This video doesn't show what happened in the first inning. Soto was struck out on a clear strike...but ump called it a ball. Soto went on to hit a 2 run homerun and it cost Manoah a ton of extra pitches. That's why everyone was so jumpy.

Just seen it on MLB TV. 100% a strike 3 on Soto. Down the middle at the knees, a whole ball inside the bottom of the zone. An absolute shocker by the ump. Then he did this in the next inning. MLB needs to investigate and punish him.

@@dper1112 I agree umps have it rough, but a certain level of ability to do their job is expected right? Have a secondary robot making calls that the crew chief instead of being on the field would monitor so that way it would back them up or help to turn over bad calls. Umps then have an avenue to correct mistakes which would lighten tensions between them and teams. If a ump then in a game ejects anyone the ejection is reviewed and the fine for the misconduct goes to the party found in the wrong, so ump, player, manager, everyone, etc.
@pancakification3610
@pancakification3610 Жыл бұрын
This would also prevent against a ump just pointing in a dugout and ejecting someone when they don't know who is chirping at them. We have seen too many wrongful ejections of people who weren't even talking to the ump in the first place.

iirc, MLB cannot announce discipline against umpires per the collective bargaining agreement with the umpires union. that lack of transparency makes for extra-bad optics when umps act like jackasses. when players act like jackasses, their punishments are made public. iunno. obviously making everything public would be better imo. but MLB has the two most powerful unions in sports, and unions, for all the good they do, can also be a major impediment, particularly in sports (as opposed to more mundane occupations).

I have a comment about the end of your video. You mentioned the fly ball and no damage. I think an overlooked stat in baseball is turning an order over. Because of the extra baserunning given, damage is done by the pitcher throwing more pitches and the potential for the batting order to turn over quicker and maybe more often. I know what you meant by no runs scoring equating to no damage, but I also wanted to point this out.

One of the reasons I absolutely love baseball is the story within the story within the story that's happening below the surface. Not only the fact that the coach used up a mound visit to throw shade at the umpire to his pitcher, but the fact that the umpire _also_ knew that's what he was doing-and it's all hidden in plain site. On it's face the game can appear boring but if you know some of the subtleties, you're essentially watching a soap opera with bats and balls.

It caught me off guard when he went out right away. I mean for sure Walked is looking to get ejected, but its 30 seconds. I don't if ump was really nervous because he has to throw out a coach and was rattled. Manoah had a tough outing but for sure the call in first to help SD get 2 runs was just inexcusably bad.

Really, ejecting via eavesdropping now? This ump went looking for an ejection from a private conversation, then escalated into forcing contact just to add a fine out of spite. Unprofessional and disgraceful behavior. Edit: I understand the coach likely intended for the ump to hear, but ejecting based on some comments about bad calls is ridiculous, especially when we can easily verify that the calls were bad.

100% Pete Walker went out there with the intention of getting ejected. Since we can't see what he said (which must be heartbreaking for the Jomboy lip-reading masters), I look at the absolute ZERO reaction from the players when the ump tossed him. They knew exactly what was up. Walker too IMMEDIATELY turned to give it to the ump, not showing even the slightest hint of surprise. He barely even broke up what he was saying. So, my guess is that Walker was FACING Manoah, but he wasn't talking ABOUT the umpire like Jomboy speculates here; he was talking TO the umpire while facing the players.

Umpire needs to be suspended or sent down. Visit to the pitcher's mound is not his business until that 30 seconds is up. And he was all out to have some kind of physical confrontation afterward. That is NOT what he is there for.
