When it comes to technology, Shenzhen may well be the most fascinating city in the world. It makes the majority of our electronics. It clones the best technology Silicon Valley has to offer with ease. And, these days, Shenzhen buzzes with new ideas and an unrivaled energy that ensure it will play a major role in shaping our collective futures.
In this episode of Hello World, journalist Ashlee Vance heads to the spectacle that is Shenzhen to experience it firsthand. The results are equal parts inspiring and disconcerting as tech-fueled entrepreneurs try to navigate an authoritarian regime.

Ello ello. We've taken the three-part series on Shenzhen and turned it into one, longer glorious episode of Hello World. It has a lot of new - dare I say - spectacular footage and some new thoughts about the city and where it's heading. Hope you guys dig in and enjoy!

One of my friends who has worked both in Shenzhen and the Bay Area told me that she was frustrated by how slow things are made in the US. In the US, if she wants to have a custom mechanical part made to perform an experiment, she needs to submit an order to the manufacturer and wait for at least a week. In China, it can be done in matter of minutes, and she can walk over to pick up the order within an hour.

Indeed, Shenzhen grew from almost zero population to close to 14 million in 30 years, almost doubling the population of Hong Kong (7.4 million). This is equivalent to growing almost 2 New York City's (8.4 million) in that period of time. In contrast to Silicon Valley where population growth is intentionally limited to preserve the "Valley" to 4.3 million. That level of population growth has never been seen in human history.

I have lived in China for about 2 years. From what I have seen in China so far, it is really different here compared to what I have seen and heard in the media before coming to China. The Chinese people are hard-working and obsessed with work, yet they value health and rest. It is hard to believe they love Americans to a fault.... It is quite funny. I don't think many Americans know this, though. Mind you, Chinese Police don't carry guns. Lolz.... people live very simple lives and are very happy here. They love to "enjoy, relax and flex" after a hard day's work.

1. Tell that to the people being arrested for speaking out against the government 2. China has very very little exceptionalism compared to America 3. What's also scary is the fact that the Chinese government is holding millions of ethnic minorities in concentration camps(Even the UN has evidence), harvesting organs from political prisoners, detaining and kidnapping those who dare speak out against the government, watching all 24/7 + implementing a social credit system, and censoring and propagating its people from the outside world...

To me, the speed of China’s economic/technological development is the biggest deal here. When people are complaining about issues like intellectual properties with China, as a matter of fact they are not complaining about the present as they believe, rather they are complaining about the past. China has an impressively long and uninterrupted history, but today a significant social/cultural/economic difference still can be made over just a year or two in that huge country. One thing to clarify, I do NOT think China's GOV is rating its people through Wechat or Alipay. Actually the two are rating its users by their own "Customer Portrait System", For example, Alipay would rate you based on if you can pay your monthly bill timely, how much you pay online or so. They classify users into different levels like silver, golden and diamond, providing customized services or giving customized information, notification and suggestions. Wechat is doing basically the same thing.

Yes, the city grows in an amazing speed and its become even more impressive than ever, but life in there is very much a one-dimensional. I cannot expect many of these successful young expats will still be living in this city when they get into the 30-40s and starting to have families. I just hope this city and the Chinese society as a whole would gradually mature in the next few decades and remain a peaceful force in driving the world in advances and progressions.

You may have learned it because you want to advance your own education and career? Hopefully, you don't think that the youth of America and Europe are going to just sit around and do nothing while Blade Runner-scape China leads the way in everything, including valuable resources? What most people don't know that the West is very familiar with is that all that glitters isn't gold. You may be familiar with the saying, but do you really know what it means? Another is, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. For China to be boasting about being the next this or that, unmatched, unparalleled, is absurd. If it happens without collapse then great. China is on a mission to lead the world, is that it? There is a lot of responsibility in that. Business has to increase at a certain pace, or? Do you not understand how any of this works? My dad came to this city in the 1990s. With nothing but his masters degree in medicine, like literally pocket change. He saw an opportunity in the growing population, he founded a medical equipment market. Selling PCR (replicating DNA for testing) to hospitals. By the 2000s when I was born. My dad bought an apartment with cash. I grew up on a 4th floor of an luxury apartment neighbourhood(Xi Jinping’s mom or sister lives across the street in a mansion). I remember seeing the entire Shenzhen skyline building kept growing as a child. I once could see only 6-7 big buildings. Now I couldn’t even see 100 meters across the street. This year I am leaving my family in Toronto to go to California to study. I am afraid of leaving my family behind, living alone and all other things. But I chose to embrace it, hoping to find the opportunities that Shenzhen gave my parents.

So I have seen quite a lot of videos about China on KZbin. It seems for some people, that positive portraying of China is immoral, or evil. Besides Chinese government, there are 14 billion of Chinese, how come we are all bad. As ordinary Chinese, we don't really interest in politics, but able to have a better life that shield from war, hunger and crime. From what I see in the video, just a bunch of ambitious young talent working hard to achieve something great. And some labeled them as threat. I doubt these young talents will be labeled as threat if they are from western countries. I am tired of being accused of brainwashed constantly. I wonder if people from other countries have been brainwashed somehow in other perspectives. I can't agree with every policies that Chinese government made, but I sincerely grateful for the fact that I have more opportunities than my parents' generation and I never suffer from hunger as my parents did.

Western propaganda. That's it. They are more focused on portraying china in a bad way than solving west issues. Have you take a look at videos of homeless people in the US? There are even small shanty towns, growing in size like in latin america. They have to be more focused on solving that issues before talking about China and its progress. Is just a envious approach to criticize China in that way.

I was born in a rural area close to Wuhan, another big city in China. When you go to Wuhan, you can still see lots of skyscrapers and fancy buildings, just like Shenzheng. But my hometown is a small city. Most of young people went to the city like Shenzheng. The whole city is like an old man waiting for his death. Buildings are broken and turned to black color due to pollution. There are seldom any activities and people are not interested at all. In the village my grandpa used to live, there were 40 or 50 families 20 years ago. Now, last time I went there, only 3 old man and few kids are living there. How many cities are there in China like Shenzheng and Wuhan? How many cities in China like my hometown? Ok, Shenzheng, Wuhan, Beijing or Shanghai are "real" China. Other cities are not. I don't know which country they belong to.
@wangyanzhao8475

What about those young people going to big cities like Shenzheng? They build the city and they create wealth for the city. In the end, they can't live in Shenzheng when they retire. Their children even cannot go to schools for education because they are not ''real" Chinese. Now comes the questions again. How many "real" Chinese are there in China? 50 %? 20 %? 10%? or less?

@Citizen Four Without understanding, there is no right to speak. Remember that China is a country with a population of more than one billion. If, as rumors have been told, this country is full of turmoil. China develops itself when it is poor, helps the weak when it is rich and powerful, has no history of aggression and no malicious war. What has the world brought to Africa? What has China brought to Africa? Perhaps a very small number of people have been treated unfairly, but you can tell me which country has not experienced such a situation. So far, I think the Communist Party is the best in the world.

I've been through Shenzhen several times as it's the land border crossing to Hong Kong. I always smile at the western media hype about how the Chinese economy is going to collapse any day now, but I do have reservations about the speed of progress. When you take away people and replace them with robots, they become simply consumers and not working particiapants. That's going to be a big problem down the line.
