I've had my B&G Macaw for 29 years now and love him dearly. Of course he can be a real pain in the ass at times too. Easy to train and mostly well behaved. Usually just vocal and loud a couple of times a day and I can tolerate that. Very considerate (quite) while I'm sleeping. Has quite a vocabulary and knows several food items and will ask for them. Actually combined two words he already knew in context, totally surprised me. I think the human ego keeps us from admitting how intelligent these guys really are. Have fun with Cookie, he/she deserves a great life.

That’s so awesome. I feel like there’s things I’m learning every day about how unique and special each type of bird is. But especially our macaw! Thank you for sharing. I’m wondering how much more cookie will learn to say over the period of time we are together in our life.

What a wonderful baby, she is gorgeous! I love macaws. My Quaker’s groomer brings over some of his rescues and always love holding them. Their sound is much more relaxed than a little Quaker! Lol

I have a blue and gold he is about 15 years old. He drinks a real big dog dish full of water two times a week. I cannot get over the water he drinks. He is potty trained I do love that. He is getting to the point now, I wake up in the middle of the night and he’ll make a little noise. I walked right over there and he jumps right on me. He likes to sleep on the corner of my bed And when I wake up in the morning he jumps right on my arm and right back to his gates so he can do his morning thing. I love that. They are an awesome path

Just be cautious leaving a free dish of water for a week as bacteria builds up and parrots are highly susceptible to bacterial infections. They wash their beaks and mouths in their bowl, which leaves food particles floating that turn foul. That’s very cool he’s potty trained!

The swinging perch looks like it would be easy to make. I think my blue & gold would love one. She is 13 yrs & very active! Unlike my other b & g she as a quite a bit older, 45 yrs. She passed last year. I miss her something awful. Our new Bird is a rescue too. She is like a 2 yr old, but all her life! Just like my other Macaw. Thanks for the video.

Great video. I have a Blue and Gold and a Scarlet Macaw. Where did you get that hanging swing for Cookie or did you make it? Would like some more information on that swing. Macaws have alot of droppings which requires daily cleanup. Its all about a daily routine which makes caring for these amazing birds manageable. They are a lifetime commitment and can live 60-70 years depending on care, diet and daily attention. Thank you.

Thanks! I try :) we make all of our birds play areas! Chains from Home Depot (stainless) eye hooks also, and clips. Bought the branch from a local bird store in Tampa and cut it down. We made another one for outside out of a 1.5” pine dowel but beware it collects mold easily if rained on so I’m always cleaning it. I need to replace it with a branch. Thanks for sharing! I knew it was a lifetime commitment, my close friend has a 30yo blue and gold who we will take if/when she passes! I enjoy the routine for the most part, it can get to be pretty messy at times but it’s our sacrifice for keeping our birds mentally and emotionally healthy!

Tempted to get one of these creatures, but concerned about getting bitten, crapped on and the amount of time and effort they require. How long each day would you say that you spend caring for the parrot? Does he crap on you? Ever been bitten?
@bestflockingfriends
@bestflockingfriends 3 жыл бұрын
About half an hour a day of care? An hour maybe on days I do full cage cleanings. I spend flexible hours with them, sometimes training sometimes just hanging out and cuddling. Yes they poop on you all of the time, and I’m rarely bitten. Maybe once a month.

@@GrammarNazi1988 Hmmmm, while it happens a macaw shouldn't be pooping on you all the time. It probably has a medical problem if it does. I don't have a macaw but I've never taken 'friendly fire' from friends and family's macaw. They just poop on their perch. If they can't get to the perch they'll often hold it as long as they can. I've only seen them poop on hands while being held. They'll wait until their out of cars/carriers too. They're very smart animals. Bites...yeah....I got a bad one from a Grey. My Aunt never gave treats with fingers. Just put them in his bowl. I tried and got a painful bite! You just have to be smart. Take precaution with birds you don't know.

I want one parrot but every body that has a parrot has got more then one so yeah do you think it's best to get one macaw or two sun conures. Or do you just recommend me not getting a parrot
@tzxazrael
@tzxazrael 3 жыл бұрын
it really depends. have you experienced how loud parrots are in person? hoew messy, and destructive? parrots are the #1 most rehomed pet. so many people who get one "because they're so cute/pretty" just are NOT prepared for the noise/mess/destruction. Cookie and the Sunnies are just gorgeous birds, and Sam is wonderful but "differently pretty", but there's no guarantee the bird you get will be sweet and well behaved like these guys. what are you gonna do if they're just screaming all the time, or they damage something important? what are you gonna do if you have to go away for some time? Sun Conures live, on average, 15~30 years... Macaws live for 60+ years! (the oldest on record claims to be over 112!) what are you gonna do if they OUTLIVE you? in short... they can be wonderful companions, but they require a LOT of work, a LOT of patience and care, and a TON of research and preparation. the first step is to be honest with yourself, and decide if you're prepared to dedicate a large part of your life to raising and caring for a bird.
