Such stunning beauty, the desert, the mountains, all in 4k, this reminds me so much of when I lived in Las Vegas, Nevada, we rode our big motorcycles out in these areas and I didn't take a camera with me. Thanks. That was a crazy day...we drove from Flagstaff down to Phoenix (about a 3-hour drive) largely because I had seen pictures of this church and wanted to get some shots of it myself. It ended up being 108 degrees that day, but the strange thing was, even though I've experienced temperatures that hot or hotter, it definitely was a day that felt like the hottest I've ever experienced. I was nervous my drone would drop out of the sky from overheating. I kept the flights short and thankfully it survived.

It's true we did spend most of our time in Northern Arizona, but I wanted to make sure I represented other parts, so we did go down to Phoenix and I got several shots that made it into this video. :-) The thing I was most disappointed about once I started going through the footage after we had left, was that I didn't really get shots of saguaro cactuses.

When those weather conditions started to unfold we were about a 15- to 20-minute drive from where that was shot, and my wife basically looked on Google maps for anywhere that would have some topography so that we could add a little bit of foreground texture to the shot. Once we got there and I got the drone up in the air, I was so giddy the whole time I was filming.

Great video. Where is that white church located? Beautiful!
@BlueMantleFilms6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking out the video! The church is east of Phoenix in Apache Junction. I couldn't remember what the significance of it was, so just looked it up again. Turns out it's called the "Elvis Presley Memorial Chapel" and it was a movie prop from his movie "Charro!". It was one that we were going to Goldfield ghost town just up the road from it, and we saw it on "things to see in Arizona" so we stopped by. The thing I remember most about that day was how hot it was. I was out of the car for a mere 4-5 minutes to grab the drone and get that shot, and I felt like I was getting a sunburn almost immediately.
@larrywasan93256 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I’ve been traveling a lot just looking for great scenes for drone footage. I was in Sedona last week, and unfortunately, they’re very strict on flying there. There’s no issue with flying by the church?
@BlueMantleFilms6 жыл бұрын
Are you flying for recreation? Or are you Part 107 certificated? It's a funny thing: for Part 107 (such as myself) there are some things that are stricter, and others that are much more lenient. One thing that is nice for Part 107 is that if the airspace is Class G, as the Sedona airport is, then it's still okay for me to fly there under Part 107 rules. For a hobbyist or recreation, it's necessary to call the airport and notify them (keyword is "notify", you don't have to ask permission) if you're within five miles of an airport. That said, DJI is notorious for restricting flights, so after you've notified the airport of your intent to fly, you'll still likely need to unlock that area for flight. All that said, please fly safely. Even though I can fly close to airports if they're Class G, I still try to stay a bit away so that I don't interfere with airplanes. And it's always my responsibility to avoid flying near airplanes themselves, so if I'm close to a Class G airport I keep an eye out for airplanes and bring the drone down if one is close. I don't need to land, but at least lower its altitude to avoid proximity.
@larrywasan93256 жыл бұрын
I’m 107 certified but most of the time, I’m flying recreation, especially since, as you correctly stated, you only need to notify an airport when you’re flying within 5 miles. Yes, it’s interesting that Sedona is class G with that airport being there and as strict as they are. If you go to their airport website, they have a map that has all kinds of restrictions on flying within 5 miles. They claim a “no drone zone” within 5 miles of the airport and on all the hiking trails. They also state that they “object” to people flying recreationally. Those who may not know any better might be led to believe that you can’t fly at all within 5 miles of the airport. Of course, we know better and the airport is governed by FAA regulations, which allows flying within 5 miles as long as you notify them. Regarding flying from those trails, I guess the city can restrict you from doing so. In terms of flying commercially, the airport wants you to fill out a form to request permission to fly. However, when I tried to fill out the online form, there’s a question on there that only manned pilots would know the answer to, and the date format on the form is not specified so when you submit the form, it gives you an error message that the date format is incorrect. I’ve tried various date formats that still gave me the error message. This leaves me to believe that they’re making it difficult for commercial pilots to fly there and misleading recreational pilots that they can’t fly within 5 miles of the airport. That’s just my opinion, but based on what I’ve seen. Anyway, sorry for the ramble. In any case, I did call the airport. Question: what do you do if you call, and you reach a voice mail? Haha.

This is AWESOME! I have a question I hope you could answer for me. What do you think about using warp stabilizer for smooth shots and how do you get your color grading so perfect? I couldn't find a grainy shadow in a single clip. Thanks in advance!
@BlueMantleFilms6 жыл бұрын
Probably a big reason for the such clean color grading is because this was filmed with the Inspire 1 Raw, so working with raw footage with a 1.7gbps bitrate means there's a lot of data stored in those files! The original CinemaDNG files actually did have a fair bit of noise, but because it's raw it's possible to do quite a bit of noise reduction without that taking a huge toll on the image quality. Overall this was an interesting project, though, because the amount of time needed to post process, since the footage was raw, was a lot longer than I'm generally used to for post processing. Generally I don't think I'll be working in raw unless I'm working on a project for a client who needs it. Regarding Warp Stabilizer, I use it quite often. Particularly with my older drones (I had to admit it, but the Inspire 1 is "old" in this industry) the gimbals weren't as good, so there was a lot of gimbal drift and at least a little gimbal jitter, so sometimes I'd do motion tracking on clips that drifted too much, to stabilize them overall, then I'd run Warp Stabilizer over that to get rid of any small jitters.

Flying FROM the National Recreation Area is off limits, yes, but flying over is still okay, so long as you take-off, control, and land, from outside the boundaries controlled by NPS.
