Might as well throw down a few tips I’ve learned from a pre college course for concept art, 1. To this college, there are 4 aspects: Environments, Architecture/vehicles, characters, and tools/weapons. It may be good to specialize in one of those categories, but maybe not. 2. Do lots of refining. The process the college showed me was references (many, like 4-10), ideation sketches, refinement, and final render. Find some ideas you like, and mash em together in different ways. Then when you find one you like, tinker around with it till you wanna finish it. 3. Other general tips like letting the viewer feel like a participant when it comes to environmental and architectural drawing, rather than someone watching from far away.
@shinkamui2 жыл бұрын
the shapecarver people do a great job at showing how the nitty gritty of ideation goes o/ they do 5 broad variations, then pick one and do 5 more variatons on that specific one, then pick one and do 5 more, sometimes mashing shapes together laterally or from previous drawings. It's a very interesting look at the process
@christiangiardina45412 жыл бұрын
What do you mean "maybe not"? That i should be really good to all of them?

Okay, I literally feel like crying after a sudden moment of realisation. All I ever wanted in life was to be an artist and I've been creating art since I was very little. Instead, I'm stuck in an office all day and SETTLING. Here are some notes, feel free to copy and learn: Definition of a Concept artist and the Distinction between an Illustrator: Concept artist’s convey ideas in their art while Illustrators create their art to be sold. A concept artist must be creative and be able to convey ideas clearly. A concept artist can be terrible at art but good at conveying ideas, and an illustrator could be terrible at conveying ideas but amazing at art. What to expect: You’ll probably have to move to be closer to the studio. You’ll be drawing all day. …ok halfway through writing this I’ve run out of motivation. You guys can add stuff in the replies

Important thing to note is, as an environment concept artist myself, you wouldnt be just drawing all day. A lot of time you will be working as well in 3d and doing a lot of research (which is good fun too) but not just drawing. Sometimes having callouts to photo references which is more efficient than redrawing it. As well for concept art in terms of social media, from my experience and others which have been doing great on art station but it isnt as populair for posting it on regular platforms like instagram since the work isnt catered to general public.

Is 3d software used for making concepts? Or drawing is enough?
@thatoneuser86002 жыл бұрын
It seems more and more concept artists are using 3D software like Blender because they help with lighting, perspective, depth passing, and they're very flexible compared to pure 2D working environment in that you can easily change the camera angle, remove or add objects, etc. So now the concept art process has three main steps: 1. Draw a basic composition sketch to see the form of the work you want to create 2. Implement that sketch in Blender and render it 3. Export render to Photoshop and add final details by photobashing, painting, color grading, etc. Here's a series that illustrates this process in more detail: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6SQoJ-sZdSnobs Here's speedart that shows this process at a faster pace: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b6q7emeoZt-GY9E

Y'know, one thing I realized is that as an artist I'm much more of an illustrator than a concept artist. I always gravitate towards creating big elaborate pieces with a lot of detail and refinement rather than designing things. However... How do you even go about becoming an illustrator... How possible is it to do that. Who would want me? Why would anyone want me? This is kind of why I've been trying to get to doing concept art because it feels more possible, but... I guess that's what I'm trying to figure out now, I have no clue what I should do. It's just, my dream has always been to work as an artist at a game studio in Japan. It's pretty much been my life goal. But getting there as an illustrator is nearly impossible... I suppose I could maybe work as an environment concept artist. It's probably the closest to what I'm good at without being illustration, but I guess I'm still just worried.
@supremenugget54332 жыл бұрын
You have to decide on what you actually want to do, you say that you're more into the illustration side, you can make illustrations that can be used as concept art for certain things,it's all about what you can do and what you can offer to the table, convey ideas through your art, research on job openings lastly, your portfolio matters a lot,do a little bit of everything and decide what what you like to do best take a look at your drawing strengths and weaknesses and improve those weaknesses I hope this helps in some way,take care, don't feel nervous,you got this :) take care stranger :)

Salut Marc! Let me ask you a question, and I hope I'm getting an honest answer from you (or anyone reading this): I'm slightly older than you, in fact I'm in my very late thirties (I'll hit 40 this summer 💀), and I'm learning from your Art School program. Is it too late for me to hope for a job as a character concept artist? I mean, I assume by the time I'll be confident enough with my skill, I'll probably be 44-45 years old, something like that. Would it then not be a little late to get a job as a concept artist? Do companies care for your age at all? (do they hire junior concept artists that are 40+?). I really would like to know, just so I'm not chasing a dream that I might not be able to achieve. Thanks!
@YTartschool2 жыл бұрын
Salut! I understand the age question but it shouldn’t be a concern, if your portfolio matches what the team is looking for that’s all that matters. It’s my experience younger artists don’t get any pass because of their age - you’re either good enough for the job or not. They might be worried about your willingness to do OT though if you have more life responsibilities like a family, that would be the main concern for me.

I like these vids, it always nice to get more insight into the world and industry of art. I personally don't intend to make art a career, but it's still good to know.

Hey Marc! I decided to start pursuing concept art as a career two years ago and you were one of the first artists I found through your Chroma island series. Just wanted to thank you for inspiring me to take the step! I am finishing my master's in concept art and illustration in July and I am so close to making my dream come true after so much work, and a huge part of it was your videos!! On another note, one thing I have noticed is that actually the level of polish people expect from concept art is rising radiply due to having so much competition. So it is true that it's not to the point of illustrators, but I think it's still sooo much more polished than what I had expected at first coming into concept and hearing that for the first time. But I guess that's fair, it's about who is skilled enough to give the most in the smallest amount of time.

My girlfriend wants to become a concept artist but she wants to do it the traditional way. Most companies want their workers to use digital medium, but she wants to be strictly traditional. How can she get her job she wants if she gets turned away by the medium she uses?

Illustrators do traditional meduim though

Honestly Marc, perhaps the best thing to do when you're just starting out is to just pick one particular area to focus on and then build your skills in that area. Better than having to stress yourself out trying to balance learning too many things at once.

Do you feel that going to College for a 4 year course is necessary to get on the starting line? I have no network and no portfolio
@YTartschool9 ай бұрын
Absolutely not, the only schools that won’t completely waste your time will waste your future instead by leaving you under a mountain of debt. To start a portfolio, just start drawing. To network, just join online communities. Most popular artists have Discord servers.
