It's interesting that the hero of this show isn't exactly noble. She's not a female version of Aragorn from Lord of the Rings. I did love how her character was given actual growth. She goes through training, makes mistakes but learns. In spite of her skill, she gets severely wounded in many of her fights. Yeah, some of the fights sort of approach John Wick levels of insanity but in a good way. Often times the lone female kicking the crap out of multiple men reaches Looney Tunes level of disbelief but in this, you sort of get it. She trained a lot. She increased her strength being a blacksmith and wearing her training weights (which also had a cool dual purpose). She's a female character done right IMO. A strong character who happens to be female, not a strong character because she's female. I do not believe she falls under the Mary Sue trope.

Just watched it through for the forth time. Can't get enough of it. Hope they maintain the high standards they set for the first season. They hit a home run. Aside: The Dutch were allowed to maintain a trading station in Nagasaki during the Edo period. (Not the British) The Spanish and Portuguese were all thrown out. Hidden gem: Kenneth Branagh's villain is NOT your work-a-day, one-dimensional villain. He's evil and creepy and smart and complex. If you're going to have a hero (Mizu) then you must have a villain worthy of your hero. Branagh's Abijah Fowler is deliciously, sickeningly wicked.
@DrApplesauce Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Fowler is an incredibly complex and deep evil character

The portuguese founded nagazaki and spread christianity... the spanish were residual they were not allowed in japan due to Treaty of Tordesillas., but yh pretty much i agree, just not with the villain being irish, he had to be portuguese or dutch, made much more sense.

I watched the whole series in pretty much one day and it is perfect in every way just superb work all around I honestly can not find fault in this show and am looking forward to the next season, it instantly became one of if not my favourite show it shows not just the racism but how hard it was to be a woman in those days and it brought out just about every emotion in me at different points of this show, my heart definitely breaks for her when she first finds love and many other characters have such growth it really is a master-class in every aspect. Brought me to tears as well. I was just shocked that there isn't more buzz about it online I was expecting to find reviews with 100k+ views all over the place and I hope that as the week's go by more people discover this absolutely beautiful piece of art.

I thought the show is set in Japan in the mid-1600’s, after the Tokugawa shogunate closed off the country to the world, the only exception being Dejima island in Nagasaki. Christians were persecuted into hiding (something Fowler touches on in the show) and any shipwrecked foreign sailors caught on the islands were immediately executed. This continued until the arrival of the US Navy led by Commodore Perry in 1854, sowing the seeds for the Meiji restoration a decade later

There is no original Japanese audio for this show. It's American and that should be obvious. Show is honestly so good, I would personally rate 8/10 just for two reasons. Firstly the realism wasn't consistent in some parts especially with how the fire was catching so quickly in the final episode but Mizu and Fowler still managed to escape, and similarly with how Heiji managed to escape the arrows just by running, or Mizu being able to dodge bullets in the final episode, or her needing to recover after fighting the four fangs but not after fighting an whole army of people in ep5. Secondly, episode 5 really felt like the peak, episode 6 was great too, ep7 was alright, and ep8 was good. It felt like everything was too rushed in the final episode. Apart from that, you're so correct, song choice to animation to dialogue even, everything was so well presented!

Its good BUT the fact alone that the bad guys aren't either portuguese or dutch kinda grinds my gears. The writers should have read a book... or two. I mean, the portuguese are the number one reason why they shutdown to all foreigners, after founding the port city of nagazaki and bringing the guns and worse: christianity. The dutch still remained a couple decades till they also got expelled. This anglo-saxon centrism is super innacurate
