1 series M coupe all the way for me. It reminds me of the e30 bmw 325 my mate owned back in the late 80's that really got me excited about driving. It's squat and muscular. For me the best M car to date!

The cayman R has been regarded by many road car reviewers, and racing drivers alike as "the best handling road car i have ever driven." not cornering speed, grip or power but HANDLING, this is important! however, the same road testers love the 1M, and although it may not be quite as composed as the cayman, as a package, it has it licked in terms of daily use. buyers discretion could only decide the better of these 2 cars. both awesome in their own right. but i'd have the porsche ;)

I don't care which one is actually better, I know which one I want. It starts with a "P" and ends with an "orsche." Cars like this aren't bought for numbers, they're bought because they do something special for you inside. The Porsche does that for me (as do almost all Porsches) and the BMW doesn't. The fact that the Porsche is better makes it all the better.

@radar3699 Have you driven the Cayman R yet?? I have both and the Cayman R with PDK just out run, out handle and out corner the M1. The M1 is more comfortable and with much more luxury interior design than the Cayman R.
@993mike13 жыл бұрын
While I do love M cars and have an e92 M3 street car and a fully track prep'd '95 e36 M3, the Cayman R handling is just so magic right out of the box. I've only had one for a month, but a mountain drive in it is pure joy. With a few small planned modifications it should make a great track day car. The 1M and the R are both terrific - we are all fortunate to have so many great enthusiast cars available today at so many price levels.
@Alert6411 жыл бұрын
The 1M is really (really!) fast in a straight line, but on a twisty road in the wet you cannot push it too hard in the real world because it does not instill confidence in those conditions. There is more to a fast car than drifting, unfortunately much of the press evaluates these cars on how much fun you can have in controlled private conditions not in the real world on a wet road with pot holes which is just about the common case in the UK.

Easier said than done. It is not always about the power to weight ratio, it is about proper weight distribution. That is what gives a car proper handling. So far Porsche had been able to do the handling part seamlessly.

@rock3tcat Couldn't agree with you more. A manual makes you pay more attention, you can stick in the gear you want around a corner and feather the clutch, throttle, and brakes to make it fly on the exit. I'm sure there are good points to a DSG but I just haven't seen them. Give me a good manual and I will be happy, I think I would be bored in anything else.

Don't know what everyone is complaining about. I was briefly cross-shopping both cars. The Cayman is a sports car benchmark, so they compare cars that have sporting intentions (if not out-and-out sports cars) to it all the time. The point is that if they get close to the Cayman in terms of driving pleasure but offer added practicality, they're good cars. As is the case here. However, if you were choosing your SECOND car, then the Cayman R is the obvious choice.
@fctsui5713 жыл бұрын
@BI2016 You are absolutely right. It is no big deal owning a BMW and a Cayman R in the United States. I think if I am living in Hong Kong or anywhere in Asia, I probably can't afford them. We are lucky living in the United States, you don't need to be rich to drive great automobiles. A friend of mine, he is working in Oracle, he has two Lamborghini (Diablo and LP640) one Aston Martin DB9 and a Vipier.

@TheRighteous123 I own a Cayman S and the boots are surprisingly big, I'd say bigger than most hatchbacks - you've got one in the front that a person could sit in, and one at the back that could happily take a suitcase or two. I take your point though, 2 more seats and £12,000 is probably enough to push most people towards the 1M.

@toeboe106 - problem is, cars that rev their nuts off at sufficient RPMs to make decent power are getting harder to get past the various emissions around the globe. That's why many manufacturers, including BMW, are migrating from high-revving engines to turbocharging to get more power.

@rock3tcat no, i absolutely understand why automatics are being favored in the top end exotics like lamborghinis and ferraris. at that price, what matters most is technology and speed. a dsg can go around a track like the nurburgring literally as much as 10-12 seconds faster than a manual alternative. however, that being said, cars like BMW M should always be offered with at least the option of a manual, because i feel that cars like this are more for driver enjoyment than stats.
@petrolhead22913 жыл бұрын
@Turbulence654321 I see your point, but it really isn't relative here. I would understand if the cars were £200,000 or something, but £12,000 is 33% more than the 1M asking price, and what do you get for that? Slightly better chassis, slightly better steering, but less gear and slower straight line speed? Seriously doesn't add up here.
@EYE50MM13 жыл бұрын
The 1 ///M simply a delight to see in motion. It is really subjective to driving styles when choosing between the 2. I think that for BMW drivers that drive hard and like their fun RAW the 1 ///M is the obvious choice. Not that we aren't or can't be delicate, we don't want to be precisely refined. I'm a hooligan when I get behind the wheel, I don't want things to be lovely and graceful like the Cayman R, that isn't how I get my kicks. I need it to be rough and brutal like the 1///M.
@sandy2812199013 жыл бұрын
@rock3tcat You know whats sad? you say this now but there's a total of maybe 3 or so manual supercars (500+bhp) in the market today. Noble m600, porsche 911, corvette zr1, last dealer model vipers. i'm out. can you think of any others?

Hmmm, even though I'm not really a fan of the design of the Cayman (don't really like the 1M either though), I think I'd still choose that, I think it's a lot more nimble and more fun to drive. The 1M looks heavy just looking at it, I think it's stupid that BMW keeps comparing it with the E30 M3.

@ autocar -- I don't watch many of your videos but here is a little constructive criticism that I think most will agree with: don't compare a MR car that you wouldn't see on anything less than a sunny summer day with a luxury sport coup designed for those that want a great daily driver that they can take to the track on the weekends. Those two cars are in completely different genres, I don't know why you compared them.

@xsnipersgox I suppose you can interpret "SCARY" as twitchy, if, I don't know why you would but I guess you can think that. No where in the video does he say the 1 ///M does unexpected SCARY things he just says it doesn't perform maneuvers as graceful and "LOVELY" as the swan like Cayman R. But that is the thing, It is a different animal altogether and it takes a different type of driver to enjoy what it has to offer. It takes more skill and work to drive RAW SCARY cars like the 1///M.Subjective

@coolerdude44 So you're saying people who buy Lamborghini or Ferrari are only interested in lap times? When I'm buying an exotic I want something that I enjoy driving and as good as the latest dsg's are they don't involve you like a manual. The only reason I never owned an M3 CSL was no manual option. Auto's are great for bragging numbers or if you're too lazy to shift but they're shit for enjoyment.

Is this Cayman R the de-tuned UK version? In the Autocar magazine of 25th May, this Cayman is listed as having 228 g/km CO2. This is strange because the UK spec car only has 221 g/km CO2. To lower the emissions Porsche have replaced the throttle cable with a piece of elastic. I should know, I drive one. Its detail like this that make reviews like this utter tosh. Beware, because what you see is not what you get.

I love Porsche BMW. I don't like auto critics however because they are always going side with those two automakers. Yes, they are probably the best overall but whenever theres a side-by-side comparison that involves either Porsche or BMW, ONE ALWAYS WINS. I've never seen a BMW or a porsche lose any kind of comparison. When it comes to sports cars it's mostly to do with preference, which can't guide a review but still should have some bearing on a review as opposed to 100% stats.
