Some corrections courtesy of the civil engineer I showed this to: Volcanic ash (and actually it was pumice) doesn’t increase strength, it decreases weight Leaving a hole at the top of a dome actually makes it easier to build Arched domes are also easier to build
@Sandshrew2824 жыл бұрын
@Rick K As a Materials Science engineer: If there's a hole, the ring has to hold itself up, but it's supported by the rest of the dome pushing up and "in" on it. The ring is held up by the vertical force, and just has to resist the compressive force tangential to the circumference of the ring to avoid crumbling. If there's stuff in the middle, then you have a "cap" that's only held in place by the rest of the dome pushing in on it. Gravity pulls down on the cap, causing it to be under shear or bending stress, eventually pulling itself apart under its own weight (this is why the decreased weight was important). The only 'upward force' on that section is due to the material's inherent shear strength, which in the case of concrete without iron rebar is... not great (rebar was invented 1200 years after the Pantheon was built). The reason the hole works and the cap doesn't is that concrete's compressive strength is WAAAY better than its tensile/shear/bending strength. If you're interested in the subject there's a chapter on concrete in "Stuff Matters" by Mark Miodownik, which also has a lot of other fun materials science stuff!

@@nadiaparamita101 Sorry! The the wikipedia article is in spanish only (I'll make an english version as soon as I can!). I'll try to tell you the story as best as I can remember. Essentially, this guy called Refugio Reyes Riva started as a mason for some construction work just after finishing the education which was available at the time. Not really that much; learning to read and write with a bit of latin. His "architectural" work began by restoring older temples and some works at hotels. Because of a recent war Mexico had had with france, the barroque style was all the rage at the time. His top work was the Temple of san Antonio which (supposedly) he designed on his own. While the construction was going on, he was criticised by being called "architect without degree" to which he would answer "degree without architect". The temple had a dome which was held up by beams throughout the construction. It is said that everyone proclaimed the dome would collapse as soon as the support was taken off, to the point that the architect made sure to do so on the last day so that everyone could watch it. The beams were removed and the dome stood. There after, he was recognized by the community so much so that he got a post mortem degree years later. There are some nice pictures of the structure on the spanish wikipedia page [Templo_de_San_Antonio_(Aguascalientes)] if you want to check it out.

Fact 1: the designer of the dome in Florence used vegetables which he carved into the shape of bricks to demonstrate to the brick makers the uniquely shaped bricks he wanted. Fact 2: when interviewed for the commission to design the dome he won by simply challenging the other architects to stand an egg upright so that it was stable and required no external support. When they had all tried and failed he completed the task himself in a matter of seconds.

The Pantheon sunshine bit is pretty simple geometry (especially compared to the rest of, you know, Rome): you just have to find the angle of the sun at whatever time(s) on whatever day(s) you want, which you can do by looking at it at that time on that day, then orienting your building (direction and height) so the right important bits are on the opposite side at that/those time(s). Meticulous planning, sure (as Rome does), but not a very difficult concept.

You don't have to do that, but that remix might just cure depression. Your call

There's a small, but very interesting, ogival dome here in the province of Córdoba, Argentina, called "la capilla Buffo" (the Buffo chapel). Buffo was an architect who built this chapel in honour of his dead wife and daughter (not the same woman, I feel the need to clarify after watching your Ptolemies podcast). Anyway, it's pretty crazy with a pendulum that predicts eartquakes, and light falling on the ladies' portraits on the anniversaries of their deaths and lots of details and symbols and whatnot

I know this isn't related to this video but can Red cover the Anti-hero trope or secondary protagonist trope over at Trope Talk?

I could've sworn she covered that already. I'm gonna have to check and subsequently listen to a lot of her Trope Talks all over again.

Another cool thing about the Roman Pantheon! It doesn't rain inside!! That giant hole in the roof has just the right amount of air flow going through it so the rain doesn't get in, except a few sprinkles now and again. I went to Rome a few years ago and we were actually there while it was sprinkling, and the Pantheon was completely dry :)

I was at a Mass in the Pantheon while it was raining. They put a rope around the area directly below the oculus but it was raining so heavily the water went past the barrier by a meter or two.

i showed my mom your video on medieval span & al-andalus, and then i casually mentioned how big a fan you were of domes. she asked me which was your favorite, and since i didn't know, i looked it up - then i realized you'd already made a video on it, which i'd never gotten around to watching, so we watched that too! mom's favorite is the pantheon, but she agrees that the others are pretty great as well.
