This is literally soooo helpful, wish more people did this with other "weird" instruments

Dude, thanks so much for covering this issue! I faced the need to record a tuba all of a sudden today, your video was really helpful ;)

If you use a cotton rag and clip it to the top of the tuba while recording it gives it a even better flat sound. Cuz sometimes the tuba while recording has a lot of brass resonance that can make it sound like a duck. So it makes it flat, more bass resonance 👌🏼. It’s a technique spanish producers use for their music.

Cool video, I like hearing the comparison. I was talking with the one of the guys from Dirty Dozen brass band almost 20 years ago and he said they drop the mic down into the sousaphone. So I went home and put my sm58 into a couple of socks and dropped it all the way down the bell. Super fat bass sound. I have a recording bell tuba and a sousaphone. Works great in both.

I honestly will have to try that! There are some situations I would want the fattest bass sound possible. Good idea!

Any suggestions for removing valve noise when you record? I've got a 60s Olds and no matter what felts and springs I use I always get a lot of valve thudding
@BoneZone Жыл бұрын
Your in luck now that I work in the brass repair industry now! So the best way is brand new cork and felts. If it fits, Yamaha makes a spring covered in like silicone and almost eliminates that noise entirely. Other than that, your valve guide is probably brass if its really old and you can switch it to nylon valve guides, which is custom work if there's someone around that can do that. We do at our shop.
