You have to do the original by Eddie Cochran from 1957. This came out in 1968 and then my favorite version is by The Who which came out in 1970. I recommend all of them.

Rock bands took their names sometimes from products. One such was Blue Cheer, a laundry detergent. It started as Cheer, then they made it blue. A major breakthrough :) There were also different varieties of LSD. Initially there was only one legal manufacturer of LSD, Sandoz pharmaceuticals in Switzerland I believe. The CIA bought up all of the legal LSD and used the Hells Angels to distribute it. I won't go down that rabbit hole but it was apparently relatively easy to make if you had some basic chemistry so many labs popped up. For a time back in the day it was everywhere. It was marketed under various names, orange sunshine, windowpane, purple microdot, blotter acid, Blue Cheer, etc. The band obviously wanted to associate themselves with that product, not the detergent. This was their only "hit". But they played on for decades, Loud and Proud - "legendary". They played at such a high volume that it was said their second album, Inside/Outside, had to be recorded outside because they were experiencing hearing loss. This came out when I was in high school and I played it to death. There was nothing subtle about Blue Cheer

Reached #14 on the Billboard charts in 1968. Arguably the primary influence of heavy metal into the mainstream. Not the first, but songs that charted high are the recordings that had the main influence with the listening public. Roundabout by Yes is the primary progressive song, reaching #13 in 1972. People need to understand the only access to music was am hit radio. Summertime Blues was in air rotation with Bobby Goldsboro's Honey, Cry Like A Baby by The Box Tops, Young Girl by The Union Gap, Lady Madonna by The Beatles, Percy Sledge, Sly And The Family Stone, Smokey Robinson and The Rascals. Fans of all that music were hearing Summertime Blues everyday. Same with Roundabout in 1972. It was in rotation with Roberta Flack, America, Michael Jackson, Donny Osmond, Aretha Franklin and Sonny and Cher. There is influence on musicians and there is influence on the public. Recordings that made hit rotation in the U.S. are the ones that had the most influence on what was to come.

This was at the beginning of what they called 'heavy' music, rock and blues were starting to go with a far more powerful delivery. Some people argue whether or not this is the start of heavy metal, but it doesn't really matter (unless there's a test later). But it was heavy and it was new and it was when a lot of bands started to dial it to 11.

Blue Cheer was famous for three things: This cover, being very loud, and also being the name of a laundry detergent. Wall of Marshall amp, and all that teenage stuff. MC5 was another band along these lines.

Allow me to say this: "Blue Cheer" was just one of MANY types of acid (LSD) one could purchase way back when life was fun. Lots of people "freaked out" on acid, but I never had any kinds of issues doing any kind of acid...always had a GREAT time. I believe that the only prerequisite for doing acid was to actually be able to use one's brain. Great tune, BTW

I was 15 when this came out and I can still hear my father telling me to turn off that garbage. Good thing I didn't have headphones. My hearing would be worse than my wife says it is.

A classic! < I love this song! There are different version of different artists out there! This one by "Blue Cheer" is quite a heavy one for sure! :) Eddie Cochran's version sound more like summertime than blues and very light, but not heavy! < Give it a try to compare the versions, please ... it's from the 50s! *dance

Ahh, no one was noisy like Blue Cheer! You either like it or you don’t. There’s no acquiring a taste for BC. Not a ‘daily driver’ for me but I do like to drag it up from out of the basement, dust it off and give it a whirl now and then. Maybe it brings back some of those old [ancient] LSD memories 🤪
