2:45 can we just talk about how smart that blue jay was? He realized the peanut he grabbed was smaller than the rest and grabbed a bigger one barely thinking about it.

are they related to crows? My understanding has always been that they are related to grackles but I have never heard that they are related to crows.

Crows and Jays are closely related. They are Corvids, they can learn to talk, both can be tamed to live in the house. They are really smart. I've always thought the picking of certain peanuts was done by weight, not size.

Belated year later response but my blue jays do the same thing. They'll carefully pick up peanuts till they find the one they think is biggest. They're even methodical enough that they put the rejected peanuts back right where they found them.

@1:54 I just learned the Woodpecker's legs were not designed for perching on a limb, but rather for clinging to the side of a tree. It definitely looks out of it's element standing on the board.

Blue Jays are very smart. I have a breeding pair of them living nearby and they eat cat food lol. They will do their loud call into my window to get my attention when they want some food. I've even had them follow me to the edge of the park I live by on my walks. I have some Robins that are pretty smart as well.

One of my squirrels brought me a gift today! I’ve run out of peanuts and sunflower seeds and am waiting for my order. It’s been two days! I feed them 40 lbs of blackoil sunflower seeds, and 20 lbs of in the shell unsalted peanuts per month. They must have thought I was starving, because one just stole the bird’s orange to drop off on my doorstep. I love my squirrels! If I don’t get their package today, I’ll have to mask up and go into Walmart.....

Very funny😉🐦👏👏👏 I'm in Minnesota & have fed BlueJays for years. Yes--- Their ultimate favorite seeds are peanuts in the shell! (UNSALTED)!!! I have always admired their intellect & lovely vocal variety. 💗🤗💗 Keep taking good care of them. 👍

Last year was beyond horrible for me. My son died in January and then in October my last of my three brothers died and left me feeling there was nothing left to live for. Then one day I saw a cardinal sitting on my son's motorcycle just looking at me. Then chipmunks started to show up. Then squirrels and now all kinds of birds. I feed them all now and look forward to seeing them every morning. sometimes they will knock on my bedroom window to get me up. Nature is such a blessing to mankind!

Yes they do. also beechnuts and acorns. In fact they help spread the development of oak trees because they engage in caching behavior with acorns, similar to squirrels but farther from the "parent" tree.

I didn't know that blue jays ate peanuts until I fed my squirrels. And also didn't know that thrashers love them and woodpeckers. I had to stop putting peanuts out because One of my squirrels would take the peanut and go dig a hole and bury it. At first I thought he's doing this because of the seasons. No, he was burying them so that his buddies Wouldn't get to eat them! Because then I would see him go back later and dig them all up and make holes in my backyard! So, no more peanuts for a while...

That’s a poor attitude, I look at this way , there only doing what nature made them to do. They dig holes and bury them so the Blue Jays won’t get them .

I love everyone except the grackle. They keep killing my baby sparrows. The common grackle is a dangerous bird to have at your feeders. If you find dead birds all over your yard like I have, watch for a while to see what the grackles are doing. I couldn't believe my eyes when I found out a bird that comes to my feeders could do such a thing. I did research on this and found that it is common and happens all over. Sorry, but I had to post this in case anyone else that feeds the birds is having the same problem. The other birds are so beautiful and the little squirrel too!

@jobrock1079
@jobrock1079 6 жыл бұрын
That's a Red Bellied Woodpecker and I think its legs are positioned like that because they typically hold onto a tree vertically and peck at it - so its feet and legs are positioned to grab and hold, claw like, onto the side of the trunk of a tree.
