Subscribe! Male Red Bellied Woodpecker joins the Blue Jay Family in the fight for morning peanuts. Presented in real-time it takes about 50 seconds from the time I open the door until the peanuts are gone! Listen for the blue jays imitating a Red Shouldered Hawk call as intimidation to keep squirrels and other birds away while the Jay strike force hits the peanuts.

In all my years as a bird watcher (and feeder), one thing I've learned...Blue Jays absolutely LOVE peanuts! We used to buy one of those gigantic 40 pound bags of peanuts and they watched us unload the bag every time, screeching like crazy! I also learned that you should never feed them roasted peanuts either...it's best to give them the raw kind.
@moraloeval851

Why can’t you give them the roasted kind..?
@VideoSaySo
@VideoSaySo 2 жыл бұрын
@@moraloeval851 Actually two reasons: Sometimes places will put that powdered salt on them after they're roasted. Like they do sunflower seeds. That's really bad for them, but they can also make them choke if they're not raw. I'm not sure why,

Whenever I see a lot of blue jays together, it seems like there's always one red-bellied woodpecker hanging out near them. Maybe because the jays provide good cover from predators, and the woodpecker can actually hold his own around bullying jays.

Could also be that Blue Jays cache their bits of food and maybe the Red Bellied Woodpeckers are onto that game and steal from the Blue Jays' caches. I have seen squirrels and Blue Jays steal each others' caches for what it's worth...

You are onto something! I have between 25-40 Jays at once when I throw peanuts. Last 5 days, a woodpecker has been showing up. @Dana William Agree. The Blue Jays I see at my feeders always flee from other birds. I've seen Cardinals run them off. Doves run everything off, though. Even the Red Bellied Woodpecker doesn't tangle with Doves for some reason.
@brigidtheirish
@brigidtheirish 3 жыл бұрын
@@paulburns4721 Huh. The blue jays I've seen are the ones doing the bullying. Then again, there aren't many birds their size or larger around here. We've got woodpeckers and mourning doves, but they usually show up at different times or just aren't that interested in where the jays hang out. Well, that's not entirely correct. Grackles will run off *everything.*

Update; Recently added a small, plastic porch table to the feeding area, and split the peanuts between that and the basket. With one crow, at least three jays and around seven magpies, it’s gotten the birds to stop being aggressive over who’s turn it is to take food. They also all really love plain cooked eggs, which I encourage you to try.

That's because blue jays are corvids morphed into a songbird. And like all corvids, their natural aggression is informed by their high intelligence. I'm glad the woodpecker held his own. We have both woodpeckers and jays where we are and the jays are such bullies. They used to taunt a housecat I had!

Blue Jays around my house terrorize the poor cardinals but the little mockingbirds keep everyone in check. Including my dog and the local redtail hawk.

Blue Jays are highly, highly intelligent birds. I actually play a form of fetch with some. These little fellas communicate with me. They'll chirp when it's time to throw the nut. If I don't break the shell, they drop it and fly on branch above me a chirp until I throw one. They're priceless. They sound like a rusty clothline.

I see them in the trees all the time in flocks. They just sit there. And then they fly around, and then they land back at the same spot there were before. They're thinking birds.

Yup. My woodpecker does the same thing when I feed them peanuts. Those blue Jays are greedy lol I've seen them take in two peanuts. One down their throats and the other carried by beaks.

They are different in every way. They're both birds with a tufted crest, other than that, they resemble each other not at all.

Blue jays are in the family Corvidae, not Cardinalidae. But there is a blue clade in the cardinal family that includes the blue grosbeak, blue seedeater, and others.
