I ran into this exact problem when I was building a PC a while back. The case I got didn't have super great airflow, and the heat from the GTX 980 ti I had at the time was actually making my processor overheat like crazy. Sold the 980 ti and replaced it with that exact EVGA GTX 1070 FE with the blower, and now the system's thermals are perfect. That one change dropped my CPU temps by like 20 degrees C

My experience is that the blower style cooler has lower temperatures when gaming for a few hours. custom coolers leave the hot air in your case so eventually the card is just gonna suck in air that is already 60c, so i dont get why people like custom coolers that much...

This channel continues to be one of the best damn channels I've ever seen for this. Your explinations are simple, to the point, your voice is easy to understand, and the format and content continues to be of use to me even as I am geting ready to switch back to console. I still need a PC to play maybe one or two MMO's and this channel continues to give very good deals for people like me. The next computer I get will likely be one of the ASUS products previously featured on this show. Keep up the good work.

You should get an award for the crystal clear explanations on this type of thing. I have also heard the blower style cooler is recommended for multi gpu configurations (crossfire or sli). I think multi gpu is impractical but for those who choose this there is a lot more heat so perhaps it should be expelled out the back of the case rather than within.

Finally someone who gave definitive answer to the question instead of long beating around the bush bs that other channels don't explain the answer well enough for viewers to confirm their suspicions. You are right, each cooler type is best applicable to different computer cases. blower for less air vented cooling cases and multi fan coolers for well vented and high air pressure cases. And you didn't pad out the video to be longer than 10 minutes to get more ad revenue, good on you being an honest person unlike so many channels padding video playtime.

You explained this the best issue with coolers the best . I've been breaking my neck watching video after video on these big tech channels about cooling solutions and this is the first one thats hit on every point of consideration in a clear manner . Smh . What took me about 5 videos and 3 articles to learn, I picked up in your video alone . I'm a noob at this I needed the kind of concise explanation you gave when it comes to gpu cooling vs cpu cooling, the amount of fans in a case, intake and exhaust . I was freaking confused man . You helped a lot .

Me: Looking for a great GPU cooler TD: The blower might not be the best choice because it has a tendency to be hotter and run slower Me: Uh, okay guess I'm not buying a blower GPU and I guess I'll buy an open-air GPU TD: So you're probably like 'then why don't you just get the open-air GPU?' Me: Yeah tbh now I am TD: But wait, if you have no proper cooling in your pc like multiple case fans, an open-air gpu can overheat your pc Me: *has no case fans*..... blower fan it is! :D Thanks TD!

Another case for blower-style coolers are Mini-ITX cases where you might not have cubic space to even place case fans. Blowers will take air from anywhere it can from the limited cubic space and expel it out the back.

Quick Answer: If your case has fans get the regular fans on the GPU. If your case doesn't have fans you need the blower type that is the reference card which will send the air outside the case from the slot in the back of the card.

I have a define r5 case and I went with a reference style GPU because I went for balanced airflow. I have my psu; 1 fan on the bottom going in; 2 in the front going in 1 in the back going in; and finally a corsair watercooler loop pointing out the top of the case. Theory going I would rather push out all the gpu heat than having it have to be sucked out. Super stable and highly overclocked.

Thank you sir, this is the most important reason. I knew it but somehow I used to put it on the same level with compatibility issues. E.g.: to overclock so much, they modify power draw, EFI / BIOS settings, thus, only the most recent & popular motherboards recognize them -they depart from the specs for "good" reasons: erase lower-power settings from card-bios and modify standard power draw schemes so that they can be more efficient in larger power consumption ranges, but become even dangerous for other components -they have large spikes and finally say "hey we only increased the TDP a little", when they had so frequent 80 w spikes that the recommended PSU should be 600w not 500w, and with double capacitor sizes, meaning the best PSUs one can get. Also, due to the older PSU-s ripples and more stable input voltages expected people can't even boot to EFI / BIOS to try to change something. And to have no customer/service issues they just remove the standard compatibility requirement from their web site - who'll notice something has been removed (usually they notice something has been added), we just got used with it so much as to take it for granted: it''s common sense, everybody knows, of course PCI-e 3 is compatible with 2, down to 1, isn't it? No, not anymore with the custom cards, and for a long time. Damn, need to upgrade the motherboard.... Now we have the same GPU slot, gtx 16 series consumes less power than 10 series, it should work, right? Wrong again... "you forgot about the PSU ripples didn't you? you need a very stable PSU now, power don't matter anymore... can throw away your 1kW PSU to the bin and take this 500w 85% gold+ PSU that would do just right"... And when all the other conditions have been luckily met, supposing we've learned from on all forums/reviews/benchmarks and get it to work... wait, we can game only for 5 minutes: the heat is cycled inside the case... the case fans that were supposed to run slow and be inaudible can't seem to cope with it. So, couldn't we get away with the custom card without upgrading the case too, could we? :)))))

This is a great video. I am building a GPU miner. Slim pickens in terms of what's available and I have to settle for 1 blower and 5 customs. But this helps me understand airflow to make the coolest running rig. Thanks again.

blowers are better for miners with very close spacing, but custom coolers are great for open air rigs with spacing in between cards

Very helpful. Clarifies my now obvious need for a blower style 1070. Now i just need to find one that will fit in my case...

Blower for life. My gtx680 4GB OCed to 1300mhz runs at 65c under full load. Also, it depends on the fans....but those blower fans, despite being small, can move the same amount of air as a single 1300rpm 120mm case fan.

/\ actualky yeah we stare at the computer all the time asthetics is important blower style is better for smaller cases with tighter spaces that need to vent hot air out better

It depends on the design of the case. Mine is an old, cheap model for around 20-30 bucks. I threw out the front fan and changed the rear one from 80mm to 120mm (Hi-speed Bequiet silent wings with PWM control). In addition, I sealed some unnecessary holes and replaced the metal grill at the back with a nice thin, chrome one. All this brought down the SLI temperatures of the GTX970 by 5-8oC (MSI 100ME edition). The fan created a slight vacuum inside and the air flowed directly onto the graphics cards and other important components. The heat was removed outside. The temperatures were better by 2-3oC than with the case open. Today, designers do not know what the physics of gases is and they create housings with a million colorful fans that often work against each other
