I recently had someone reach out to me out of the blue to make their character for them. This was the first time I had ever been given this opportunity, and it was pretty stressful (it was being paid for). I'm not even close to being a professional, but I can definitely say, based on this video, you should accept any opportunity you get to make something for someone else. This first time experience allowed me to be very cautious with the decisions I made for the art, and it turned out looking okay.

Art education potential is really misunderstood amongst the majority of the society and that alone makes me sad
@danielquintana6045
@danielquintana6045 4 жыл бұрын
The problem at least from personal experience is that I see a lot of my classmates at university that go for art education tend to be the least hardworking ones. They kinda just pick it because its "easier "and they tend to be the ones to have weaker knowledge of the fundamentals and skill(cus they don't practice). Which saddens me because I think to myself, really? this is the level that middle/high school student will get as professors. I personally considered art education as a career path but I am not good with kids nor have patience. This definitively does not apply everywhere just speaking from my personal experience. I have a lot of respect for art teachers and there are a lot out there that take their profession seriously and care for the artistic development of their students.

I before covid couldnt draw for shit legit my people legit were barely people.... spent no time practicing (partly cuz i didnt know what to practice) but started putting like 30-50 hours a week into drawing.... for the last 6 months.... now my people are certainly not as good as a professional but there is now clear anatomy the faces dont look like the people are missing chromosomes and I feel so much better about myself.... but FR artschool was a lie its not what gets you the job your work is what gets you the job and if you dont put in the time your not gonna get any of the benefits

Im 65. When I was young & in school, my father said "there is no money in art, study to do a 'real' job". I was not allowed to take "the frivolous expense" of art classes in school. Now, after many years of job hopping (because I was never happy in my jobs) & I've finished raising my kids, I get to do me. Am not sure where to start as digital did not exist back then, but I plan to give it one heck of a try. If I make some pocket change to supplement my retirement income, yay for me. In short, dont waste time by waiting or giving up. Pursue your dream. Good luck.

Haha I’m almost 21 and thought I was late to the game. But your comment and everyone else’s really helped show me that’s just the anxiety talking. At the end of the day, it’s better just to start (at any age or point in time) rather than never starting at all. If this is what you want to do (even if it’s just a hobby like you mentioned or whether you want a solid job in it) just start now (like you said with the basics). If you’re consistent with it just sketching everyday or doing finished pieces everyday, soon enough you’ll be ready for something serious. There is always a market for people who want your art or who like your style. You just have to put yourself out there and go for it. We believe in you!! Much love and support!!

Something else of note when working freelance - there will always be flakes; there will always be someone who praises your work, says you're perfect for their project, and then they disappear from the face of the Earth once you talk price. They won't be the last, so get used to it. I've been there, and I'm sure every illustrator has as well. Don't sweat it, and don't let it deter you from pursuing your passion. For every flake that vanishes in the wind, there's another client around the bend who means business, and for every legit client you complete work for, you have another stone paved on your path towards being an illustrator.

Hey so something about medical illustration that you didnt mention: you have to have graduated from a credited medical illustration course at a university to get work in that field all with very small class sizes that people come from all over the world to attend. There was, last I checked, about 12 of these courses in North America all with small class sizes. To quality for these courses you'll need prerequisites such as university Physiology 101 and Biology 101. It is EXTREMELY rare for a person from a purely artistic background to become a medical illustrator, usually its taken up by med students. This is all information that I got from a meeting with the University of Toronto's medical illustration head about ten years ago so some of it may be misremembered or outdated.

Try harder. Work on your skills. ;) And Importent: Have Luck. There a so many People out there who wanna draw for a living, so find your niche. Maybe your set of goal is to high?(right now) Being hired by a company is for most of us just a dream. But being hired as freelancer is more likely or look for another Job option, you havent considered yet. Maybe working in a normal Design inviroment- they will notice that you are a good illustrator (If you are) and so you might have mostly "Design Jobs" but also "Illustration" Jobs. (Its a plus when they don´t have to hire someone.) I never had a single contrakt with "Illustrator" on it, but I created comics and mascots, painted murals for shops and fair stands, and did even coverart and Illustration for books. It just do not came as jobtitel. If all fails ask yourself if you actually want to do that for a living or just for your heart.

Or try it differently if it's something you would really be interested in doing. I find working with people very stressful, in fact, that's one of the reasons why I'm trying to work with art instead of looking for any other job (which is were I failed for almost 10 years). I can't find anything "peopleless" or stress free so I'm trying to discover what works for me while freelancing right now, and all seems very dependent or good marketing and algorithms that I'm trying to use in my favor...

Posting on social media every day does not mean posting complete illustrations every day. They can just be WIPs, less complex drawings, or even studies, doodles, or concept art. Pretty much anything as long as it’s art-related. Posting art every day on social media is not so much for fishing for potential jobs and clients (that’s what the portfolio is for), but more for raising your engagement and reach so that the algorithm favors you and shows your art to more people. The more people see your art, the more followers you get, and more followers mean that more people know who you are and you will end up getting more traffic to your portfolio, website, commission info, etc.

Doesn't need to be a polished painting! Look at my IG I post mostly studies and quick sketches and only once in a while I might drop a bigger painting or the steps leading to the finished painting. Just gotta figure out a way to break up your progress in clear steps you can post about. (my last drawing coloring tutorial kzbin.info/www/bejne/jafRmGOlhdCBr5Y breaks the process with this exact thing in mind!) If you don't post every day - like every other day for example - your account will still grow but it's like 25% as effective, exactly like what I'm experiencing now since I haven't been posting as regularly in October! I've had many of these cycles and it's always the same. The difference posting every day makes is crazy.

Love all your videos and content. Always a pleasure to watch through them and learn. (Kinda a broad statement, but you cover so much information. LOL!) P.S. I would love to see a video of the fundementals of "what makes a good illustration; storytelling, single/group characters, what to think about and setup. " (Looking through your videos to see if this already exists.) Thanks for your content!

Incredibly informative, and surprisingly encouraging even though I feel challenged as well. I owe youtube illustrators like you and others a lot, you showed me that a career as an illustrator is actually very possible if you know what steps you need to take. Also I need to revamp my portfolio 😹 thanks for the reminder.

You know, i had a shitty day today because of my coworker from a job that I don’t even like. I gave up trying to work as an illustrator because I got rejected a lot trying to find a job in this field. Your video got me motivated again, and I’m considering to even join your artschool. I really don’t want to die one day regretting that I die along with my dream, so hopefully your videos can help me get better and motivated as an artist so I could just quit my job and do my dream job. Thank you very much for the videos. Definitely gonna subscribe 😄

I’ve always wanted to be a concept artist or an illustrator BUT then I went to a precollege program then I started to think that it wasn’t for me, but I wasn’t sure so I applied to schools anyway, then I got in and now I’m fully sure that this isn’t the career that was meant for me, I mean I like drawing and art but not enough where I have to draw a few hours a day , I like it more as a hobby rather then I full on career

If you need to relocate, do the company helps you in anyway? Does it depend on the company? What are some credentials they look for in your resume? Or should I just worrying with having a good portfolio? I just started, I'm working taking commissions for now, my old pc doesn't handle photoshop so I only use firealpaca at the moment, I don't have any credentials I could put in a website like artstation or behance other than my drawings, would a company be interested only by looking at my portfolio? Is there anyway I could present myself better to catch a company's interest? Good to know not going to an art school wasn't the end of the world :p Thanks for the great video and channel!

So concept artist are like story board directors from animation who gives a idea about the piece and Illustrators are like animators who brings that idea to life in the most pretty way? I was confused about the illustrators and concept artist but now I think I want to become a concept illustrator or smth like that since I want to bring my concepts to life in the most pretty way

Thank you so much for everything! I've seen your videos for a short time and they have help me so much!! I didn't even knew what I wanted to do in the art field, know I know I want to be an illustrator, I am thinking on joining your school program, if I get the 500 dollars program (is the one that I can afford 🙈) , will I get feed back from you? Thank you so much

Thanks for considering the program Rose! For feedback, that would be the ART School +Feedback option instead :) The content is the same, but the feedback version comes with weekly feedback over a full year.

can you do a video on art style again? I finished a piece recently and was like "why does this look worse than stuff i made a year ago" idk whats happening, i feel like my art is getting worse or something, and i feel like im trying too hard to finish artwork when i could be pumping stuff out that looks clean and nice with a consistent style

about ARTSCHOOL, It's my first year as a college art atudent. The school is darn expensive and it doesn't even tackle fundamentals/basics much but just plain work load of high school-like project making. And I don't think I could last there for four more years. I'm planning on stopping college the next school year and attend ARTSCHOOL instead. I guess I kind of wanted assurance that this will be a right choice for my future as an illustrator...

Sorry to hear that, it's so frustrating because it's so common. ART School would definitely help though, that I'm 100% confident about and I'd be honored to count you as one of my students and have you join the crazy gang. The program covers everything you'd need to improve as fast as possible, build a killer portfolio and start earning from your art. It's all I wish I personally had back when I was just starting, but didn't exist then. (If anything you're lucky to be realizing the program you're in currently isn't for you, better now than 3-4 years into it!) Don't hesitate if you have any other questions about it!
