The triple A studios brought this on themselves. Having games need WiFi to be played, increased prices, and restricting where the game can be bought just means lower class families can’t buy your game due to the amount of time they need to work to earn that while also leaving other countries unable to buy those games.

Kinda? AAA game companies aren't rushing to replace workers with AI like he's making out here. That's not what Embracer announced. What they are doing is working to incorporate it into pipelines. @zoeherriot
@zoeherriot Ай бұрын
@@Isaak-eo6tr this is a world that’s a long way off - not like what was implied in the video which is it’s happening now - it’s not. As for soulless games - hard disagree - there are more soulless games now than ten years ago, but it’s not like everything is soullless. I think the games industry needs to reduce scope and back smaller scale projects though. The current state of games is a function of cost. What BD doesn’t understand here is that his game only has to support himself. When you are a publisher you are supporting the many cancelled and failed games in your portfolio. So each successful game doesn’t just cover its costs, but it also covers the costs of a half dozen other failed games. And that is why games are getting “safer”. It’s not that we can’t make good games - (we do) - it’s just that new fresh titles are a massive financial risk. And we need to find a way to reduce that risk. AI could help one day… but it’s not even close to being a solution today.
@zoeherriot
@zoeherriot Ай бұрын
@@Isaak-eo6tr I also want to stress - you guys lump game devs in with publishers - they aren’t the same thing. Game devs do not want to make soulless games. But publishers have a financial interest in making less risky games. When you work at an EA studio, you may have 200, 300 people around you that love games as much as you. But the studio doesn’t hold the money, and it’s not part of the publishing arm of EA. They also don’t pay for the marketing - so they are somewhat at the whim of what marketing says will sell. When you work in an EA studio it is entirely possible you will never meet the suits that greenlight or deny your game (or fire you). Game devs do NOT set out to make a boring, soulless game. It just doesn’t happen.

There is no such thing as a mass produced AAA title lol - it's a bunch of devs working their tits off for years and everytime is a new harrowing experience. This whole AI thing is completely out of context and no one is using AI significantly in their AAA pipelines. Including any of the embracer studios. If you mean generic title - sure - there has definitely been a trend towards safer titles - but that's simply because the cost of making a AAA title is so high now that the risk of new IP is unfortunately very high. 5:50 that is basically how shares in general work. People or other entities buy shares of companies that they have no idea or even interest in knowing what their product is. And I mean that is okay. You invest your money in a company with the expectation to get more money back at some point in the future. What I hate about "pleasing the shareholders" though is companies usually alienate their own employees with that strategy, which lowers morale and worst case also alienate customers when they feel the quality dropping and the prices rising.

It’s so they don’t have to pay large legacy retirement benefits, because they just fired their long term employees. They’re not worried about the possible loss of their talented workers, and they think they can get by with the buyer paying the same or more expensive price for a subpar product. This really got started back in the early to middle eighties. Oh and by the way, we were already starting to use the first A.I. programs that we were creating in house. Granted we didn’t have the newest software enhancements, but we are definitely getting better A.I. almost monthly, and frankly I don’t see this changing as long as they feel they can use the cheapest labor from countries that do not pay livable wage.

Pick a language that's used extensively in industry but particularly one that runs on desktop. I say stay away from stuff like javascript and that web stuff in the beginning unless you want that to be your discipline. C and C++ is kind of annoying to start with because of the way other people's code is going to be imported into your project and you will very often be using others' libraries in any language. But on the other hand, Using C and C++ gives you a better fundamental understanding of how your computer works in my opinion. If you don't want to risk overwhelming yourself from the start and get discouraged, then Java or C# are better bets. Pretty easy to get going fast with these. Python is even faster to start with and I do also recommend that as it's pretty user friendly but I don't like the syntax personally.I feel it doesn't allow you to get as close to the bits and bytes and the hardware itself as lower level languages like C and C++ where you can actually write assembly language( which you may never have to ever use) from within them and allocate memory. Python also works a little differently under the hood than the other ones I listed and is a bit less efficient. Email me at modemflicker@gmail if you have further questions.

I don't tend to pirate because it's a hassle, though I appreciate it when abandonware or freeware games are reposted on the internet (old Need for Speed games and 2005 AREA 51 respectively as examples). That being said, whenever I buy videogames I typically buy them at extreme sales, and I've made quite a nice list of games over the years that way. Everyone: know that not only do these companies not need your money at all and don't deserve it (save for hardworking developers), but they also want to take away your videogames if they can. Do not give them your support. They are the shady guy who sells half-broken items at that weird alleyway.

Honestly at this point the only 2 triple A companies that can still release a game that is actually worht 80 bucks are Rockstar and Valve. Can't think of any other.

I said this 10 years ago....that we would be creeping up on 100 bucks for a standard game in the future. If u charging me 70....imma need all the content to be in the game. No stupid season passes, no stupid 125 dollar editions with content that cannot be acquired by just playing the game. Especially in a competitive game....

AI can be really good for things like lip sync, animation interpolation, just small things that are boring and automatable. I wouldn't entrust AI with art or game design aspects at all.

it's pretty sad nowadays, but this is reality. Most people don't understand what is AI or what's behind the scenes, and they are easily exploited to drain off the money. This going to be another case for exploiting consumers by telling lies

1000+ people? Assuming they were being paid a low average of 40kUSD (some would get more, some less), that's a staffing overhead of over $40,000,000. Is that sustainable? I would question the need for such a huge staff in the first place

I really think it's a good thing that you're distinguishing from the ethical uses of AI and the unethical uses of AI... Also 100%, the FSF needs to back certain open source AI projects. 100% needs to happen... The issue is that the GPL does not make money.

people are gonna pirate games if they cant afforded it at a reasonable price ( 60 usd was not reasonable ) and if the game is not available to to corpo slums not selling it anymore people are gonna pirate it. i remember when AAA games for the ps2 and xbox where 50 bucks and bargin titles where 20. back when the ps1 was king games where all 40 bucks new. mario 64 new was almost 200 bucks at walmart. in 1996..no wonder why the ps1 dominated the n64. could get more games for a 3rd of the price. also as gabe newell said "We think there is a fundamental misconception about piracy. Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem" and with how games are being priced now 70 usd that quote wont hold up anymore

As we know about GTA definitive edition (texture, characters model size)debacle, when there is no or less human involvement, AI cannot create anything from nothing. AI needs the help of humans to assess if the work is good or not

I Only play games and pay for games when I know where that money goes to like in Hoyoverse's Genshin Impact where 1/3 of the profits goes back into Game Development A Large Portion for Marketing, A Large Portion for Charities, etc. pumping new content every 6 weeks. and yes If a Gacha Company Earns ALOT without any Improvements. that's a big No for me. I'm also okay with slow development so long as the game is a one time purchase only. i'm also okay with DLCs as long as they are priced fairly. Forgot to say I love the video.

Big agree on multiple points in this video. Corporate greed is bs but i can see how indie game devs, small self funded amateur animation studios etc potentially can benefit from AI as well. Maybe not yet but in near future i can see 4 people being capalble to show their stories in acceptable product. Scary thougt how animation corporations react tho... especially japanese animators are overworked and underpaid (and i believe this is true elsewhere as well)... i wonder if they let people go and the rest are still overworked since they have to now supervise multiple AIs that are doing work of people who were fired.

I remember when games came how they were and if there were issues that was just par for the course. They came on large cartridges, and you couldn't save either, so if you lost all your chances you had to start over from the beginning. Fun times, eh? And they cost $60 back then. And that's all you got. No updates, no DLC, and if the game sucked you were just stuck with it.

I guarantee you the more AI is used to make a game the worst public perception will be. AI creates uncanny valley and that is its primary output. Uncanny value in workmanship creates work that humans don't like, period. I agree with your general take.

I think your game has potential but the main problem with it (IMO) is that movement has no weight at all. when you move it feels like you are running on ice. if that would be fix that would make the game 100 times better. it could be a good contestant vs squad.

The irony about corporations trying to replace people with AI is that they soon find themselves in need for people with technical expertise in AI--which means having to hire *more* people especially if they want AI tools that are unique to them. And these corporations should know that AI actually use a lot of computing power, so they will find themselves having processes bottlenecked. Sure, cloud computing is a thing but there is still an upper limit (and you need to pay for those), so eventually they will find themselves needing people to manage those things. Yes, "artificial intelligence" (which is an umbrella term) will make *certain* tasks more efficient, but they will still need human beings who know what they're doing to make sure things are done the way that it needs to be done. Yeah, I predict that this sort of dick move (I can use more crude language but I choose not to) will be the beginning of an end of these corpos. So what has been said is correct: this is all an opportunity for a cash grab, not to improve anything. The Industrial Revolution actually improved lives by both reducing the need for labor and also making things at scale at lower costs per item (economies of scale) all while creating new jobs and opportunities (and yes, at the expense certain types of work. The Luddites protested against large machines taking away their jobs of weaving textile together, the first documented instance of people losing their jobs to a form of automation. However, certain jobs cannot be automated so certain specialists are still needed; industry still employ hundreds to thousands of people to make sure the machines work the way they should, do finishing or starting work that cannot be done by machines like things requiring fine dexterity, and quality control). What our favorite nameless corporations are doing is definitely not "revolutionizing" anything and it's just a bunch of idiot, tech-illiterate execs with no background in software or computer science who read an article in Popular Science or Business Insider one day wanting to make more money without putting more effort. And what can we do? Have a better understanding of how AI (stuff like machine learning, deep learning, etc.) and there are plenty of *free* resources available (though many would require some understanding of high level education math; the mathematical basis of AI includes linear algebra and partial differential calculus, though you can learn AI without needing a mastery of the math), and then know how to apply it. Get your artist friends on board (I'm sure there are many who are against this AI thing) so that they are more empowered with the technology and as a tool for creation, and this would prove to everybody that AI can't replace people (because whatever AI "creates" can be equated to the product of a fever dream; having actual artists with creative control will make sure resources are used more efficiently) if you want a good product for cheaper.
