what is the best way to go about learning this for someone who has moderate but not good skill in fingerpicking?

You may omit the intro, bridge, and outro parts. For the verse and chorus parts, just play the melody notes and bass notes for each chord.

practice segment by segment, and buy yourself a nylon guiar. It is easier on the fingers, so you'll practice more without pain. Nylon guitar that isn't as wide as regular one (47-48mm). Ortega has nice ones.
