DIY and save $300-$500. Blows the 3 amp fuse on the control board for my Goodman AC unit. This was done after I couldn't get an appointment soon enough for an AC repair person to come and check out when my AC is dead. 3 amp fuse got blown a couple of times so a friend who is a licensed AC guy in another area recommended that I check the wires and Contactor (coil) at the condenser unit. I did and found out it was burned. I went a head and replaced it. Everything is working as it should.

The repair guy wanted to charge us $1200 (same day appt.) to come over and check our AC. But I asked my husband to check on KZbin and watch your video. He fixed it himself. Labor = $0 fuse = $4.92 pack of three Contactor coil = $15. Saving $1180. Thank you

Lol this fixed my unit, was the fuse you stated, the contact block was fine but the wire connectors corroded, I wire brushed them all and we 40 the connectors, installed new fuse and ran like a champ! Last year the condensing fan ran but not compressor, capacitor was bulged out so I replaced it and that fixed that lol it’s an old ck30-1 unit.. love KZbin lol you home appliance and heating and cooling guys are the real mvp! Thank you for sharing the knowledge! Because of you I now work for a heating and cooling company as an apprentice!!!

MAN! Thank you for this video good sir!! I've been battling an AC unit at work. So far I've fixed all the old crumbling thermostat wires at the outside condenser. I also checked all the thermostat wires inside and outside for other shorts and found none. I made sure all the connections are nice and tight. I pulled the thermostat off the wall and checked all the connections there and they are good! And yet that damn fuse still pops! I've run out of options! So now I'm here. When I get to work tomorrow I'm going straight to the contactor to see if its shot! I really hope that's it! Because if its not then I'm stumped and going to have to call an AC repair company. I really don't want to do that! Wish me luck! Hahaha!

I would recommend that you stick to manufacture recommend fuse. If your AC is using 3amp then stick with 3 amp. change it to 5amp may cause other issues before the fuse blows out. :)

Thank you, your video set me on the path to discovery where I ended up fixing my AC not working. I was at the point of suspecting things in the furnace, and had never had a need in the past to pull of the furnace panel. 1. Thermostat, an old Honeywell was flashing "A.C" this code, though not documented does not refer to Air Conditioning but to no power to the thermostat. I verified with a multimeter. 2. My Furnace circuit board showed no blinking LEDs. It also had no visible fuse. It did however have a small push button fuse/min breaker on the board. 3. I reset the push button breaker. 4. When my thermostat was set to heat, no problem, the burners kicked in. 5. When set to Cool, the furnace circuit board breaker tripped. 6. Now moving to outside. After removing AC mains fuse _and_ switching of the low voltage using the switch on the exterior of the furnace, checking with multimeter and voltage detector of course. I removed the access panel to the wiring of the external AC unit and discovered a large nest of some sort. 7. After removing the nest I notice that whoever made it had gnawed away at the insulation on some of the low voltage wiring, looked like some bare copper to copper was touching. 8. I cut out the bad exposed wire, replaced with 14 AWG flexible, connecting the new bits of wirre with external grade wirewrap connectors. I also added some heatshrink to the remaining exposed thermostat wire and also used liquid electrical tape. 9.Voila working again. Total time spent about 2 - 3 hours including a trip to HD for some new connectors. 10. Happy wife happy life!

I have a similar circuit board [Amana, made by Goodman]. A/C pro neighbor told me to replace the 3 amp fuse. Your video was a big help, but on mine they saved a few pennies by using a wire jumper instead of the fuse. Still working on it. Also replaced the outside capacitor and contactor, and the inside 10 microfarad run cap for the blower motor. Ain't fixed yet, but this saved me a lot of time looking for a non-existant fuse.

This might help others with a system like yours, but without a fuse; with a jumper wire where the fuse should be. Getting there... my inside circuit board had a JUMPER WIRE where the fuse should be. Ran heating all winter, but when I ran the A/C first time, a bad contactor [relay] outside blew the inside transformer because there was NO $3 FUSE! If your system has a jumper on the inside circuit board and no fuse, check the outside contactor relay for damage BEFORE ever turning on the A/C unit! Long story short, I've spent about $200 for parts, including the outside fan motor, capacitor, and contactor, and the inside 10 microfarad fan run cap, and the new transformer found on Amazon Prime for about $26, due on Sunday after ordering Friday night. Again, long story short, if you have the time in early spring to live without heating or A/C for a few days, you CAN do it yourself. my unit is about 15 years or more years old, and updating all the minor components has to take a load off the compressor, possibly adding a few years to its life. The outside cap can was reading 8% off rated, and the inside fan run cap rated at 10 Mu-f was at 7.36. I consider it a couple hundred bucks well spent, modernizing all those components, that may extend the life of the compressor. I also bought a Fluke 117 HVAC meter that checks the capacitors, which I can use for other things as well long-term. You can save a lot of money on DIY, with an A/C pro friend's and neighbor's advice. I bought him a bottle of Casa Noble Single Barrel Extra Anejo Tequila for payment. I've lived without heat or A/C for two weeks and it ends tomorrow... Knock on wood.
@RevZafod
@RevZafod 6 жыл бұрын
Correction; Fluke 116, not 117. Installed new transformer just in time to get heat during a cold snap, to keep me warm after 2 weeks with no heating or cooling in N. Texas where Spring is variable.
@pineychristian
@pineychristian 5 жыл бұрын
The fuse was install for safety reasons and so you don't burn up transformer or circuit board which can easily happen with a jumper wire in place. Don't ever put a jumper wire in. Not even for testing. Your obviously a home owner trying to fix his own equipment. Thats why you had no heat/ac for 2 weeks. Pushing out bad ideas on people is a safety issue and will cost them more money

He should of found the reason why the fuse was blown, not just replace and go. But the price is fair. You are not really paying for the part but the knowledge, bc if you don’t know what you are doing you can do more harm to the unit but more importantly you can really hurt or even kill yourself.

Wish I'd found this video and would have saved $165 for the service call which also included a check of the system for pressure etc. Just bought the home last year. @@SnapFix I start getting E103 error which is over current in Y wire on Nest thermostat. this happened after the power surge last year but it was getting cold so I start using a heater with no issue. This year I went back to the thermostat and turn on AC it gave me the same error E 103. I then searched and concluded that I need to change the contactor. I replaced the contactor and reset the nest. it worked for one hour and then the same error. Then I decided to put the old thermostat and check if it is a faulty Nest thermostat. The new thermostat blew my fuse each time I tried turning on the AC. What could be the reason for all this? also, I have replaced the old one pole contactor with two poles with 40 amp high and 30 resistance. is this resistance too low?

Any idea if replaced with a 5 amp and not 3 amp would cause it not to power on thermostat?
@SnapFix
@SnapFix 5 жыл бұрын
Good question so I called my friend (Licensed AC guy). Per his explanation and recommendation. He said DON'T do it. If you use a 5 amp fuse in place of a 3 amp, it can and will cause more damage because the fuse has a specific amperage rating to handle the load in case of a surge. He said that it may not even be a thermostat. It too much power going through the system.

I wouldn't recommended though because these fuses are designed for load breaker too.

It is fairly simple to replacing the fuse (out and in) . I would ok to tape a clip and show you but youtube doesn't have that feature (yet).

You don't say what to look for or how to install.

Please turn off your main AC circuit breaker or circuit breaker or the to be safe. If you have never done it before, I would suggest to mark which wire goes where. Or you can take picture to help you. This will help to reinstall it much easier. It has a few screws. As far as what to look for is the coil itself first to see if it burned or damage in anyway.

Your video should not be showing how to fix things without testing or without using safety precautions before working on HVAC equipment. Its not a good idea showing someone how to do this without checking for power even though power is off. I didnt see you use a meter or any kind of electrical tester what so ever. You plug in the furnace???? Just cause there is a burn spot on contactor you replaced it? What about checking with meter?
