Hi Michael, when you hear any distortion in Rudy Van Gelder recordings, it's because he was known for recording as "hot" as he could, that way he got his sound, but since he was mixing in the spot (while recording), sometimes if the musician played louder or closer to the mic, we got a little distorsion. I'm getting the Sonny Clark this week, can't wait!

As a jazz fan, it's wonderful to see the positive response these Blue Note releases are getting. 10 years ago, I was concerned that the remaining interest in jazz was waining, but it's so nice to see a concentrated resurgence in interest in some of the greatest music ever made. Waiting for my copy, but this Sonny Clark release is just too good and star-filled to pass on... thank you to Michael for being our VC emissary for these fantastic releases.

Michael awesome review Sonny Clark piano playing is so rhythmic and melodic . Donald Byrd trumpet playing to me is so over the top never heard Byrd follow so excellent man this album should of been released during the 60s it’s amazing . Essential Tone poet in my book. Lovellandrew

What a wonderful album. I REALLY hope they release the 3 bonus tracks with Kenny Burrell someday, either as “Sonny Clark Quintets” as intended, or as “Cool Struttin’ Vol 2” as it was in Japan. As happy as I am to have this on vinyl, it’s hard to listen to the album without those three incredible tracks now. Maybe a RSD release idea for Blue Note?!

hello Michael !! Greetings from Potugal ... 1st of all let me say that i love your vids, the passionate way that you talk about vinyl ... and music ... it's really "catchy" i cant stop watch it ... i've learnt a lot watching your videos ... thanks for "oppening" my music taste for (to me) new artists, and sounds, but specially for giving me hints to choose the "right" 1st choices in so many iconic artists that i've always wasnt sure with wich "albuns" to start adding to my vinyl colletion ... For that tips .. and "orientation" ... i'm so so so thankful to you ... Thanks (Obrigado) ... in your videos i got to know the Vinyl Storage Solutions from your suggestions ... i got my 1st order as i saw it in your vid ... i bought ... 4mil double pocket double flap + 4mil double pocket with (resealabe) ... that said ... i've been watching your vids and i realised that with non gatefold LP's you tend to put the vinyl oppening on the side, and not on the top of the "double pocket sleeves", you insert the ninyl horizontaly, is that so ? ... ... i am doing it too ... ... cause i think that this is makes the vinyl spine (and the pressed title") more clear and readable) ... do you prefer using it this way too ? ... now that i'm planning to do a my 2nd order from VSS ... i'm trying to figure out what choices are better to me ... if i keep the vinyl openning from the side, i'de better choose more of the one flap only (tukable or resealable) ... if i rather use it the opening from the top ... it would be better to choose "double tuckuble flap" ... i dont know what to do .... lol ... ... i bet i'll be ordering both ... aahahah ;) Once again Thanks for sharing you passion and knowlege for music its been a great company and a great form of learning to me thanks once again Rui from Portugal

I wonder what people expect from a 1959 recording, I hope that it is not the squashed, compressed and ruined sound that we get from many of today’s recordings, it’s great hearing the music as it was played, I can live with the pseudo stereo I find it engaging as one member of ‘the band’ does their solo. You have me listening to music that I would never have considered before, thanks for getting me hooked on this great jazz sound.

I thought "ping pong" means the sound goes back and forth between left and right, like a ping pong delay effect for guitar. I would call this "hard panned".

Has the Chet Sings been repressed? Also yes, for some reason a lot of Byrd recordings from Blue Note distort because of mic overloading. Its not too uncommon either, Byrd in Flight has a lot of it. Not sure what you mean by the skating effect however. IGD is mainly due to a decrease in rotation speed.

The Japanese releases were in stereo and the only other US release (on CD with bonus tracks) was mono.

Great update. Is there any way you could talk your bestie Chad into reissuing audiophile releases of the Fall, Kraftwerk, Autechre, Bauhaus, Throbbing Gristle, Zoviet France, Can, Radiohead, and Boards of Canada??? UHQR's of Bend Sinister, OK Computer, Eostre and Incunabula would be exquisite but I realize that is a stretch! You are the only one who could do this! If not, would you consider starting a Europe based audiophile reissue label to accomplish this spectacular mission?

I think as long as Blue Note titles have strong interest, they will appreciate. But, I think it will be a couple of years before we see a Tone Poet release with a FMV over a $100. It will also depend how long they will stay in print.
