Look at the geniuses on here who STILL think we don’t pay the tariff. We’re cooked.
@valetudo15693 сағат бұрын
Michael Pettis has written books about this. He said the reason the trade deficits (like the US) go down when tariffs are used isn't so much because people buy less things from other countries - its because real incomes go down and so people have less money to buy things in general...thus indirectly resulting in less imports, but for the wrong reasons

The FOIA dataset contains individual records regarding each person encountered by officials at US ports of entry from whom fentanyl was seized. Figure 1 shows the citizenship of individuals arrested with fentanyl from fiscal year (FY) 2019 to 2024, as of June. Overall, the dataset reveals that out of 9,473 individuals associated with a fentanyl seizure, 7,598 were US citizens (80.2 percent).

It’s the same talking point that tariffs will increase inflation. These same companies didn’t divest from China since 2018. They should have seen the warning. There will always be short-term pain with inflation for long-term gain with companies near or re-shoring their manufacturing bases. Then the prices will drop again. Most of the products from China are low end technology that can be easily replicated in other developing countries. The US must realize that depending on a Communist country like China had a terrible outcome like during COVID. Their ideology is completely different from us with a plan to subvert and replace the US as a super power. As of now, they are still economically and militarily weaker than the US. However with the rate of them stealing our technology, favorable trading status, and the the Democrat hard leaning towards socialism/borderline Communism, it won’t be long that they will catch up and surpass us. Just remember, the US has a trade deficit with nearly every country and over $500 billion just with China. What do we have to lose? This is why no country dares to retaliate. They won’t bite the hand that feeds them.

Trump is living in the 1950s when America had a monopoly on global trade. Given the strong dollar and the high wages, no manufacturing will shift to the USA. Even if it does, there will be no workers. But I believe this is a plan to encourage more automation in the country. Companies faced with high wages, will be more incentivized to invest in automation as it will become cheaper in the long run. So in the end, the corporations will benefit, and the average American will get to sit at home with a Universal basic income.

Guess what? American companies are paying for the tarifs NOT Mexican or Canadian companies. i.e. An American company imports $100 from a country with 25% tarifs, that American company needs to pay the American Government 25% import duties or $25. American company passes the tariff to the consumers. The consumers are worth off!! That is how tariffs work, are you happy now?
