There are a few different opinions on here about Clint Eastwood's role in this documentary which is great, so, here's my opinion; We owe Clint a great deal of gratitude for the enormous amount of work he put into creating this doco. It's very obvious he didn't do it for the money, he did it because the piano is his biggest passion in life, especially piano blues. I met Ray Charles in 1959 at a Dillions Grocery Store in south Wichita (Senaca Street) and was 11 going on 12. I was playing with the photo light that activate the front door when he called out to me: "Young Man, please come over here". I shuffled half way there and stopped and could see he was blind. He then said: "Please sit down here, I won't hunting you" and patted the Piano bench next to him. I am still amazed at how kind and relateable he was to an 11 year old boy from Wichita. How blessed i was to meet him even for the 15 minutes we spent talking about music and pianos.

Clint Eastwood was a musician before he ever got into acting and directing! He has written scores for movies, and more. A terrific talent, in the acting world, also a very able director, but also as a very talented musician, probably his first love, which just shows how one man can work in so many different walks of life and leave his mark in every genre in which he works, and he's STILL working and will be age 93 on 5-31-23! What a guy! I hope we have him around for a few more years!

I had the great pleasure of experiencing a Ray Charles concert at a theater, during the show the lights went way down and the guys in the wind section were making a ruckus. Ray stopped the intro and asked what the problem was, someone replied it's too dark we can't read the music. Ray Charles replied ' Join The Club' the audience erupted. OK it was a set up, but what a set up. A few years later I attended another Ray Charles music evening at a hotel meeting room, three rows of sofa's around a small stage. Ray Charles and a trio, drinks served between tunes, wow it was like a personal concert, with Ray chatting away between numbers, I'm sure he made those breaks longer to get a cut of the bar tabs. I'm 75 now and that's the memories I can go back to in life.

Ray Charles....can't get enough of that man. Miss him tremendously. When my son was 12 and taking organ and piano lessons. Ray appeared in Andover, MA in a concert. Arthur, my son, was a huge fan of Ray. I surprised him by taking him to the concert. around '82, '83. We were both in heaven. He has fulfilled his dream and is a jazz musician in NY. Can't get much better than that.

Great video on piano blues. I had the great fortune to see Ray Charles twice in Seattle. Genius rhythm and blues. Love hearing Jay McShann and the Blue Devils with Big Joe Williams. Kansas City was the place back then for some of America's best music. God bless Black Americans, their music, dance and grace in the face of fierce racism. RIP Ray Charles and Jay McShann.

In this 2003 documentary, in order of live appearance, Clint Eastwoord is 73, Ray Charles is 73, Dave Brubeck is 83, dr. John is 62, Marcia Ball is 54, Pinetop Perkins is 90 (!). Jay McShann is 87, and Pete Jolly is 71. (Professor Longhair had been dead for 23 years at 62 years of age. )

I'm fortunate to have caught a free Dr John concert on Jackson Square in New Orleans in 1987 (on the stairs to the Moonwalk). Wow, what a treat! It wasn't even announced. They were setting up, I was walking by, I asked, they said "Dr. John." By the time the concert started the entire area was jammed wall-to-wall. I wish I could relive it. Such a night!

Boogie is not only fascinating, but the dexterity required is extraordinary! And, its musical to the hear. In Classical once the great waltzes were composed, musicality is lost. Its just a high speend road race--esp. for piano and violin. And, in Jazz, no direction that a listener could distinguish where the band is goinging....just wandering around lost. Boogie is happy, accepting of blues feeling, so it is thereby highly musical!

Thanks again, for the memories. My mother knew these people when she lived in Ithaca, NY and I learned to play the e-flat alto sax and learned to make it "talk" - and say "I want my mama", But she didn't want me to get serious so she dumped water on my talent. I got my FCC license just so I could DJ for a new radio station and relive some of those dreams. My sax got me through my rough times. I choke up even when talking about it. And I remember going to my room to nap and dream about it. L O L She never did accept me for my "talent". She often said discouraging things even after I proved to myself that I did and could do, anything I set my mind to. Even today, I still love this kind of music. My Mom is probably why I got my FCC license. My way of staying connected with the process and loving my job in interviewing local talent. My own brother would NOT let me interview him on my radio show. ( What was THAT all about ?????) So today, I still shut up and sit down.

I used to listen to Clint at his restaurant/bar in Carmel CA. I was down there playing with the Monterey Symphony or the annual Jazz Festival. He was very nice and hung out back stage sometimes. He has also scored movies.

Skip James recorded some great piano blues in 1931. With a very distinctive style. His later piano blues recordings for Vanguard are also great.

I love when Clint starts singing that song that he did with Ray on Any Which Way You can! This is an incredible documentary. I don't think could have picked a better example of some of the finest American Blues/Jazz Piano players that are still with us. Great show
