A nice Monday morning shower for the members of E22 as they shut off a hydrant that sheared off under pressure. Bystanders reported that a contractor was illegally tapping into the hydrant with a small garden hose and… well, the result was this. A massive torrent of water was reaching over 40 feet in the air and reaching as high as the 4th floor.

Hydrants usually all have a shutoff located several feet away that have a cover. This cover wasn’t easy to open. This is why firefighters have to be good problem solvers and not get frustrated. I’m more surprised by the fact they didn’t control traffic in this street. I’m ten times more afraid of idiot drivers than I am of a broken hydrant.

I joined the FVFD as a 40-year old rookie and one of the first calls was to a house that encountered a burst pipe where the water service entered the basement wall, just before the meter. The basement was filling up quicker than we could pump it out & the water department was an hour out. There was a hand-hole curb box in the middle of the paved driveway that housed the main shut off. The valve-operator was covered in gravel & mud that prevented it being able to turn off with the curb wrench. I asked one of the firemen if they had a shop vac at the nearby station, suggesting we could suck the debris out from around the valve to gain access. They all looked at me like I was out of my mind before finally getting on the radio and requesting the vac. I had the water turned off within minutes. It’s hard getting respect/support from some of these volunteer small town lunk-head heroes as a rookie. I lasted 3 1/2-years there. The stories I could tell ! They’re definitely an asset to the community but, oh-boy. Kudos to the professionals.

After working for the water department for 32 years I've been through this several times and with small towns it's normally the water department that has to deal with this and not the fire department. The local volunteer fire departments do not have the training to operate a fire hydrant properly it seems and most of the Damage Done to fire hydrants are by Volunteer Fire Fighters who don't understand how fire hydrants operate. If you notice there is an out of service tag on the 4 and 1/2 and the hydrant was previously nailed and broken and should have been shut off at the main valve in the first place. But yeah professional firefighters usually always get the shit end of the stick but always do a great job no matter what.

Wife of a first responder here in SE Texas where we've been hit by harvey, imelda, laura, just to name a few in the last 4 years, we just buried 3 friends, all in the same family, including a 21 year old and a 30 something year old, both unvaxxed firefighters. They cost the lives of others at high risk in their family over bs politics. Not only does it make it harder for those vaxxed, we don't want to lose friends that battled hurricanes and floods that helped rescue loved ones etc. We've lost 3 leos on a small force of less than 21 and had 1 more permanently disabled after coming off ECMO due to covid. Here it's not a choice, even deep in Trump country. You MUST be vaccinated, you must also still keep up other LONG required vaccines required by TDH. Months ago mass hiring took place in anticipation of antivaxxers here refusing to comply to stay employeed because there's no room for that kind of arrogance PERIOD. The Medical center in Houston, the largest of it's kind in the world with over 80 hospitals and medical offices in a square mile set precedence as well. IF you work in a hospital or answer 911 calls as a leo, a ff, or a medic, politics have no place on the job. NONE. You follow the rules or take your selfish butt home. The US military is required to be vaxxed...you don't hear them crying and running home to mama. My husband had covid patients last February he transported before ppe protocols went into effect, before we knew it was here, I ended up in ICU 10 days later and almost died from this nasty virus. I have sacrificed everything as a spouse through this hell including almost my own life. There IS NO EXCUSE at this point, none, to not be vaccinated, safe, and doing your job and answering the call to help others. The minute they thought of themselves first made them a liability to themselves, their families, and sadly and most of all their peers. There's no room for that in saving lives. NONE!!! They've shown their true colors and their peers aren't happy...they haven't been for a long time. They won't lose sleep over them not coming back. A local sheriff had to resort to punishing men after they whined and refused to comply, why? Because he lost over 18% of his force in 6 months!! We had the highest TRA covid rate in the entire state of Texas for months as Delta spiked. Prison transports to UTMB in Galveston were nonstop, the ferries constantly carrying ambulances, 12+ a day at one point. Now with SARS CoV2 Omicron having 10 spike mutations versus the only 2 Delta had there's real concern about the future. They can't handle going through that fear and exhaustion again. Helll no.

What I want to know is how the hydrant got broken with those bollards in the way.
@samward7633
@samward7633 Жыл бұрын
I know your comment was a year ago, but I'll quickly explain it. The description explained that a contractor was using the hydrant to use a garden hose. A hose that small with the amount of pressure those hydrants can provide, means that the extra pressure had to come out of somewhere. In this case, the weakest part was the bottom of the hydrant (Could be due to multiple things including rust, bad seals, or just loose connections) so the hydrant sheared off once the pressure started coming out of the bottom of the hydrant.
@rupe53
@rupe53 Жыл бұрын
@@samward7633 ... I spent 20 years in the fire service, so I know a thing or two about hydrants and their inner workings. The pressure remains roughly the same, regardless of being turned off or using any size hose. The pressure (when off) is not within the hydrant normally, but contained in the water main, some 6 feet down, because that's where the valve is located in northern climates. (we have frost issues) Spewing water like this only happens in movies that were shot in warm areas like California where the valve may be located higher. (they don't have frost issues) Hydrants are also fairly watertight so even if it was left on (valve open) with all the caps in place it won't leak. OTOH, it will be full of water under pressure. This answers part of the question. What remains is how the hydrant got damaged to the point of being broken off, without someone damaging those bollards. The water pressure alone will not do that.

I hope they took everything out of their pockets first. Was the valve opposite-thread?
@drone521
@drone521 2 жыл бұрын
Having been a water department employee for 39 years...yes, that was an open right valve.....the system I worked in had around 20,000 valves with open right as the standard. Our hydrants were also open right. However, being a large county authority, different systems we acquired had open left standard!!! A great case for accurate record keeping!!!! The two different standards came about because of jealousy and rivalry.... "thats my shit, and you are not touching it "

In front of the fire hydrant as well as along the street and at each intersection is supposed to be numerous water valve for the water main pipe feeding the fire hydrant. Just turning off one of the water valve will be making easy to solve the FH issue.

Edith in a small town maybe but turning off water like that in large commercial areas creates a lot of issues. As that hydrant is flowing it's not backflowing any contaminated water into the system which makes for brown water and people hate brown water coming out the taps.

Some valves are open right but most of them are open left I guess it all depends on what your system looks like you can have it either way but it's always good to have just one direction so you don't have to mark the hydrant valve that open right plus it gets confusing when you're exercising your valves

Bravo! The raising of valve covers to road surface grade, and regular valve well maintenance (removal of debris from top of valve stem) would expedite the process of open or in this case, close the hydrant valve. What if this had occurred during an emergency in the middle of winter? Keep up the great work FDNY

Idk how that can happen because i work for my city dpw...the hydrants are designed to break away if hit , the valve is 6ft below ground below frost level and the shaft is also designed to snap off without opening the valve....the hydrants in places where we have cold winters are all designed to snap and not open....only places where theres no real winter have above ground pressurized hydrants that are always full of water.....ours have to be pressurized first as the water is below the frost line underground and isolated via valves.

the seat ring unscrewed the plunger and lower rod was forced out due pressure if the seat ring had been screwed in properly water pressure would have kept that plunger sealed Good wet shut down ! imagine if that were below zero and that water froze after it landed you wouldn't get near it and they would have had to shut down Gate valves for blocks in all directions it's a good thing FDNY carry Gate wrenches Do they also carry service sidewalk keys for water service and a key for Gas service ?
