When I live in upstate Ny I had a couple small lakes that held 12" bluegills. They are a lot of fun on a 3 wt fly rod. T tied black and red foam sili leg spiders. some that floated and some that slowly sank. And I tied a greed and yellow foam leaf hopper. Both were very effective. One lake I liked was loaded with 8" bluegill and you could catch them all day until you got tired of casting. One thing I noticed over the years is that where you find real big gills you find real big LMB.

not to sneak it on this tender moment, but my father and I do not have any sort of relationship, so this is nice to see.

What part of Ohio are you from? I'm from Eastern KY and there's a few streams we could fish.

Can you show us what flys you used for the gills
@FrugalFlyRodder Жыл бұрын
I plan on showing that by the end of next week. Today's 4 minute video took about all day.

I've had a lot of success with a small foam terrestrial or elk hair caddis up top and a hare's ear or scud pattern below. It's not uncommon to get a double hookup, and once last summer I had a triple as a LMB tried to eat the bottom gillie, only released it just before I netted him.

And we eat them too! I do have nice trout water only 20 minutes away, but fishing topwater bluegills is a blast with a 3-weight rod!

Flyfishing for bluegill is more fun than a human being should be allowed to have.

Why line a 5 weight with a 7 weight line ? Kind of overkill isn't it?
@FrugalFlyRodder Жыл бұрын
Nope... how much experience do you have at trying things out? 🤔
@ronaldfisher222 Жыл бұрын
@@FrugalFlyRodder A bit, I've been 1 weightover , but 2 seems to be a bit difficult not to overload the rod.

Not if it's a fast rod. The reason... I like the challenging fight of lighter rods, but, only if they are stiff enough to cast heavier flies. If you want to do that, you need a heavier line. You do know it's the line that carries the fly and not the rod... right?
