A little watersnake trolling motor with a 20amp LiFePo battery would fit that nice. My 76 yo fishing buddy uses one and it is on my wishlist. You'll save a ton on earplugs :^D

nice little boat, I made one using 5 barrels for my grandfather so he could use it in are old homestead pond and help keep it cleaned out. Thing lasted 20 years before it needed new wood, gave it to one of my dads buddies and he replaced the wood with aluminum strips and he still uses it to this day. he has a little electric engine with one big battery and a solar panel as a roof he can get a full days worth of fishing with it.

That's so cool! When I was a kid , we had steel barrels cut in half like that. With Gallon jugs tied all around.

I love your videos Man you show all the trouble that you go through to make your wonderful ideas of reality. Maybe you should try looking around on temu for some boat motors I've been getting a lot of stuff from there lately, been surprised at their surprisingly good quality cheap stuff. Have you thought about making a houseboat? I would love to see your diy houseboat so much! I need all the ideas I can get lol

Good job Paul! Last Saturday I saw a guy selling two blue barrels. I was thinking of buying them, but couldn’t think of a project for just two. I have seen larger boats built with several. I wish I saw this video last week!

Paul … Thank you for introducing us to your nephews!!! Love the new boat; not something I can get into and out of. Trying to figure out how you steer it. With another barrel, you could comfortably fish in it. Something like a plastic barrel kayak. Beautiful build!!! Better video!!! God bless!!! Chuck Knight from Atascocita (Houston), Texas. ✝️🎣👨🌾🦌🙏
@paulwelkinsdiyАй бұрын
Thanks Chuck. I've thought of making it a four half barrel boat after seeing the low water line in the video. That would also make it safer to carry the extra weight of a deep cycle battery and trolling motor.

Great to see you Paul! I have Caught myself asking "how would Paul Elkins do it?" When working on my solar e-bike pusher trailer. Also, we are in need of another ' wisdom ramblings' video. Getting deep out here!

@appelmoes9397Ай бұрын
Nice simple concept. Like the idea of making it put a single barrel with a continueous connection like your first 2 halves. I feel like the bottom gaps dont look very hydrodynamic. What if you cut up the barrel in smaller pizza slices with a continuous bottom and add 2 side pannels for waterproofing and strenght

Hangkai 3.5 and the 3.6 hp are good cheap little outboards, on my second season works great I've done a few mods one of them improved the loud two strokes engine a lot, boilerbad1 has a lot of videos on the Hangkai, they get a bad wrap they just need a Little tinkering and they are very reliable. Water cooling pipe needs attention too it's bent over at 90 degree angle, honestly worth considering, I've got videos on my channel too. Cool boat by the way 😎

@rongarrett1366Ай бұрын
You and Steve Wallis both posted videos featuring homemade barrel boats the same day. His had a homemade bike camper on it. That would make a good lifeboat for his camper boat (he had an inflatable).

Just go electric, it's not like you are going on long journeys or need to get anywhere fast. Peaceful and reliable.

Pretty cool little boat. The seating is a issue though. Cheers, Paul!
@paulwelkinsdiyАй бұрын
This is a rough design, but I really like the seat inclination. Very comfortable, and easy to swing around 180 degrees to access the rear drum or start the engine.

Great video as always Paul, thanks. I wonder if filling the gaps with your remaining quarter barrel could help get her up onto a plane :)

I've wondered about adding a 6mm sheet to the bottom, filling in the gaps. Not sure I'll pursue that though.

These are cheaply available in the next town over from me, mainly leftovers from food industry. Any tips on making strait cuts in plastic barrels? I'm thinking laser level and a sharpie for marking it. I guess I need an excuse to make a table saw cross slide.
@jasonharrison25Ай бұрын
Skill / circler saw cuts them wonderfully. Just clamp a straight edge on it and slide the saw along the edge. Nice and straight cuts

Paul....can you build a paddleboard? I want a rigid one I can put on my trucks headache rack but I don't want to spend a grand on it.
@ttnynyАй бұрын
Neat idea. I don't think you could put an engine on one where I live: all motorized craft must be registered - regardless of the size of the boat or the size/type of the motor - and all homemade craft must be inspected by the state and given a hull number before they can be registered.
@tgdomnemo5052Ай бұрын
Flip the open side towards the wet stuff to make it "go" even better 😅

Maybe you can modify that old motor into an electric outboard so you don't have to deal with the noise.
@jamesonpace726Ай бұрын

@AlteredCarbonsАй бұрын

@TrueHelpTVАй бұрын
Stick a door hinge on your seat and it will still auto adjust without slipping apart. I would experiment with a cheap plastic welder and see if you can cut and melt this material together. I expected a bit more flotation from this, but your draft line was surprisingly low. *Cant help but wonder if some outward stabilizers would have made all the difference; could have been 2 inch stiff PVC pipe wrapped in pool noodles from the dollar store and seal the pipe for extra flotation.
@paulwelkinsdiyАй бұрын
Adding the extra barrel half would do the trick without any extra cost and it would keep the boat narrow.
@johnknight9150Ай бұрын
Gotta get yourself a little Honda motor. They're nice and quiet (so I hear... or don't).
@corndog2835Ай бұрын
you really need to put some floatation on that, if it starts to leak or gets turned over, it will sink like a rock.
@paulwelkinsdiyАй бұрын
Which would be fine with me. I'm done with this beast.
@DrXupetinАй бұрын
🙏🙏🙏
@macrumptonАй бұрын
it seems like you would get less drag going sideways.
@paulwelkinsdiyАй бұрын
I was hoping to get more speed with the 3 horse motor, possibly getting the hull to skip like a rock. Maybe a 5 horse would make that happen.
