One of the top handful of coaches of all time. Other contemporaries like Woody Hayes and Bo Schembechler weren't in the same class. A protégé of Duffy Daugherty, Devaney took teams at every level and elevated them to glory. I met him as a caddy in Michigan and he was totally disarming. A charming yet forceful man. He took Nebraska football and galvanized their followers into the most rabid fan base in the country. From a complete non entity in football to the most powerful team in the country. Between him and his protégé Tom Osborne, Nebraska had the greatest period of sustained success in college football history. How about these numbers? Nebraska was 356-69 under Devaney and Osborne with five national championships! Other than my home school MSU, the Cornhuskers were my favorite team. Devaney knew how to leave on top and so did Tom Osborne. In their last eight seasons combined Devaney and Osborne won five national titles. Nebraska was as sure a thing as death, taxes and crooked politicians under his watch. A true legend if ever there was one.

@@dstreck9 got back on track PDQ. Fans can be fickle. Also wanted to fire because he couldn’t win consistently on the national,level. He was offered the CU job but he didn’t want to get in the gutter I guess. Yes I said gutter because CU is the gutter
