Except he's totally wrong that the reason why you want high efficiency power supply is electricity cost. The reason why you want efficient power supply is because of reduced heat. Platinum power supply is good for extremely extremely high power system.

A good argument for an upper tier power supply could also be fan noise.... a high end PSU, that is more efficient tends to also have better fans that are quieter.... there are people who value that as well... but as always.. great video. As a general focus comment, I am happy there is someone dedicated to actually talk about and recommend the "sweet spot" or "bang for buck" products.... Everybody else seems to focus on the high end, top tier thing that not everyone can afford...

I will come back to "TECH DEALS" and the gentleman that gives me the information and steers me in the right direction. Excellent advice and instruction given in a clean and uncluttered way that distracts from the information I need. No mumbling, out of focus video, talking over my head, too much techno babble, straightforward information and suggestions that are spot on. This man needs to have a show on tv, because he is that good, until then I will come back to his KZbin videos for tech information.

I bought a Corsair RM750 about three years ago for my first build, which had a g3258 and a GTX 960. It is now inside my new Ryzen 7 build, which has an overclocked R7 1700, two overclocked GTX 1070s, two hard drives, two SSDs, two sticks of overclocked ram, 6 fans, an AIO water pump, and an LED strip. IMHO, the PSU is the only thing you can future proof, so I'd suggest you buy a 650 to 800 watt psu and you will be golden for any upgrades you might make in the future, and if you get a PSU with a 0RPM mode you willmost likely run it with the fan turned off most of the time, even when gaming.

Did you just unironically recommend an N1? ok, uh, where do I start? I guess by saying that efficiency isn't related to the quality or reliability of a power supply. Not all bronze units are created equal; a unit can be very efficient, but that doesn't matter much if its capacitors explode when you hook up a high transient draw graphics card to it. You did an excellent job explaining efficiencies and modularity, but there's a lot more that should influence a PSU buying decision than that. The main issue I have is that several of the units you recommended are group regulated, and one of which (the W1) exploded in a review of it. I highly recommend you look into group regulated units and why they're a really bad idea. Essentially, a power supply has to provide power in three different voltages: 3.3v, 5v, and 12v. The job of the power supply is to make sure that this power output is as consistent and clean as possible, so it would make sense that these would be regulated separately. On most modern units, this is the case; on group regulated ones, the 5v and 12v voltages are regulated *on the same coil.* This topology was common on much older units, but it worked because computers didn't draw nearly as much power as they do today; if the power draw on the 12v line gets too high (which is a real concern given how much modern cards can take,) regulation on the 5v line can fail to the point where it no longer meets the (already very lenient) ATX specification. Combine that with the fact that the W1 lacks functional OTP to protect itself from overheating when its low-quality capacitors inevitably get overdrawn, and you have a recipe for fireworks. edit: if you need more information, look at the tomshardware review of the N1. It should tell you about what you need to know.

This guy is good. He gives the most un-biased reviews yet. 1) Methodical explanations. 2) I think his reviews, help us get away from our dogmatic fanboy/girlism and be more objective. People for far too long approach reviews with their minds already made up. Basically we just want someone to confirm our preferences so we get the "I was right feel good". I think his reviews help us get away from that and learn to honestly listen to all angles. It's something I haven't seen in several years, maybe even a decade to be honest.

I tend to treat buying power supplies like a art. You can find some brands are better than others. I see a lot of cheaper power supplies that will supply all the power you need but not a clean signal. I used to only buy PC Power and Cooling (Now Seasonic) for many years because they had the least noise, or volt drop when a huge demand is placed on it quickly, and you would never have a sudden glitch, lockup ect that a real cheap supply would give you. Another thing to look at is how many watts are supplied on each supply line. Some or most have the majority of power going to the 12v and then the 5 and 3.3v line with a touch to the -12v which is really a no issue line. But when you buy the smaller rated power supplies you want to make sure that enough is going to the 12v line to power you cpu and graphics. I would never buy under 500w for a home built sys. and prefer a 700w just in case I want to go crazy in the future. A good power supply will last though many upgrades so it's one of the most important things you will buy for you computer. A good, clean stable voltage with very little noise will treat you well.

Great video, no doubt. I bought a EVGA 750B supply that is non modular but had nice all black cables. This thing is tough, my girlfriend spilled coke into the psu on the 2nd day of me having it (while it was running) because i was making a custom case and had jumped the 24pin while i was testing things. It cut off ofcourse, so i took the case apart, used an air compressor and paper towels on it for an hour to try to dry it out as fast as i could before it became sticky. 5 months later this thing has not skipped a single beat. Can't beat it, and it only cost me $36 on amazon on sale.
@yourfavoritelawnguy2722
@yourfavoritelawnguy2722 5 жыл бұрын
A quick tip though, figure out how much power your pc will use in total (pc part picker works great), double it, and buy the closest number to it while rounding up. So that way your only using half of its possible power, so the fan will not be loud and the psu will not be working hard, making it last longer

First off, I am so thankful for your videos @TechDeals! You are teaching me so much. I deeply appreciate your time. Second, I am seeking some guidance for a power supply question for our first build. I am learning how to build a computer with my boys because they will be doing KZbin videos/gaming etc. I am open to upgrading in the future and that is what brings my question. Will the power supply I have been given be more than okay? Ultra LSP650 650-Watt Power Supply - ATX, SATA-Ready, SLI-Ready, 135mm Fan, Sleeved Cables Or will it be a good choice to upgrade to: EVGA 750 B3, 80 Plus BRONZE 750W, Fully Modular, EVGA ECO Mode The reason why I ask, is the EVGA 750 will run me $64 after rebate and shipping costs. I also really like that it is modular. The free one will have all the power cords dangling and I would like to keep it clean looking. It also appears to be a great deal. I am curious if I should keep my money and go with the free power supply? Or upgrade to modular power supply with a 5 year warranty at a great deal? Or maybe...... I should go with the free power supply and upgrade our case to: Phanteks PH-EC416PSTG_BK Eclipse P400S Silent Edition with Tempered Glass, Satin Black Cases? Thank you in advance for any thoughts and suggestions for helping us with our first build together! Here is the system we are building: Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 (Will look into overclocking) Motherboard: Asus - STRIX B350-F GAMING ATX AM4 Memory: ADATA - XPG GAMMIX D10 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Storage: 1) Samsung - 850 EVO-Series 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive 2) Western Digital - BLACK SERIES 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Video Card: EVGA - GeForce GTX 1060 6GB 6GB SC GAMING Case: Deepcool - TESSERACT SW ATX Mid Tower Case Keyboard: Corsair - K70 RGB RAPIDFIRE Mouse: Logitech - G502 Proteus Core

As long as your building a rig with a single gpu setup the evga 550g2 is all you need and will last many many builds, it has a 7 year warranty, fully modular, 80+ gold, has eco mode, on tier one of the psu tier list, and is extremely quiet, and is only 80 dollars, as long as your not on an extreme budget this is an amazing psu for the price, I don't know why this psu wasn't on the list.

Nice overview! The only thing I believe was missed are some features offered by the Corsair 1000W 80+ Platinum. One, it lets you control the fan curves via the Corsair Link. Second, it is fully modular so that you can swap out and use custom cables. Those features might be appealing to some and worth the price premium.

Needing my computer to operate quietly and with best efficiency, the power supply I chose was an EVGA 850PQ. This power supply can operate silently without the fan on, or as I have set it, to run quietly at the fan's lowest speed. Only when its power output surpasses ~65%, does its fan speed increase, slightly at first. Max. fan speed is only utilized at max. power output, which is 850 W continuous @ 50°C - a superb max.power output spec. Listed at $160, has a 10 yr warranty, and is semi modular. Replacing a Bronze rated unit, ts platinum rating further reduces the waste heat released into the surrounding air. [I have no AC.]

The fan only spins when the power suppy is using about more than 40% of 750W for example so it means that at idle, 0 noise and for the fully modular PSU, if u want custom sleeved cables, You need to change all the cable 24pin included so it depends of the usage because a lot of people are spending money on esthetic. Apart from this great vid !

I did go the EVGA 750W G2 myself. Warranties interest me a lot. My last power supply lasted about 5 years which is not bad, but if I can pay a little more to save time and heartache later I am going to do it with computer parts. 750W was overkill but I knew it would carry into my next build and maybe beyond.

honestly, if you're on budget or don't feel like spending much on the PSU, I'd say go with the EVGA 430W, I have it works fine for one graphics card. You can go with 500W if you want since it's like $7 more on Prime, I only got the 430W because it shipped sooner for me.

I think you should really qualify some statements. Like using Amazon or Newegg if you're in say...Canada or the US. For quite a few countries, especially south of the equator, Amazon won't even post out electronics (or at least that's been my experience), and for someone like me in Australia the cost of postage for something like a PSU is so huge that it makes more sense to shop on eBay or locally.

Hi, I'm late to the party here. 2 things to say : 1st : Loving these no nonsense videos, keep it up :) 2nd : About efficiency , you might want to mention that a higher rated PSU like a gold (or above) generate less waste heat and so require less cooling. Hence tend to run quieter and cooler than a cheaper unit :)

This guy gives off 60s 'trustworthy nice guy' vibes, no bull just the facts.. I used an Corsair AX1200i and truly made use of its full potential in running overclocked CPUs and dual-core GPUs (boy do i miss those built-in 2 GPUs in one card but they were prone to overheating) and 2 GPUs in SLI. It served me well over 12 years and its still working fine although its getting on in age and I only recently replaced it with a HX1200 (Had wanted the AX1200i but it seems to be end of line now). It was probably overkill but the extra headroom certainly gave peace of mind especially when i was running 4 HDD/SSDs and tons of case fans.

Good video, but I would add regardless of the power supply you buy always check how many amps it has on the 12+ rail(that's what powers the major components) then multiply by 12(40 amps x 12 = 480 watts for example) make sure you're getting what you're paying for because some companies will sell powrer supplies rated for a certain number of watts that can't maintain that load for more than a few seconds then fail, sometimes frying the rest of your computer.

Good info. I would says 90% of people buy power supplies that are too big. I agree 750 watts is the sweet spots for sli and crossfire. My personal favorite is the G2 it's a great high quality power supply.

12:08 Two Titan X Pascal cards can easily pull over 600W alone, add 100W for CPU, at least, a bit more when overclocked, and then around 50W for other small things, depending on how much storage and case fans you have. So, a system with a consumer grade i5/i7, and 2 x Titan X can easily pull over 750W. Also, you don't want to be using like 720W and have a 750W PSU anyway. There are plenty of reasons to get more than a 750W unit. Sure, 750W is more than enough for an SLI 1070 system, but 750W is barely enough for XFire R9 390s. A lot of people have a single 390 and are adding a second now that they're coming down in price.

I always look at the +12v amperage output of the unit. 12v times amps equals watts. the critical components are the wattage of the cpu and the wattage of the gpu. there are a couple of apps like cinebench that tell you the power consumption of each component. Make sure you have enough headroom on power for the computer.
@BeanieDraws

one important factor you've missed (to some anyway) is the sound output. I at first was going to go with the EVGA G2 because I heard the fan only turns on at a specific point making it totally silent, but then people who have used it said it sounded like a blow dryer when the fans turned on. others saying it was louder than their graphics card on full load which is concerning. What's a good option to go with if your noise conscious? I'm going to be recording audio and I don't want power supply noise being picked up.

maybe i am late to the action. i not sure how much it matters. but the advice i get from my tech friend years ago was to buy a full or atleast semi modular power supply ALWAYS as it is easy to change broken cables or for management. got a semi modular one and have not regret at all. using a 650 watt bronze 80plus from day 1 until now from gtx 970 to 1070 with all the RGB peripheral and have no prob.the price for 500 vs 650 is like less then 30(sgd) so i dun see a point to bail it out

Very informative. I personally run a 8700k+1080+16GB+1NVME+2SATA SSD setup. A 450w bronze is doing me just fine. And it cost only 35 bucks here lol. Now I really dont see a point of spending more unless I need better cable management.
