I think this was right after they played one of the loudest gigs of the 60s: A triple blitzkrieg of deafness and hearing loss from the MC5, The Stooges, and Blue Cheer at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit in June '68.

This reminds me of watching bands on tv as a kid in the 60s. They first used to put 95% of the camera on whoever was singing, then maybe the other 5% you might get a quick blip of the rest of the band. Then it progressed to getting all artsy with a lot of effects and you might not really see the band much at all. I remember watching local tv show with local bands and my sister getting mad because all the camera was on ugly creepy lead singer and none on the cute guy playing guitar

These guys were amazing, just a power trio, and everybody notices what a monster Paul Whaley was, but Leigh Stephens was creating a wall of sound like no other guitarist at the time, and Dickie Peterson established a standard for bassist/vocalists that nobody has exceeded. The various incarnations of Blue Cheer produced some great rock and roll that was never as widely recognized as it should have been.

I wanna be in a power trio. Except for better money. You don't need to practice all the time for other band members changing their parts. And if all 3 members of the trio can sing in tune, you'll end up with some pretty good harmonies.

Blue Cheer was on The Mike Douglas Show and played Out Of Focus. The sheer impact of the volume on the studio equipment caused wavy lines to appear on the TV screen. Actually, Leigh Stephens left because Dickie and Paul were way more into getting high and the drugs became more important to them. Makes me wonder if there was tension between the band here because Leigh barely ends the song and just does a kind of "fuck it" on the guitar. Check out the very end. No one ends a song like that if they just killed it. Seems kinda pissed to me. Yep, this was the classic lineup. The rest of the output of the band was shit after this album, until Beast is Back which rocked pretty fucking hard.
