Hi, great, first video I have found with the same surging, I seem to have this fault, is there a way to check the turbo itself to garentee it is at fault? I have the surge I have the pressure code and no eml. I must say though it is intermittent, doesn't do it every time you floor it, 50% maybe but it only happens on full send accel

This is one of the best engines Mercedes made after 2000 . I've had it in many vehicles including jeeps . As long as you keep it up with preventive maintenance and change the oil every 8000 km it runs and runs and runs ... as long as you're not scared to do some stuff yourself , it's not really expensive . Love it , recomend , 5 stars , 10 out of 10 .

@em4703
@em4703 8 ай бұрын
@@MoesKeckeEcke Because he's parroting internet stories. The v6 is more sensitive to bad maintenance compared to the older i6, that's true, but that's about it. It's only issues are with the oil cooler and the flaps getting stuck, but the flaps can be cancelled with a resistor and the oil cooler can be kept an eye on. I've seen fleets of sprinters with this engine, all around 650-800k km and still running. Some oil leak here and there, but still ran strong. 1 went over 1 mil km before being finally retired, but not because the engine was bad, but because the truck bed and inside the cabin was getting really worn out.

On the 8:02 minute when you replacing the old intake manifold damper links it is important to check if the manifold flaps have position sensors and if they do, the aluminum replacement needs to have additional steel pieces on the sides, similar to original plastic, to trigger the sensor when the flap is at max and min positions.

2 other common issues I have found over the years is the PCV on the back left head faiils which allows the oil to travel down the pipe and into the "Y" pipe and then out of the large orange seal. The turbo ends up being changed thinking it's leaking oil when infact it's the PCV thats failed instead. The other one is the large green O ring in the inter cooler pipe at the top of the engine. It's either missing or not giving a proper seal.

The other " while your there" job to do is replace the O ring on the EGR cooler plumbing where it pushes into the inlet manifold. (7.10)The other end of the cooler from the flange. I had to do this whole job because that O ring failed and leaked coolant at a huge rate. Within a couple of days of first seeing a leak under the car the engine wouldn`t hold any coolant. This was an OM642 in a Jeep with only 140k on the clock. Good excuse to do the Oil cooler seals before they leaked so no big mess in the engine valley to clean up.

An oil catch can circuit between CCV & turbo inlet would reduce substantially amount of oil that cascades down into valley from batwing turbo inlet seal. In my opinion, that is true source of most car om642's oil leaks. It soaks swirl flap motor, splashes all over turbo pedestal & then pools around oil cooler before draining through that weep hole in valley near bell housing. These issues don't really exist on 642s from Sprinters because they have a much better air intake system & larger oil pan that can accept 5 more quarts of oil. Every time I see another om642 oil leak video, I thank my lucky stars that I still have an om648 w211 on the road.

This vid gave me flashbacks of when I did the cooler seals on my R class. It was fortunate that I did it during furlough as it took me a couple of weeks (a lot of that was waiting for parts though). I found the previous owner had done the resistor mod to delete the swirl flap motor. I took the opportunity to reinstate the flaps with a new motor and an aluminium rod kit. The previous owner had also fitted a chineseium actuator to the turbo but I ordered a genuine refurbed one from the states. One little mod I added was I added a shroud made from an old drinks can to cover the swirl flap motor as even though I was replacing the turbo inlet seal, I have only ever known them to leak. The shroud is shaped to guide any oil that drips down behind the flap motor and into the V. I'd be curious to know if you have a definite fix for the red seal leaking?

Well done, there not easy on an r class, it’s probably the hardest one along side a Vito. So well done, plus you’ve addressed loads of other issues.

At first, I thought that you were going to be working on a failed radiator/trans oil cooler which was what put paid to my E211 270 transmission - good old Valeo rads! Enjoyed this one though!

Cut my teeth on these in the early 2010's....did sooo many exhaust manifolds on the 642 for metal pieces coming apart and mashing the turbo...That and the 272 balance shaft tear wearing off, Good old Crank/CAM correlation. I miss my days at a Mercedes dealer, Now I'm meddling with Audi...😂

I have all the faults you’ve covered on my ml320, I had the oil cooler done a year and a half ago, at over a £1000 , but it would appear that my mechanic stitched me up it is now leaking water and a bit of oil not as much oil as before, so it’s lying in my driveway now doing nothing , being a pensioner I can’t afford to get it done again, I also had a new turbo fitted 4 years ago and the car started the kangaroo bit when I accelerated hard, but again couldn’t get anyone to diagnose the problem at the time, 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ but thanks for your video very informative cheers 🙏👍👍👍

Pure professionals. I am thinking of buying a 2013 CLS shooting brake 3l Cdi with 130k mile on her. Very well serviced with the cooler gaskets already done apparently. Just wondering would this need to be done again down the road, is this issue a design fault regardless of how well its serviced. Are these engines very reliable generally if serviced well. Cheers for the video guys it was a pleasure to watch.

Hi, just find your video, very nice and clean work. I own a W211 E320 with this engine, and i have que same problem as shown at 1:25 but at 1900 to 2200rpm and sometimes only above 3300rpm. Its not always present, for exemple if i reset the computer i have no problem for about 100km... The flap motor is brand new but not the plastic parts on the inlet manifold, but the flaps moves well. The EGR is new as its pressure sensor. No fault exept the exaust back pressure sensor. After watching your video i think that my problem is with the turbo but i am not sure, and this part is very expensive (3250€ here) so... Do anyone had the same problem as me ? Do you think it could be the turbo ? Im struggling with this for month now, seen 3 mercedes dealers about it and they didn't fixed it at all (but sure took my money)
@sprautos

sounds like a turbo fault for sure, and also with you have a back pressure sensor fault which is a good indicator, for a cheaper fix you could replace the turbo actuator on its own, part numbers are very specific on those things so you have to be carful. good luck.

Great video, I have learnt a lot, I spend too much time watching your videos! At what mileage do you usually see these parts fail? I got a CLS 219 with the OM642 at 73k miles. Would it be worth doing the jobs in the video as a prevention at some point or just wait till one of them fails and do the whole lot? Thanks.

I had an E320 straight 6 from new, put 200k miles on it without a single issue. Then I had TWO of these W211 V6 CDI's. They both had Oil leaks, Swirl Flaps. EGR Valves, DPF Filters, Turbo Actuator and eventually both turbos all replaced on these absolute shit boxes. Genuinely wouldn't take another one of these for free.

I have this issue on my ML280cdi (OM642) I had the back pressure sensor fault, my dad who's an ex mechanic thought he'd sorted it. He's 74 bless him, if I'd known this earlier I wouldn't have had him do what he did to try and solve it. I'll be booking it in here and getting it sorted 😢wasted around £200 on parts as it's started again with the kangaroo hops 😩

Well it won’t all be a waste as if he has replaced the back pressure sensor we would have recommend that also anyway. Good on him for Giving it a go. And it caught me out the first time also.

modern cars have so many issues designs are poor from seals and wet timing belts to timing chain guides so so poor the modern customer is forced to go to garages and with so many ECU requiring restting once a componet is replaced but the big boys thrive on this
