In this season 2 finale, Jonathan treks all the way to Antarctica to investigate life south of the polar circle. Along the way he dives in the majestic kelp forests of Patagonia, where crabs rule the sea floor. Once he arrives in Antarctica, his adventures continue. He swims with penguins, dives under an iceberg, meets a massive jellyfish 3 feet across, and has an incredible encounter with a Leopard seal, the apex predator of Antarctica. This program won a New England Emmy Award!

**********************************************************************
My journey begins with several flights from my home in the United States to the southernmost city in the world-Ushuaia, Argentina at the tip of Tierra del Fuego.
My home away from home: the Aleksey Marychev, a 210 foot long Russian research vessel with an ice-strengthened hull.
On our way down the Beagle Channel to open water, we pass a small rock island covered in South American Sea Lions.
And then we pass the famous Beagle Channel Lighthouse.
After leaving the Beagle Channel, we will round Cape Horn into the Drake Passage and make our way more than 600 miles south until we reach the protection afforded by end of the Antarctic peninsula.
My first glimpse of the underwater terrain reveals mostly just some seaweed on the bottom, flowing gently in the current.
But a closer look reveals a community of bottom-dwelling invertebrates, including vast armies of limpets, snail-like animals with cone-shaped shells. They eat the algae on the rocks.
A bright red sea star hunts down limpets for lunch.
Nearby, Anemones wait for prey, their stinging tentacles armed and ready for an unwary fish.
A sea cucumber uses feathery, branching arms to grab plankton out of the water to eat.
It’s a Gentoo penguin, swimming around with the grace of a dolphin and the speed of a torpedo!
These birds might not be able to fly, but underwater they sure can swim. Their wings are adapted for providing underwater propulsion, and few animals in the ocean can swim with such grace and speed as a penguin.
A Gentoo Penguin is easy to identify because of its bright red beak.
Many of these Gentoos are barely more than chicks, waiting patiently for their downy baby feathers to fall off. These poofy feathers keep them warm when they are little, but they’re not good for swimming.
As the birds get older and their adult feathers grow in, they start gathering down by the ocean.
Soon, they take short hops into the freezing water to hunt in the shallows for krill and small invertebrates.
Penguins on the move porpoise in and out of the water like dolphins-but then they can hop right back up on land like no dolphin I’ve ever seen!
As I rise toward the surface at the end of my dive, I encounter a huge wall of ice. It’s an iceberg, that drifted into the bay.
The wall of the iceberg is covered in dimples, like the ones on a golf ball. This pattern forms as the iceberg melts. Thousands of tiny bubbles are released from the melting ice as well, making the water near the iceberg look like a fizzy drink!
The iceberg only rises a few feet above the surface, but its more than thirty feet deep.
When you see an iceberg floating by, there’s not that much above water sometimes, but that’s because 90% of an iceberg is underwater. If I flip it over, you can see just how much ice there is. That’s why icebergs are really dangerous to ships, because you can’t see the part that’s hidden underwater. Fun with ice!
I carry my camera down to the boat and we’re off. Today we’re hunting quietly for a very special animal.
And sure enough, we found them. Leopard seals sleeping on an iceberg. These animals which reach 12 feet long, are the apex predators of the Antarctic. There are no sharks in the waters of Antarctica, but these seals fill that niche in the food chain.
Soon, the Leopard seals wake from their nap and come over to investigate us.
They have been known to bite and deflate Zodiacs when they are being territorial.
The seal makes a few passes to check me out, but he seems a lot more curious than aggressive.
Divers are not very common down here. This Leopard seal has probably never seen a diver, or a video camera before.
Either he sees his reflection in the lens, or he’s looking for a career in show business. Either way, this animal sure doesn’t seem to mind my presence.
The leopard seal is so curious, that he stays around for more than an hour. I even have enough time to get my still camera and take a few pictures.

Scuba diving in Antarctica is an incredibly rare experience that few humans will ever do. It is almost like going to Mars. You got to see things that humans are really really were never supposed to see, because of our fragile bodies. It's really crazy. And we got to see it too! Love it.

Not everyone can say they’ve seen the bottom of the world. That’s pretty amazing, man. Pretty amazing. And we get so see these places through your eyes. And thanks for prioritizing safety. Diving is a dangerous passion to pursue, but you prioritize safety and set a good example for those who will follow in your footsteps. And thanks for your family friendly and family oriented content. You aren’t thrill seeking or vulgar, and you don’t fall into the growing tendency to hyper focus on the flora and fauna to the exclusion of people. Harmony in the family and in the natural world. That’s beautiful. Thanks for sharing, Jonathan. Peace to you and be safe. -Clint

Thanks Clint! When I was a kid, I watched "The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau" and it was a good clean family show on TV. A lot of very young kids loved that show, mesmerized by the underwater world. I recognize that our audience is diverse. We have 40 year old divers watching and also 8 year old kids. Gotta keep it cool for everyone. Thanks for recognizing what we are trying to do!!

I remember 'fishing' for crab using a wood platform and fried chicken. You can feel when there is something afoot and one pulls the platform up gently and slowly. As soon as I could see the platform I knew I had a doggone humongous King. He was firmly happy munching on chicken. My friends and their kids were bent over the edge of the boat, hooting! I know this is a family-friendly show, Jonathan! But all the kids knew what the middle 'finger' was anyway cause this huge 'catch' literally flipped me the bird and slid back into the ocean. The kids went off on another stint of laughter! Adults were slower. Next time I'll use a net? Or a cage?

amazing video Jon. I hope you have sponsors willing to pay you money for these adventures. But i somehow doubt it. Either way you''re a great guy you don't fish but you swim, mad respect. idk what im getting at but i know you're an environmentalist and i respect you greatly and your videos. one love brother.

Man this show (and its "made for tv" production aesthetic, it does air in many countries iirc) really takes me back to when I was a kid, watching documentaries on animal planet and discovery (before they switched to nothing but reality tv 🙁). Those shows made even the days when I was home sick from school a little better, stuck on the couch all day but with stuff like this playing it always made me less uncomfortable. Definitely gonna show this to my niece and nephews so they can enjoy and see the kinda stuff that I used to watch on tv.

Now that I've started dry suit diving myself, I can't imagine how you can bear using a half mask! I dive with a full face mask, with a half mask I'm afraid the cold would make my face fall off!
@seikibrian8641

I hear you. I don't have a dry suit (yet), but I couldn't live without my full-face mask. The water where I dive runs between 45 and 50°F most of the year, and the times I dove with a standard mask I had to terminate my dives after 20 - 25 minutes because my face hurt. I'd get knots in the muscles of my forehead, or my lips would go numb...or both. Not anymore! Now I just need some heated gloves and I'll be all set. ;-)

@@seikibrian8641 as someone who lives in Maine I'm unfortunately in the same boat our waters cold year round and I'm getting ready to get my OW certificate then dry suit and FFM because I'm not nearly as hardcore as Johnathan and will be switching to FFM as soon as possible

@@itsyaboimat2393 I was planning on getting my dry suit certification in January, but I couldn't swing it financially. Maybe in the fall. Part of the problem for me is that I'm very tall, but not very big around, and finding a dry suit that fits my height without being like a blimp will probably require going with a custom-made suit, and that'd be pricey. In the mean time I have a custom-made 7mm two-piece wet suit (so 14mm over my torso), and that keeps me pretty warm. (It requires a LOT of lead to get below the surface, but that's another story.) In keeping things economical, I went with the OTS Spectrum FFM since it works with almost any regulator; I just pulled the mouthpiece off my trusty Aqua~Lung Legend Supreme and installed it on the Spectrum, and I was good to go. It was nice being able to use a regulator I already had a few year's experience with. Good luck on your OW course, and happy diving!

@@seikibrian8641 thanks man! I'm looking at the Kirby Morgan M48 Mod1 because it can be used as a regular dive mask and with KM pods it can be used as a FFM
@seikibrian8641
@seikibrian8641 4 жыл бұрын
@@itsyaboimat2393 One of the things I like about most FFMs is that you can breath through your mouth or nose as desired, you can talk, you can even chew bubble gum if that's your thing. The Kirby-Morgan, on the other hand, requires use of a KM mouthpiece, which sort of defeats one of the benefits of a FFM in my mind. On the other hand, one of the available pods allows use with a rebreather or double-hose scuba regulator, and with the twist of a lever switches over to a standard second stage. That second stage could be connected to a different tank with a different gas mixture, if desired. It's a pretty cool design.
