happy to be be even mildly associated to such an amazing country.

I live in a forest in a thick canopy. It is cool usually even in summer! It does get hot but its nothing compared to NYC or Chicago or Tampa or New Orleans in the summer, all places I've lived and all these places cut down too many trees, and the concrete just cooks you. Trees are the way to go!

Singapore is doing a great job. I think one more point to note is what kind of trees contribute more to cooling. As some trees can produce 24hrs oxygen while others can't. Maybe it is also a point worth noting.
