I would add another point that really works for me 11) FINISH YOUR ART PIECES: don't abandon your projects or work forever on a single one, give them some form of closure, and be consistent, finish your current project before starting another one. If you feel you have a lot of ideas, tackle them one by one, if you are working on a project and you think you have the best idea ever, just make a quick sketch and notes, then return and finish your current project. This forces you to go through all stages of the process. Think about music, if you learn only the intros of songs or the solos you're missing everything else, and play a complete song is as satisfying as finishing an art piece.

I can confirm that having a project rather than a single piece is the best way to produce art. I spent a year trying to find inspiration for personal work and I came up with nothing but then I decided to take on an entire project with about 12 different pieces and once I committed to that the inspiration just flooded in. Artists need direction. Ideas don't just appear out of thin air. We need structure and a idea to work off of.
@mayak59084 жыл бұрын
my problem is i dont know what type of project to start lol but this is very very true
@cordeliathedm4 жыл бұрын
@@mayak5908 I had the exact same problem. I couldn't settle on a subject that I enjoyed enough to create art for. And then I realised I absolutely loved the stories told in The Witcher 3, so I decided to start making Witcher art. I wanted to create cards but just drawing scenes from the game didn't motivate me. So then I was like, what if I use the archetypes from tarot cards and try to draw the characters as those archetypes? And then I got super into it. Maybe start with a subject that inspires you and then come up with a format that gives you the structure you need to stay motivated.

One thing I recently learned and started to use maybe a week or so ago that I wish I knew earlier: If you feel like you can’t draw every single day, which is understandable, have a paper/sketchbook where you draw at least one thing every day. I like to draw just a simple face, maybe at some angle, but just something. It doesn’t even have to be anything specific: maybe just some doodle, weird pattern, it’s up to you! This helps me keep up the motivation to draw

hello, you posted this a year ago so i hope you got better with this but regression and/or stagnation is a normal part of every learning process, sometimes there is moments where you are doing worse than before but it's normal, you reach sort of milestones where progress is slowed down because you already learned a lot of things and the next things to learn are a lot longer to acquire. The more you learn the less porgress are visible.

Man, I'm glad I found your channel. I had 13 year hiatus on drawing just because.. well.. I didn't draw enough to form a habit or routine of doing so. I got first week on relearning, either messing around with stylus or photoshop, doodling something mostly to do small artsy pieces for pals like logos or "fancify" something. All while taking at least every second day to sketch out something more serious. Small or not, I've been sharing it, showin' it aorund. This part I did figure myself But the way Marc speaks, it's kinda inspiring, reinforcing what I know already or atleast I think I know. Used to peptalk art friends by saying "Hey, you're not -there-.... YET" Or like one ancient drawing tutorial once said, "This is not my final form yet"

Beginner-intermediate artist here. I've been drawing for more or less 10 years, but I only started learning art theory and understanding what to do 2 years back. This video helps a lot, and I've even experienced some of these things myself. Thanks a lot for all the great content, Marc. Free tutorials and advice like is a big help to guys like me who can't do a full time art course.

I've been drawing off an on for most of my life. It was only within the last few months that I gave myself a project that I am enthusiastic about that I have been able to not only draw everyday but able to focus on the drawing. I used to struggle to focus on a drawing for 10-15 minutes. I can now focus up to an hour and a half. And I do notice little hints of improvement over the course of this project alone. such as my line control is getting better. I'm better able to discern colors and how to pick colors. And i'm learning the value of layers in art programs.

Hello Marc. I'd like you to make tutorials about painting in comic style in the same way you do, especially like in your digital inktober pieces. I'd be glad if you also put a certain focus on background textures, how to add grit, noise or subdue a bunch of details.

A tip I've found helps is to also look and follow artists whose work is not really your cup of tea, because you look at it more objectively rather than because you like the aesthetic and I think having that balance is important and you'll learn a lot even from art you don't necessarily enjoy. ☺️

Another one is to learn the terms and definitions of the fundamentals and elements of art. If you have a hard time understanding and breaking down how artist created their piece. You're going to have a even harder time trying to recreate or even copy. So learn the basics and create a mindset of constant growth and learning. Because whatever stagnates dies so keep moving and keep working.

At 5:49 same, i also get motivated looking at someone’s art that’s really really good, it gets me in the mood of “wow I really should start practicing to get into this level faster” What discourages me is when i see another bad art bc it kinda gives of fear like if i don’t practice already, that’s how bad I’m gonna get and that just sucks..

I hope i could achieve your level of skill as in you're able to lineart straight away without rough sketches, how strong it is your imagination is in mind. I'm so grateful to stumble upon your channel, thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights.

Thank you, Mr. Brunet. I'm quite thankful that I came across this video as I was trying to find that spark to help reignite my creative drive. It was your comment about burnout and art not being fun was the driving moment that made me realize where I was in my art. As it is with the quarantines and social distancing, I made the decision to reinvest back into my art again and this video brought a refreshing breath of life again to my longest love, art. Best wishes and I look forward to gleaning more insight from your videos.

Actually, I’m always more open to do something when it’s an assignment, like, I need to feel like there is a real need for it to be done, then I will put hours of work but when it’s something else, I just kinda forget.

This video should be seen by ANY SINGLE artist because these are simple yet totally true steps! Thank you Marc for this morning motivation! Just a quick "technical" thing: your ending panel is often cutting your lasts words in the video, maybe you should add about 10 to 12 seconds of black screen at the end of your video so that doesn't happen :) Have a lovely day! I'm super happy that you are putting more time in creating youtube content lately, this is a noticed and well appreciated effort!!

Thanks for the tips, and for mentioning confidence! I think that's something a lot of beginner artists lack and they don't improve because they lack the motivation to try to be better when they see other great artists' work. Healthy competition always gives room for growth, so we should never put our own ego before our work.

I haven't painted in months and I can confirm that you totally loose motivation, I'm not motivated at all to get back to drawing.. Well, I actually forced myself to draw a little thing and I feel like the motivation is coming back slowly.

Love your videos, watching has given me a new lease on life, given I burnt out and stopped drawing for a while, watching you just got me back Into it, Funny how you impaticular have helped me get out of my rut though as I stick mainly to traditional art,

This was such an inspiring video. I've been trying to pick up 3D modelling for a while now. I've done a few beginner's courses, as well as made a few simple objects based on references, but, like you said, I find myself getting discouraged by learning new things that open the floodgates to even more things I still need to learn. I haven't opened blender in a few months now because I was getting so discouraged by the massive gap between where I wanted to be, and where I am. Your comments about having the right mindset, self-awareness, and keeping expectations in check are exactly what I needed to hear. I'm going to open blender again tomorrow with a fresh mindset. Thank you, really.

I don't think drawing every single day is an attainable goal for a lot of people, but I do think trying to draw -most- days or even just on a consistent schedule is just as good (possibly better for some people). I do like that you mentioned that stuff like studies and scribbles count, too.

Great video, tons of amazing info.. but I can't help but smile at the end, not for the cut-off.. but because of the ffx outro music. It makes me want to go back and play it again, again..

I watched this video a while ago but wanted to say the advice about having a project to focus on has been very helpful. i started learning how to draw last summer and have been doing comparison pieces using one of my dnd characters every 2-3 months and while there are some pieces that look fairly close or like i haven't improved since the last one, the difference between the first one at 3 months and the one i did at the start of this is measurable and im pretty happy with my progress after 1 year

I'm self-taught, I picked up 3d posing tool so I could pose something that I can blindly trace over. Spent a year doing that, thought my art was great. Then watch your videos and after just a few days of trying out OBSERVATION, I quickly realized how massively stiff my art were. If only I allocated the time to learn the FUNDAMENTALS and UNDERSTAND instead of just following a ref, I would've been wayyyy way better. Thank you Marc!
