This video shows how I fertilize my Blueberry bushes going into Fall with the best blueberry bush fertilizer I have ever used. 50% peat moss, 25% mini pine bark nuggets and 25% compost mixed with a 1/4 cup of cottonseed meal having a NPK of 6-1-1. Prepping for Spring blueberry harvest. Happy gardening.

First I'd like to say "thank you" I've come across lots of educational videos that really do an excellent job in teaching, but lack the fun in watching. What I mean is you put a little something extra when you educate us and that's the sound of your voice. It's soft, relaxed and pleasantly easy to listen to. Well done my friend. I think I stumbled onto the right channel. 🙏👏

You’re a great teacher and I’m so excited about learning about blueberry bushes. I bought four new blueberry bushes and planted them just last week for overwintering. They’ll go in the bigger rounds like yours in spring, and now I know what to do this spring. I can’t find the mini pine bark in my area, had to go with pine bark. Not sure where to source the mini at. Excellent content.
@growingoutthebox
@growingoutthebox 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the message. If at all possible I would up pot to the correct size planter before spring. Fall planting allows for the bushes to establish roots and vernalization. Spring, your bush should be focused on developing fruit not roots. 1 or the other. It’s kinda like trying to give birth after surgery. Yes, it can be done but you lessen risk when healthiest.

May I ask where you get your mini pine bark nuggets or what brand you use. I’ve had a hard time finding them. Thank you so much for all the great information!!!

Being in the north I have to bring my bushes in during the cold weather. Guessing one is about a year and two are 6 mths. (Different types) Got them in May. There in a 12" bucket now but gonna increase the size in the spring. The older one is 1.5-2' tall nice and bushy. The other 2 are about a foot tall. Putting a grow light on them while in the house for sunlight.

What grow zone are you in. Your bush needs a certain amount of chill hours to produce berries so it needs the cold for vernalization.

Fall is the best time to plant or relocate blueberries. With Southern Highbush which I have they grow 4 to 6 ft tall and wide so I would do a minimum of 4 to 6 ft apart from bush center crown to the other. I hope that helps.

What if you wanted to plant a dwarf blueberry tree in a container can you still use the cotton seed meal? What kind of mulch and soil should I use? I think I’m in zone 9a or 9b.

I use this same mix on all my blueberry bushes. As soon as they root, I move them into containers for some times a year and half until they are ready to go into the garden. Same mix and fertilizer.

So your type of measurement is these buckets that you have your pine bowl mulch in and your sphagnum moss correct?
@growingoutthebox
@growingoutthebox 3 ай бұрын
In a word.... "Yes". I reach the people where they are at and not try to over explain. Of all the comments thus far I have yet to have 1 question about measurements. "I'm not even sure this is a question" I have over 120K here on KZbin, 314K on IG, 91K Facebook and 55K TikTok. If I could, I would answer every single message and try to translate the reply so that each individual will feel that I personally replied in a way that caters to their needs.

Have you ever had problems with ants? In my area pine needles/bark harbor ants. Does it make a difference if you use cedar nuggets instead of the pine?
@growingoutthebox

Personally I don’t use cedar wood chips or shavings. It’s been known to cause liver damage to some animals when used as bedding. Look up thujone in cedar. Cedar can also help acidify the soil.

I’m afraid not to the point of where it would have any effect on soil acidity . Because they decompose slowly the soil microbes will neutralize their acidity.

how big of bush should I buy to plant ? I was just debating this question at Lowe’s . I am near Knoxville tn zone 7 . I also want to plant figs and what size should I buy ? I would love to know to know what blueberries 🫐 are best for cross pollination?

Question. It is time to fertilize my blueberries now but I have 2 plants with a ph of about 3 and 3.8 is there any advice for fixing the ph of the soil since I'm not sure if it will effect the plant going into the winter? I ask since I wanted to use the cottonseed meal but I know this method helps in keeping the soil acidic.
@growingoutthebox
@growingoutthebox 3 ай бұрын
Wow! Where do you live with a pH that low? The perfect range is 4.5 to 5.5 but blueberries can tolerate a 3.8 if the soil has a high organic matter. Just add more compost and you should be good.

I forgot to mention that I had 4 other blueberry plants I had struggled to keep a pH under 6 with plenty of soil acidifier, peat moss, and pine bark nuggets. With the 2 plants in the first comment (separate plants) I used peat moss, pine bark nuggets, compost, azalea soil mix and soil acidifier hoping that the soil would get under a 6. @@growingoutthebox should I buy something to try and lower the soil or should I just go ahead and use Berry tone compost and pine bark nuggets? These 2 blueberry plants are mature bushes but nothing close to your size of bushes. All 6 blueberry plants are in large containers. @@rgcisuisorisuaint if the bush has been in for a few years I’m sure it’s in need of pruning. For me it’s the hardest part because you have to give up some of your potential berries for next season but you will have bigger and better berries. Overcropping is when the bush is producing a lot of berries but they get smaller and smaller each year. Time to prune 😩
