Bit of advice as i've just done this job,have a solder bolt at the ready!!U'll get to that later,the large orange seal at the turbo,when you replace it it has little round raised location tabs that fit up into holes in the black plastic air induction plastic,inspect these holes in the air intake carefully for little cracks!! If the cracks are there melt them clised with a solder bolt,the new orange seal is thicker as it hasn't been compressed like the okd one,if you have any cracks in your black intake that meets the turbo they will spread and crack further when you tighten the jubilee clip at the turbo! The new seal is difficult to fit over the turbo as it's thicker,it puts a lot of stress on the plastic intake!!Be prepared for damage!

Excellent call! ANY diesel fuel system, particularly this diesel motor just requires an oil/fuel filter system before the fuel enters the fuel induction! The clean diesel fuel is paramount to your long term durability! Also...I just combine a water/fuel separator filter next to the oil bypass filter. It's just far more practical in terms of long term value/costs.

the PCV also works as centrifugal separator. The suction is from the center high up. and the breather vapor is coming in from tangent. So oil is been thrown to the outer edge and drops down from the air. Then it leaks back down to the breather when you let of the throttle.

You absolutely right , it’s very important to take a look about that partical component. But next time I would also clean that oil what still left there , because nobody wants fire ( hot engine + Oil) or maybe the connection from the Rail or the copper seal from the Injector is leaking that would be also dangerous.

Hi. Great job on these videos. I really appreciate them. I have a 2008 GL320 with about 200K. I rescued it from an abusive situation. I have the swirl flap motor issue and did the resistor fix as a temporary solution, which worked but the vehicle still goes in to limp mode occasionally. Once I restart the engine it’s back in normal mode. I’ve checked the resistor value and it’s fine. I’m thinking the residual oil build up in the connector may be causing a poor connection sometimes. So, I’m debating the swirl flap delete. I also need to change the oil cooler gaskets so I’m following all your instructions on that including the glow plugs. My question is, what is the advantage of NOT deleting the swirl flap motor and instead cleaning everything maniacally, changing the turbo and air intake seals, and then monitoring for any oil leaks ongoing? Thank you. I realize there are no “right” answers but I value your opinion.

One word of advice... Make sure that the top part of the oil catcher, where it might have or has a sponge, never gets clogged. Otherwise, you will have oil come out of the engine through the dipstick tube or some other place due too much pressure inside of the engine. So, make constantly clean the oil catcher...

I have a 648 and a 642. The gt2359v was coming apart @ 149k on the 648. I also have to rebuild the gt2056v on the 642 (160k) today. I believe the actual problem is engine oil quality and change intervals. I have had several 617 cars well over 300k without a worn-out turbo. I've put on 30k since the rebuild last year (05 e320 cdi) and the car is a rocketship. Zero turbo lag. I'm using amsoil signature series 5w40 diesel (suitable for dpf+def systems). So far no oil consumption between oil changes.

Thank you for the video and the parts info you pass on--saw my bluetec had quite a puddle of oil under it and after putting it up on a lift and investigating, pretty much came to the conclusion it was coming from the oil fill port--only thing I could figure would cause that to happen would be a clogged pcv valve. @Dima-jq3mj
@Dima-jq3mj 4 жыл бұрын
It is more of a preventive action... Just make sure that you don't buy it from the dealer, it will cost you an arm and a leg. You can buy it genuine or OEM online for a lot less. I'll give you a real example, RBM of Atlanta Georgia, wanted a $1000 for a 220 amps alternator for a 2013 Mercedes Sprinter, while Rock Auto sells it online OEM (Valeo 220 amps new) for $380. Same exact part $ 600+ less than the dealership.

Does the newer version of PCV valve (Aluminum one with 2 bolts)work on the same principle and do you know does it have the same problem happening
@Dima-jq3mj
@Dima-jq3mj 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it does work on the same principal... And yes it does leak oil with time and needs to be replaced. This is the reason why Mercedes requires a 229.51 oil for the diesel engines that have DPF systems. The 229.51 is a low Ash/Soot oil, which means that when it burns it has far less parts per million emitted vs regular oils. Most of the oil used by modern engines is used through the crankcase ventilation system, due to the fact that vacuum/suction of the engine is used to ventilate the crankcase of the engine. On older engines no vacuum/suction was used for ventilation.

Hi, I have the same car, same mileage. Had you had any fault codes? My E320 went into limp mode, and had 2 fault codes in November. After taking it to a shop, they replaced fuel filter, and checked for leaks, they claimed my fuel line was full of soot! It had to be cleaned manually. They replaced or so the receipt states the EGR cooler kit/seals and gaskets. I was charged half the value of my car! And I’ve taken it back 2 more times due to check engine light and limp mode, basically the same reason I took it to them in the first place. Last time they had my car 5 1/2 weeks, and replaced the turbo actuator at no charge,but it still wasn’t fixed. The manager told me it’s probably the DPF filter is probably clogged, but they are equipped to clean it. The mileage has improved, but still goes into limp mode. Latest code was P0299. That’s the first time I’ve had that one. Any ideas? I love my car, but I can’t keep spending thousands on it.

the Diesel engine is hard to beat in terms of reliability, fuel economy, and power - if maintained properly. The biggest thing you'll need to worry about with the 2008 diesels is the DPF filter clogging or not regenerating - I don't believe the e320 has the adblue system. There are a few "Delete" options you can explore, but we haven't had any issues with our 3.0L sprinters we use for our delivery company - you can force DPF regen using tools like the iCarsoft MB2 via OBD

I did change the PCV valve on my 2008 Sprinter every 50k and didn't have any issues with DPF or intake manifolds. At 260k I completely modified the software and got rid of DPF/EGR/EKAS/TPS/Lambda systems. I would advise you to change the PCV valve every 40-50k, or every time you change the fuel filter. You can do about 50k, base on my own experience, on a good MANN or Hengst fuel filter. Your 2013 GL most likely takes this PCV valve... See the link below.. www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/WC/96182-01289532.html?YN&PartsGeek+Google+Base&+Mercedes+Sprinter+3500+Crankcase+Vent+Valve+Genuine+10-18+Mercedes+Crankcase+Vent+Valve+2011+2013&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIrdb7z6Hj5AIVyMDACh13sQE6EAQYAyABEgKzW_D_BwE Or if you can post the last 8 digits of the VIN number, I can look it up in Mercedes' EPC/WIS and tell you exactly which PCV valve your GL takes.

I appreciate your video and hope you can provide some possible insight to a problem that I'm trying to narrow down. My 2011 MB Sprinter 3.0 diesel has a noticeable engine speed fluctuation while holding a steady throttle. It typically begins anywhere above 2000 rpm. This is a very rhythmic and consistent surge or fluctuation. This occurs when parked and not in motion, or when I was driving at 30 mph or any other speed. There are no apparent codes that come up. We've traced all possible sources, including getting the ECU retuned, replacing the turbo and the actuator. Any idea if these could be causing this surge?

You never showed how you replaced the gaskets and where the second (smaller) gasket goes... Is it the one at 3:55? Or do these 2 red gaskets go together somehow in the same place? I'm sorry, it might be self explanatory for some but I'm as dumb as it gets when it comes to any mechanical stuff.

Gosh I really really appreciate you and your videos. I've owned a lot of cars and my 2007 e320 bluetec is my second MB diesel. And, while I'm not afraid to do repair work, this cars engine is the most complicated I have ever owned. I just did the PCV valve abd replaced the boot. Super easy. I also took the car to the local MB dealer to read the check engine code. MAS and after cat oxygen sensor was indicated and I changed both myself. My light is still on and my android OBD2 reader says it is P0101 Mass or Volume Air Flow A circuit. Any ideas?

Look at the airfilters. They are a bit tricky to change. So they are staying mostly longer unchanged, then they should be. Control the airmass-sensor although.

@MBDieselFreak
@MBDieselFreak 4 жыл бұрын
It would work fine for the updated om642 (2009+) as well, provided the oil seperator p# is the same. Oil catch can is always a good idea if it's installed properly, as it prevents oil vapor from entering the intake (the main reason for gummed up intakes)

@@MBDieselFreak I have wondered about this issue for some time. In the old diesels used in the 123 series cars (owned a '81 240d for 26 years... remained very much like new the entire time with maintenance) and my very elderly mom (now) having her 1985 5cly. turbo diesel coup still, local dealer keeps saying its basically new looking). Anyway, in both those cars which I have done the routine maintenance on (dealer has to do some things I don't have tools for). Never did the oil in the inlet, which exists all the time in higher volumes than the OM642 engine could tolerate, ever gum up or coke. In fact, there was no problem. I have spoken to some friends who have worked for diesel engine manufacturers in the engineering and test labs as engineers... not a problem in diesels, is the comment. In fact Bob ran the entire AirResearch test facility for nearing 20 years, and they did the development of the 5 cylinder turbo diesel under contract for DB / MB. The only issue Bob reported was getting the engines through the 1000 hr. full power durability test on the dyno. Why was valve recession. The German engineers felt the std. ductile iron valve seats were more durable in actual road use. However, when you run an engine at max power for long periods the valves tend to recede. The routine maintenance of valve lash does not work in those extreme conditions of power and duration. He would sneak in hard seats in those engines so they would not have cam/lifter surface failures and valve issues such as burned valves, due to inadequate cooling. How that relates here is that one wonders why these engines have gum up problems of intake system. Well they have a very high rate of EGR flow at certain points in performance cycle. This at low engine speeds and in stop and go driving puts upwards of 50% of the inlet air is recirculated (but cooled) exhaust gas. So why the EGR gas to ambient air cooler is lower than the intake manifold and intake charge valves. So it would seem logical that would gum up first as oil would end up there. Apparently, that is not an actual settling area and the oil mist must be heating up to the point to cause the oil vapor / minute droplets to be thickened and coalesce on the inlet surfaces. But if the cooler is working why would not it keep the temperature down from the EGR flow?

Alex from LegitStreetCars brought me here and I'm glad he did! MBDieselFreak - I've got an '09 ML320 which has had the DPF & SCR & DEF systems deleted; however the car still appears to be burning a lot of oil. I'm about to replace the PCV Valve as per your video's recommendation but is there anything else that you may know of that could cause it to burn lots of oil; I have to top it up with a Quart nearly every 7-10 days! not sure if that's normal but it sure wasn't like the prior to deleting the DPF

Typically burning oil is caused by bad piston rings or leaky valve stem seals.

@@Docbrut My R320 CDI is also deleted. I also had the oil cooler seals replaced, you may be losing oil from there. Sometimes you don't see an oil puddle in your parking because the belly pan has these foam like material (for sound deadening) that can absorb any drippings.

How did you delete the EGR and the Intake Swirl Motor? Doesn't the ECU check for it and show a CEL when its missing?
@MBDieselFreak
@MBDieselFreak 5 жыл бұрын
I didnt delete the EGR, the Intake flap motor can be deleted with a "resistor trick". check my om642 oil cooler seals video on how to do that resistor trick.
@Dima-jq3mj
@Dima-jq3mj 4 жыл бұрын
He didn't delete anything. He simply tricked the ECU. There is no way to completely delete the EGR, as example. We call it a "EGR delete", but in reality what is done by tuners, is a remap of the operational programming of the EGR. The EGR is reprogrammed to stays closed at any RPMs or operational range of the engine. That is the same with the intake manifold flaps, they stay open at any operational ranges of the engine. DPF/ DEF and Lambda requires remap and delete of the DTC trouble codes, which simply means that the check engine light will never come on if you disconnect a Nox sensor as an example, because there is no code for that since it's been erased from the memory of the ECU. It is very easy to do modifications on EDC16 ECUs. EDC17 ECUs are a lot more complicated due to the encryption of the tricore chips/processors used in them.
