Insane, isn't it! They are so in demand that anyone who owns one now can sell it for more than they bought it for. We looked up nationwide 1Ms for sale and all were listed for more than the original MSRP.

The 1 series backseat is actually quite usable. My family of three go in trips in it all the time, and full size adults fit back there for short to medium trips. My 911's backseat was considerably less usable.

Great video guys. I am an E90 M3 owner, but I really like the 1M. I truly believe that the 1M is the real successor to the E46 M3. The problem with the 1M is the price premium you will have to pay to get one. And for the money the Mustang is a great value. Good cars all around... going to go wash my M3 now.
@gt_grandtouring11 жыл бұрын
I'd pick the 1M over the M3 too. The 1M is a reincarnation of the old M3 which is why I like it so much.

Ditched an M3, my 5th BMW for the Boss, ordered sight unseen. At first the lack of refinement made me doubt my decision, but 4 years on, a tonne of track day with No Issues (Can't say that about any Bimmer I've owned), the only cars I would swap for, maybe, are a 911 GT3 or the new GT350R. Already I've owned this car longer than any since my first '69 Cougar over 30 years ago, and it looks like I may never part with it.

Great question. We generally consider price (watch our Golf R comparison). But the 1M is a bit of an oddball - new it was cheaper than an M3, but skewed terribly because of supply and demand. As far as maintenance costs go, we don't avoid it but we don't focus on it either: Drive great cars hard and they cost you money... you have to pay to play! We believe that spending money on a car you love is worth it - but everyone's budget and tolerance varies. Thanks for watching and liking what we do!
@Crankkthatchris11 жыл бұрын
For those complaining about the price, it's completely worth paying for . I own an e92 335i m sport and it drives amazing. I've also driven the 1m, as It May start at 48k the price will continue to increase even if its used just because its limited. Look at the price now, they are around 70k

I Recently bought a 1m sport 2 door convertible 118d factory 140 bhp with 221 ft/lb torque and had a stage 1 BMW remap which boosted it by 43% = 201 BHP and 316 ft/lb torque or; 429 n/m torque, and, it transformed the car for £300. now I know that's not a huge amount of power but it's very close to the figures from the 1m 123 m sport=204 bhp and 295 lb/ft torque or, 400 n/m torque depending how it's measured. an option well worth considering. The 1m is a great car to drive with proper hydraulic steering response and all the M trim and build quality you can expect from a BMW. + The open-air touring, I love the styling of both the coupe and the convertible. I was never a fan of most BMW models until the 1m Sport. now I love them.

A Huge THANKS for saying that! We do work very hard to make TV quality production for the web, and we do it cheaper than just about anyone. The show began completely self funded, and now makes enough to cover some of the expenses. We've spoken to Velocity and others but so far none of the appropriate channels want an honest car show. Unless that changes, we will continue making stuff for the web... and with sponsors and more cash we will keep this quality and make them faster. Thanks again!

Great reviews. I'm a Boss owner and you guys nailed it. I've driven an M3 and it is a wonderful car but I'm more of a muscle car guy. Too me the "rawness" of the Boss is what makes it great. The problem with the 1M coupe is the price. Whenever I manage to see one of these for sale, its priced way over the sticker price when it was new. Its priced at the same price as a BRAND NEW M3 if not even more! And to me nothing is going to sound better than a V8 that has a redline of 8400 RPM. So it would have to be the M3 for me. Keep up the awesome show guys!

Awesome review guys. Love your work and you nailed it. As an ex E46 M3 owner and a current 1M owner, you nailed it. The Boss is a great car too, but just not there on the refinement just yet. The 1M in my opinion is what the new M3 should have been. Back to the roots. Old fashioned 6MT (no fancy dual clutch stuff here) and a whole lot of fun. BTW, didn't even get the NAV as it gets in the way!

Actually, I see lots of excellent examples of the 1M for a tinch more than $50K, with under 50K on the clock. One with 12K is no doubt worth $60K. MY personal, economical choice is a 128i with the 6-speed, which while lacking some of the speed, shares many of the same dynamics of the 1M (can't afford an M Car quite yet, but when I can...). In any case, for me, it's the dynamics that matter most. I like to drive; I don't care THAT much about the actual numbers.

great video once again. I salute you. Just 2 minor additions: I think the 1M is more what the M3 used to be in it's early days. If you compare it to the original E30 M3, it's much more like it: a small, sporty, easy to toss around BMW. The problem I've got with it: Too small for your only car, and too ordinary for a fun/enthusiast car. And the other one: You can get almost the same engine in an 135i - I'm not sure if it was sold in the US - but if it is, you can save a lot compared to the 1M.

I find it amusing that EDD's first M3 vid helped actually helped me decide to go with the M3 (never having driven one) but I was also considering the Mustang (had driven) at the time. Then about a year later this comparo pops up. In the end I'm certain I made the right choice for me. Now I'm sure I wouldn't have been unhappy with the Boss, I'm also sure that I'm happier with the M.

Just something about 4 door sport sedan with v8's that just makes me all jittery inside...

Well in all fairness to the Cobra, the Euro-Spec E36 had only 286 hp up until the '97 model year, at which time it made the near 40 hp jump (proportioning the torque gain to the hp gain, approximately). The US spec E36's, as you said, maintained 240 hp pretty indefinitely over the E36 M3 lifespan, though I think there may have been like a 10 or 15 hp jump to like 250. I think part of the thing between these two cars is, not outright beat one another, but put them on level grounds to compete.

The problem I have with the Boss 302 is that you pay a premium for a car that does drive better, but is basically a base model Mustang as far as equipment goes. I would pay more for either BMW to get a nicer interior and more equipment. Not to mention the more premium brand.

Great vid guys, as usual. Do you take price (and running costs) into account when doing a comparison? Example, 1M is now priced way above the other two, and while the M3 can be got for Mustang money ownership costs would be significantly higher on the M3. Considering the Mustang came so close to the M3 but would be cheaper to maintain - when you pick the M car over the Mustang do you take that into account?

The next question I have to pose is this... is this based on a US or Euro spec E36 M3? The Euro spec has quite a bit more power than a US spec. This is an honest question as I really don't know, nor can I find a comparison between the Euro-E36 and the Cobra. The Euro E36 makes 321 hp and 286 ft lb in 97+, so not quite the Cobra in torque, but it does sport better gearing, brakes and several other things I can't name off my head. I wont bring up other special e36 M3s because its no fair.

The one benefit of owning the Mustang is it's pretty indestructable, if something does break it's a pretty cheap fix compared to the BMW. If I were buying for the long term it would be the Boss. If I was going to own a car for the length of a warranty, the 1M looks like a lot of fun. The Mustang's exhaust would drive me a bit nuts after a while. I'd reinstall the side pipe baffle.

I think this goes for allot for were in the world you are.. Those from the US would most likely go for the Boss 302 (Don't blame you guys!), and those from EU would go for the Bimmers, same for myself, I would take the M1 any day over those 3 cars... I cant see the Boss 302 defeat the M1 or the M3 on a racetrack, the M1 is known to beat Ferrari's... I cant see the Boss 302 do that at all... But hey, maybe they actually have made a car that do traction and handling much better on this 302, I have only driven a i135 and a M3 so I cant really know or tell other vice... But one thing for sure, they are great cars all of them! Great review guys!

@traumadynamics726910 жыл бұрын
Hey guys, given that the 1M is ridiculously pricey, how far off is the regular 135i from the M3 (or the 1M)? Meaning, would it only take some suspension mods and a tune to make the standard 1 series feel like the 1M?
@darksamurai7310 жыл бұрын
Not far at all, especially if you pay COBB Tuning a visit, the 1m even uses the earlier 135i engine, the 2011 and up had a newer twin scroll turbo engine instead of twin turbo.
@ryanthomastew10 жыл бұрын
Jasan Allen Saj Razvi The 1M isn't just an engine tune and suspension - it's a whole host of M3 goodies meshed into the 1 series body. Here is a more comprehensive list of items on the 1M that make it what it is: M3 suspension architecture (this isn't just a coil-over kit - we're talking control arms, links, bushings etc right from M3) M3 steering mechanism. This is a HUGE part of the 'feel' of the 1M that makes it so special. Completely different feel from a stock 135i. M3 six-speed manual gearbox with a limited slip differential. 135i's don't have the Limited slip diff and thus putting power down to the ground hard in both straight line and corning situations won't be as good as a 1M. M3 brakes Big, Bold body work to accommodate the 19" M3 Competition wheels M3 Side Mirrors ///M Steering Wheel There is no question you could take a 135i and make it "faster" than a 1M with a COBB Stage III upgrade. However you're still going to be missing the steering feel, Limited Slip Diff,Full M3 suspension bits and badass flared body work of the 1M. Final note to remember. Tuned 135i will depreciate. 1M is appreciating as we sit here.
@SnipinCatz9 жыл бұрын
Ryan II A 135i is faster than a 1M with a JB4 alone. You don't need anything as drastic as a COBB Stage 3. The 1M is appreciating because they sold a mere 740 in the US. That also means that actually buying one is going to mean you're paying an extra 25k used with the same mileage for things you could do to a 135i for much less than that. You could probably do a full 1M conversion for under 10k if you do most of the work yourself. - You can get an M3 steering rack from a salvage yard, they're quite a bit pricier for sale. Let's say you buy one online just as a worst case scenario, it's 1.7k. - You can get the full body kit aftermarket. Fenders, side skirts, .for around 2.5k Let's say you sand it and do the assembly yourself and you're at 3.5k painted at the most and that allows you to mount the larger tires that get more grip. - M3 suspension is 1.4k from HP Autowerks. - M3 LSD is 1.8k. - M steering wheel is on the M-Sport 135i. - N55 135i has the same manual six speed gearbox. - Totals to 8.4k and it'll match the performance of a 1M. This is assuming you do the assembly yourself on everything. All the feel of the 1M, fraction of the price. That would be my list for a conversion. The M3 brakes are a 3 meter difference in stopping distance from 250kph but offer less brake feel. Not worth it IMO. Keep in mind you don't have to spend that 8.4k on the BMW parts. You can get both better performance and cheaper parts by going for aftermarket parts not on the 1M. There are slightly better aftermarket LSDs, and much better aftermarket brakes. And now you have 15+k burning a whole in your pocket to do better things with. The 1M is great if you got it on day one, after that it's a worse and worse deal as far as the car itself is concerned. the 1M started at 46k on day 1, now it's frequently up at 90+k, cheapest I've seen was around 56k or so.
@ryanthomastew9 жыл бұрын
SnipinCatz You're still making my point for me. The 1M is more than just a tune and suspension. It's a good list of parts that will take the skilled DIY'er at least $10,000 to complete and the non-DIY type closer to $15,000 with labor to get it all done. (BTW: You forgot to include the cost of M Comp 19" Wheels, 19" tires, interior custom stitching/alcantara, tuning parts-software (COBB or JB4), and exhaust which is all probably another $3-4k). You still need to buy a 135i which is going to be around $20,000 for a relatively lower mileage example. So you're into the 1M clone for around $35,000 - $40,000. I looked on Autotrader and there are quite a few low mileage 1M's going for upper $40k and mid $50k region. The only $100k example is the Dinan tuned 1M of which there is currently just one out there right now. There were a couple in the upper $60k region because they were extremely low mile examples. So yes you could copy the 1M and save $15k-$25k today. However the clone will depreciate and an original 1M will maintain value or increase. No loss incurred when you go to sell it. But again the cost isn't my point. The 1M was more than suspension and a tune.

Ryan II I didn't include plenty of small things. My list was the performance aspect and anything that could have an impact on feel and that's it. It's not about making a clone, but rather a 135i that is comparable in feel and performance to a 1M. That is what he asked. Personally I wouldn't purchase Alcantara trim, it's a bit...meh. The 135i M Sport has M wheels, they're just 18 inch and narrower vs 19 inch because of the larger and wider fenders on the 1M. You can sell the M BMW wheels and buy new aftermarket 1M dimension wheels for a couple hundred extra. You're in to 32k in a 135i where you would otherwise be into over 50k in a equivalent mileage 1M. That's another car sized difference. And I didn't spend the money perfectly so to speak, I just copied everything from the 1M. It's not like the 1M parts are the optimal price/performance for a 135i. The 1M isn't 'much' more than a collectible suspension and a tune. Compare the difference between the 1M/135i and the 335i/ M3. Many people don't even consider the 1M to be a 'true' M car because they didn't do anything serious to the engine. It's just a bunch of M3 bits from the parts bin. There is no guarantee that the 1M holds it's price. It's a limited production run, not a classic. And if it doesn't hold then you've just lost a lot of money, it's a big risk considering the price is kept artificially high. Not to mention modding it is not an option if you want it to keep that same value, same with adding miles to it, every 30k miles seems to be worth about 10% of the price of the car. The people gaining money on it right now are selling it with very few miles, and it's untouched. The ones for sale right now are garage queens.

Why they did not equip it with DCT when it is available in two other models with the N54. So sad.

in L.A., i was on the freeway(91) the other night and I saw headlights in my rearview mirror that quickly disappeared and then all i heard was the sound and the blur of the 1M passing by. i was like "oh shit". i was going 75 and the 1M was probably doing its top speed and the thing just zoomed by. u might ask how i know it's a 1M? i caught up to it. no my car isn't that fast lol. they were at the red light at the end of the freeway. i was like fuggg. then i became a bigger fan of the car :)
