BMO is more advanced in tech than Neptr and was only given sentience because of Ice King zapping it. It is not like BMO was like that towards the other MO robots that were different colors than him, but ultimately the same sort of robot. If BMO was cruel to other MO bots that weren't the same blue he is, then I think THAT would make him "racist". We, humans, are many different races, but we are all homo sapiens at the end of the day. Humans being bungholes to other humans for being a different shade would probably project to us humans being prejudice against other hominids if we ever encountered them. I bet some of us were like that back in the day when other hominids were still around.

I absolutely agree with you! BMO is a fascinating character in Adventure Time, and their imagination is one of their most prominent traits. In the episode you mentioned, "Football" BMO's imagination allows them to enter a different reality where they are the ruler of a mirror world. It's fascinating to see how BMO's imagination can create such a vivid and complex alternate reality, and it speaks to the power of creativity and imagination in our lives. The idea that BMO's imagination could become real is a testament to the show's emphasis on the importance of imagination and creativity. It also raises interesting questions about the nature of reality and the power of our thoughts and perceptions to shape our experiences. Everything that happened that you said was just in her head WAS real, but only as long as he continued to imagine and believe in it. Air didn't reply because air wasn't real, Air didn't reply because BM0 believed they were truly alone.
@HeadCasey Жыл бұрын
Nope. Spoilers for the Jake Video: Jake can imagine things to be real because is he Prismo. A Glob in a dog body, that's all. BMO attempts to imagine stuff into reality all the time, and fails constantly. Many characters are seen failing to imagine stuff into existence. The only times that anyone else pulls it off, is when Jake is specifically there with them using his powers to imagine their success. Like in Guardians of Sunshine when Jake yells "I believe in you" to Finn who suddenly now can do the magic combo move. It wasn't Finn's dance that made the move work, it was just Jake genuinely imagining that that the move would work.

Fair enough, I will admit that idea is beyond my scope of knowledge and understanding... but I am open to the concept of it, it could completely be the thing and I just can't see it because I can't comprehend how to interpret what I am seeing in BMOs mind
@peepytime Жыл бұрын
Hmm.. this video was an interesting study on BMO! Though I think often (especially in the context of cartoons) "evil" feels like it such an absolute. Cartoons often play around with the dichotomy of "good and evil", Adventure time especially! But I think what Adventure time as a series has tried to explore is how people aren't one of two things. People can do good things, or bad things.. but they aren't only those things. BMO can imagine anything is real, and "anything" includes things we find immoral. So I can see how he could be placed in the box of "secretly (or not so secretly) capable of evil actions." But I think one trait of hers that is important to think about and discuss is how she lacks and/or struggles with empathy. She can feel sympathy! But understanding exactly how another person feels is not something she is entirely able to do. Stories ultimately are also about the people who make them, and also the people who watch them. I understand this is about the characters within their own universe and completely respect that! BMO can be so many things. He can be like a 5 year old kid just having fun with his imagination, and he can also be a window into how people are very different from one another. (Because there are people who struggle with and do not entirely feel empathy. This does not make them bad people) "Football" is absolutely one of my favorite BMO episodes, and I really love that you included this clip (min 6:11). Finn and Jake show how supportive they are of their friend, and they respect him even though he is not entirely making sense. BMO is limitless potential.. those who spend time with him and care about him drastically shift which direction that potential can go.
@peepytime Жыл бұрын
But please don't take this as some sort of slight, or argument I'm trying to make. You brought up some really interesting questions for the watcher to consider. In the context of cartoons, I completely get why the idea of "heros and villians!" is a major point of discussion. Wondering if "x character was a villian" is a really fun thought experiment to delve into! Starting to wonder about this binary of good vs evil is something I feel is incredibly important for a narrative. I mentioned relationships in the last paragraph up there, and I think adventure time has always been about those. Especially now that we've been getting this amazing Fionna and Cake series! (I absolutely will NOT spoil it, don't worry!) More and more than ever i'm realizing that Adventure time is about relationships and cycles of mistreatment. Adventure time is also about mental health, and its about growing up and realizing that people are different. The things people do have an effect, and breaking out of those cycles.
@HeadCasey Жыл бұрын
Very good points you are making. Yes Adventure Time usually plays complex situations with the good, the bad and the depression in everyone 🤔 I did not mean to portray BMO as pure evil or pure good, just draw attention to the fact that BMO has layers of both, as most people would 🤷♀️ As for people who can only emulate empathy... I am actually one of those people 🤦♀️ But I do care about things and people, in my own way. I actually relate very much with BMO in that regard. I've always imagined BMO as an allegory to DID manifesting during formative years, which can explain a lot of why distinguishing reality, memory and imagination is so difficult with/for BMO. This parallel could also explain the "internal world" we see BMO stuck in when Football is out or "fronting". This internal world exists constantly and can be what goes on inside when they tell their stories. BMO as a metaphor to DID can also explain their avoidance when asked questions about their existence or feelings, which is common (if not primary) of those with DID.

having other people in your head isn't really imagination or delusion, at least how BMO behaves. first of all, as a robot, BMO could just have multiple "programs" running simultaneously. more realistically though, BMO seems to portray dissociative behavior.
@HeadCasey Жыл бұрын
Ah, but Football is in BMOs head and BMO is unable to identify that. BMO truly believes in Football as a separate entity, and as such, that's a delusion considering we saw BMO doing both voices while sitting on a toilet 🤣
@Blackbird74733 Жыл бұрын
@@HeadCasey I don't see why Football can't be a separate entity that has alternated control over BMO's body. hallucinations aren't able to gain control of the body in any case I know of. and while it's possible to experience a delusion that you are someone or something else, the fact that we see BMO as a separate consciousness that distinguishes themself from Football, it seems unlikely that Football can be explained through delusions or any form of psychosis alone. I see three solutions to this conflict: BMO is affected by some sort of magic or other weirdness of Ooo, BMO follows different rules on consciousness and identity than we understand since they are a computer, or BMO is experiencing dissociation in the way a human would (namely DID or some related phenomenon)
@HeadCasey Жыл бұрын
@@Blackbird74733 that's fair, you raise a very good point. Several people have commented that BMO had the DID thing, I'll admit I don't know much about it and I'm not an expert in how brains work at all, but it does seem odd to me that we saw a scene of BMO doing both voices when every other time Football is shown they do the mirror thing with the camera cutting back and forth between BMO and the mirror as if they are two separate entities 🤷♀️ Like, like BMOs reflection is talking to him. Like in horror movies where the reflection doesn't match the person, I thought Football was kinda like that, a sentient reflection 🤷♀️ But after the toilet scene I knew it wasn't that, like, Football is something in BMOs head, Football is not actually alive inside the mirror in any literal sense
@Blackbird74733 Жыл бұрын
@@HeadCasey yeah, it's not too widely understood in my experience. I do find it strange that they chose to stylize Football as existing only in the mirror, then abandoning that in the toilet scene. my best guess is that Football was interpreted as a sort of mirror dimension BMO by fans, and the creators changed it because they didn't intend that interpretation. it is known (and actually common) to be able to have multiple identity states conscious at the same time. that's called coconsciousness. they also often have conversations with each other while coconscious, often mentally but sometimes out loud. I assume the mirror is just a helpful visualization tool for them (and the audience on a more meta level), but it isn't required. identity states also alternate control of the body, which is called switching. it's common to have a sort of visualized world that an identity experiences existing in when another is in control. I interpret the mirror world as being their own version of this. the topic of Bubble is an interesting one. you could interpret Bubble as an imaginary friend, a hallucination, or a physical entity. you could even argue that Bubble is a third identity. external visualization of an identity state is possible, though not exactly common in my experience. I wouldn't argue for that interpretation, but it's possible. I actually argue that Finn could have similar dissociative experiences, or at least represent them in some way. *note on terminology: I'm trying to use neutral and intuitive sounding terms to make my argument easier to digest, but I'll include a small glossary for anyone who wants to know the correct language to use. someone who has multiple identities - system the quality of having multiple identities - plurality, systemhood the individual identities - system member, headmate, system mate, alter (alter is used by some people but not universally) to be in control of the body - front to change who is in control of the body - switch a mental location visitable by identities - headspace, inner world (note this isn't exclusive to systems, but systems experience it more commonly)

I’d always assumed that like many other season 1/2 episodes it is dubiously canon at best. There’s a lot of instances where something that should be world changing happens offhand in an early episode like the multiple times Finn and Jake get access to some sort of magic. Of course it can be fun to theorize on how these episodes could be canon, but functionally speaking, in the writer’s room I’m fairly sure they’re just not

@@HeadCasey yes they do make reference to a lot of earlier episodes but also a lot of the stuff that happened before the writers had a well established world explicitly doesn’t come back ever. Like it’s pretty safe to say that Finn and Jake don’t have magic powers from the episode Wizard (Every time I rewatch it I’m surprised at the lack of indication that they lost their magic powers at the end, they just stop using them). Similarly, though it easily could be canon, there’s never any reference to that episode about Finn and Jake looking for cool armor which also incidentally has magic powers. And probably most damningly, the treehouse is surely never ripped from the ground and absolutely torn apart by a massive slug (and I should really hope not because that kinda makes that strong emotional beat in the finale a lot less impactful). The slug does put the tree house back in the end but it is still visibly destroyed and in later episodes the tree is seen to be very much alive and rooted into the ground. Also, while it is a fun idea that the guest animated episodes are alternate realities, the fully guess animated episodes (a glitch is a glitch, bad jubies, food chain, and water park prank) are all distinctly noncanon.
@HeadCasey Жыл бұрын
@@frimi8593 1. Finn still has magic. He uses it to make fire in the first Banana Man episode. 2. They still have the armour, it's seen as Easter egg in their treehouse in later episodes. 3. The treehouse is often destroyed and put back together. The magic repairs to the treehouse are easily explained away by Jake's imagination powers. As soon as he imagines that "the treehouse is fine now" suddenly it is. 4. Just because it didn't happen to "our Finn and Jake" doesn't mean that guest animated episodes "didn't happen" because they did totally happen in the multiverse, that's literally the entire point of the Beyond the Grotto episode, so show that portals to "guest animated worlds" do actually exist.

Be sad for BMO, after it's adventures with finn and jake, it has left itself in sleep mode. You can see by the absence of artifacts not relating to it's time with finn and jake. Everything in its room is only from the time it spent with finn and jake. Nothing else exists except its fake beard.

@@FrancisR420 I don't know, Fionna and Cake spoilers - dead world BMO still being alive and normal after the moment where Jerry-Lich magically killed all life across that entire universe implies that BMO was/is not truly "alive" and has no "soul" as such, which means that regardless how life-like we viewed BMO during the show - it truly was just a life-less robot the entire time. NEPTR was a "real boy" in that sense, a true soul. Genuinely "alive" due to the magical events of his creation. For BMO, this is not the case. Not born of magic or biology, but created to be a self-aware machine that has an active imagination. Beyond the Grotto is noncanon, like all the guest animation episodes. Also shows from Season 1 and 2 arent REALLY fully canon (as the writers werent really focusing on plot like that). I like the touch on BMO being imaginative, but im not a huge fan of the bmo is "evil" thing.
@HeadCasey Жыл бұрын
Beyond the Grotto is Canon. The episode literally starts and ends in normal animated Ooo with a specific portal leading to the place with the guest animated stuff. Also all the guest animated episodes are canon to the multiverse. Just because they didn't happen to "our Finn and Jake" doesn't mean they didn't still happen, as proven by Farm World. As for season 1 and 2 being "non-canon" well actually if it was in the show, then it was canon. I have decent answers to every question that connects the mysteries of the early seasons to the later canon of the show. So you don't get to simply decide that entire episodes aren't canon just because you don't understand how they fit the narrative.
