The death of Cus was a huge loss for Mike, but I think his career went downhill when he fired Kevin Rooney. Rooney was appointed by Cus before he died to take over as Mike’s trainer and Rooney was very good because Cus taught Kevin everything. Unfortunately, Don King got in Mike’s ear and Rooney was fired shortly after.

Holy christ, Tyson is a goddamn legend. I may not have been alive when Mike was at his best, but looking back at who he was leaves me in awe of the man. Looking at my own struggles, hellish as they may be and have been, I feel like he proves I still have so much farther to go in life. Iron Mike feels like, to me at least, a representation of a spirit that refuses to fold against any odds, when some of us can’t seem to win, he proves its possible, sending opponents and struggles alike down again and again. I would be lying if I said a lot if what motivates me to keep going nowadays didn’t stem from Tyson’s warrior spirit. So on that note.. thanks Mike, you’ve given me a lot of help, more than you’ll ever know, and I really doubt I’m alone in that.

Everyone talks about Mikes power...but he had a tremendous defence in the form of body and head movement. He would crouch down and bob and weave often it looked like he was being tagged but he was already moving away from the shot leaving very little power in the shot. But constantly he was looking and waiting using his defence to make the other guy open and BAM!

Mike tyson would probably not have been able to become a professional boxer without cus d amato. Mike, thank you terrible childhood, just didnt have enough wisdom/maturity to handle emotions, distractions and bad decisions. Thats why i think he could not become a good boxer on his own. I think, for example, that ali would have been able to become champion on his own( with any coach ). He just had it all. Thats why he is the greatest in my opinion But in the right hands ( from cus d amato ) mike was like a living weapon controlled by a tactision who knew where to aim, when to shoot and how to win And mike was one hell of a lethal weapon..

Cus had Mike using a 300 pound punching bag that most other boxers refused to train on. It was used to train short heavyweights with limited reach but bring more crushing power in close proximity to their opponent. Marciano trained in the same scenario but had 3 more inches of reach than Mike had. Mike was eventually eased off the 300 pound bag as Cus thought Mike would develop microfractures in his hands. So on they went to training on the water bags. Simply amazing the tutelage by D’Amato in his final act.

THIS is an absolute textbook example of ......."It's not about how hard you can hit........It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward" Mike never stopped moving forward through all of those blows. IMO Mike is a LEGEND already, not many people achieve that in their own lifetime. I am about 3 years younger than Mike and I'm so glad that I got to see his whole career.. How many fighters do you know that Pay Per View had to add a resolution that if the fight didn't last a certain amount of time they would refund your money........LOL I remember the lead up to fights, getting the PPV ready and you better be sitting in front of the tv because it could likely be over quick............I think one time it was somewhere around 30 seconds in the first round and that was it.

4:38 Actually, wrong...Gross was not out for the count there, he got back up and fought for a few more seconds, and then was knocked down again. The ref didn't allow it to continue and Gross was pissed, he even shoved the ref for calling an end to the fight.

Notice how Gross threw haymakers from the side with his elbows already extended, whereas when Tyson threw from the side, his arm was still cocked, forcing the weight of his body behind the punch. This was a contest between a fighter who didn't fully know what he was doing and one who absolutely did.

When Cus was still around, Mike was well-spoken and pretty reserved. You could see the intelligence behind that hulking frame of his. When Don King got to him, he started doing a 180 in terms of his demeanor in and outside the ring. He was angrier and short-tempered while in the ring, he was no longer as feared. I'm glad Mike's the person he is now. A living legend to be sure.
