BMP-3, TOS-1A & More l Ukraine Using Captured Russian Weapons To Attack Putin’s Forces Amid War

A video of Ukrainian soldiers using Russian-made BMP-3 tracked armored vehicle was recently published by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Ukrainian forces are using these vehicles to fight off the Russian army which originally owned them. Russian armored vehicles are not the only weapon Ukraine is using against Putin’s invading forces. Earlier, Ukrainian forces captured a batch of intact Russian missiles and fired them back at Russian troops on May 22.

In the comment section, there is a war going on between pro-Russian and pro-Ukraine supporters. Please wear body armor and mind the salt at all times. In all major wars, both sides captured equipment and used it against their enemies. Nothing new. T-62 is an ancient tank but can still guard already occupied areas behind the frontlines, is immune to small arms, and can still be used to bust bunkers, fortifications from a few km or shoot down APCs, and IFVs from stationary positions. I do not know if it can be retrofitted with stabilizers(fire on the move) and composite armor and era and night vision and rangefinders and many"new" stuff. But normally even the dirt-cheap well-known famous RPG-7 can penetrate its frontal armor. T 62 cannon is still sufficient against the Leopard 1/A5(which has crap armor). Any newer tank outclasses T-62 in everything especially in effective armor thickness due to composite and ERA and maybe other protection systems and fire on the move accuracy.

What are u talking about. USA sent mig29 su27. S300. Poland t55 and t72 tanks.slavakia sent su27 su25 and s300 Germany sent Leppard 1 tanks,gepard anti aircraft. Italy sent advanced heavy artillery USA has sent m777 heavy artillery with MLRS rocket systems on the way. Ukraine has received nothing but advanced heavy wepons. And this is the tip of the iceberg I could list hundreds of advanced weaponry sent to Ukraine. They need it. And have received it.

Yes the former cis countries have supplied some Soviet era armored vehicles, a lot more than Germany sent I’m sure, but have they sent enough? Germany, 10 or 12 BMP 1 that were given back from Finland, 8 Gepards, no Leopard 1s yet. America has sent the most Guns 90 M777, 15 HIPS, 200 M113s, majority of Javlins, Stingers and other items. Other western countries some guns, 50 ish 113s, a few SP 155s, small arms, etc. but not enough. Some of that limited number will be destroyed before it gets to combat and others will be destroyed in combat. But how many hundreds if not thousands of older Leopards, AMX30s, M109s, assorted APCs are rusting away in France and Germany Depots? How much American war stock is setting idle in Germany? The Russian solders maybe incompetent and untrained and their officers may suck, but there starting to drag the older systems out of depots and have thousands of more everything. Sending enough equipment to man one or two brigades isn’t enough and once Ukrainians equipment breaks or they run out of ammo, Russias not going to sell them anymore.

To not go so far back, the Nazi Germany due to their limited industrial output since the start of WWII enlisted whatever fell in their hands from French, Czechoslovak and Russian tanks ... including a few B-17 bombers downed, not only for analisis and testing to find weak-points; but to afterwards fly them to alleviate the Luftwaffe's chronic lack of strategic bombing capacity. Of the few units captured or abandoned, we only have visual confirmation of one intact with its rockets loaded, ready to fire; others may be functional but empty. The barrage rocket recharges are carried in separate tracked vehicles with cranes (all use surplus T72 chasis). This is legacy equipment, firing dumb 200 mm short range (6 Km max) range rockets, so UA should not have no problem, as they also use soviet Smerch which is a more proper 12x300 mm MLRS with more complex rockets. TOS was developed to provide front-line a short range capacity as Smerch is more bulky and complex for front line/short range use. Another issue is if worth to develop for so few units. I would say no; but in view that US POTUS seems to consider, at least for now, not sending HIMARS ... they may have to reconsider. The advantage of simplicity it can be shop build with some mature machinery, propellant and explosives; but not requiring complex installations requiring large factory floor space.

I'd be careful with using captured weapons. Captured vehicles might be fine....but I wouldn't use any of the captured small arms and ammunition. I bet the Russians sabotaged every 5th bullet to misfire or injure who ever uses it.
