The SOS call system failure error (D916C3) in your BMW 2 Series can be troublesome, especially if it reappears shortly after clearing it with diagnostic tools like BimmerLink. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue: ### Steps to Troubleshoot and Resolve the SOS Call System Failure: 1. **Check Battery Connections**: - Ensure that the new battery is correctly installed and that all connections are tight and secure. Loose or improper connections can cause various electronic issues. 2. **Reset the SOS Module**: - Sometimes the SOS module itself may need a reset. Disconnect the car battery for about 15 minutes to reset the module and then reconnect it. 3. **Check for Software Updates**: - Ensure that your car’s software is up-to-date. Sometimes, software updates can fix underlying issues related to the SOS system. 4. **Inspect Wiring and Connectors**: - Inspect the wiring and connectors related to the SOS system. Look for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections that could cause intermittent faults. 5. **Check the Telematics Control Unit (TCU)**: - The issue might be with the Telematics Control Unit (TCU). Ensure that it is functioning properly and receiving power. 6. **Genuine Parts**: - As noted in your query, using genuine parts is crucial. Ensure that all parts related to the SOS system, including the battery, are genuine BMW parts. Non-genuine parts can sometimes cause compatibility issues. 7. **Clear Fault Codes Properly**: - After performing the above checks, clear the fault codes again using BimmerLink or a similar diagnostic tool. Ensure that the car is in a stable state (not driving or moving) when you clear the codes. 8. **Seek Professional Help**: - If the issue persists after the above steps, it might be necessary to consult a professional. An authorized BMW service center can perform more in-depth diagnostics and repairs. ### Potential Professional Solutions: - **Telematics Control Unit (TCU) Replacement**: If the TCU is faulty, it may need to be replaced. This is often best done by a professional, as it involves coding and programming. - **Software Reflash or Reprogramming**: Sometimes a reflash or complete reprogramming of the vehicle’s software might be required to resolve persistent errors. - **Detailed Diagnostic Scan**: A detailed diagnostic scan with professional-grade equipment can provide more insight into the root cause of the issue, beyond what consumer-grade tools can offer. ### Preventive Measures: - **Regular Maintenance**: Regularly check and maintain the electrical system of your vehicle to prevent such issues. - **Use Genuine Parts**: Always use genuine BMW parts for replacements to ensure compatibility and reliability. By following these steps, you should be able to identify and resolve the SOS call system failure in your BMW 2 Series. If the problem continues, professional diagnosis and repair will likely be necessary.

I had it replaced on my 218d but it's still showing the message, don't know if garage read out any faults. Does it need to be coded

If the SOS call system failure message (fault code B7F341) persists even after replacement on your BMW 218d, it suggests that the issue may not be fully resolved. Here are a few steps to consider: 1. **Check for Fault Codes**: Ensure the garage reads any stored fault codes in the car’s system. This can provide specific information about what might still be causing the issue. 2. **Coding and Programming**: Yes, it might need to be coded. In many modern BMWs, certain components require coding to the vehicle after replacement. This means the new part needs to be programmed to communicate properly with the vehicle’s other systems. Ensure the garage uses the appropriate BMW diagnostic and programming tools, such as ISTA (Integrated Service Technical Application). 3. **Software Updates**: Sometimes, an SOS system fault can be due to outdated software. Make sure the vehicle’s software is up to date. This can also be done using ISTA or by visiting a BMW dealership. 4. **Check Installation**: Verify that the replacement was installed correctly. Incorrect installation can sometimes cause the system to malfunction. 5. **Wiring and Connectors**: Inspect the wiring and connectors related to the SOS system. Any loose connections, damaged wires, or corroded connectors can cause faults. 6. **Battery Health**: Low battery voltage or a failing battery can sometimes trigger electronic faults. Ensure the vehicle’s battery is in good health. It would be best to take your car to a BMW dealership or a certified BMW specialist who has the proper tools and expertise to diagnose and fix the issue correctly. They can read out any fault codes, perform necessary coding, and update the vehicle's software if required.

TY for the video. Is there a way to just erase the warning message without replacing the battery?

You're welcome for the video, It seems like you're asking about a warning message related to a BMW communication battery, and you want to know if there's a way to erase the warning message without replacing the battery. In general, warning messages related to vehicle components, such as batteries, are usually generated by the car's onboard computer system (ECU) to alert you to potential issues. Simply erasing the warning message won't necessarily fix the underlying problem. If you're seeing a warning message related to the communication battery in your BMW, it's important to address the issue to ensure that your vehicle functions properly. Ignoring a warning message related to a critical component like a battery can lead to more serious problems down the road. Here are some steps you can take: Check the Battery: Start by checking the condition of the communication battery. If it's old or not functioning correctly, replacing it may be necessary. Batteries have a limited lifespan, and if they're not holding a charge, they can cause communication issues in modern vehicles. Perform a Battery Reset: Some vehicles have a procedure for resetting the battery warning message after a new battery is installed. Check your owner's manual or contact a BMW dealership or service center for guidance on how to perform a reset if you've recently replaced the battery. Scan for Fault Codes: Use a diagnostic scanner or OBD-II reader to scan for fault codes in the vehicle's computer system. This can help identify the specific issue causing the warning message. If the issue is something other than the battery itself, you'll need to address that underlying problem. Visit a BMW Service Center: If you're not comfortable diagnosing or fixing the issue yourself, it's advisable to take your BMW to a certified BMW service center or mechanic who specializes in BMW vehicles. They have the tools and expertise to diagnose and address the problem correctly. Remember that safety is a priority when it comes to vehicle maintenance. Ignoring warning messages or attempting to erase them without addressing the underlying issues can lead to unsafe driving conditions and potentially more expensive repairs in the long run. Always prioritize the proper maintenance and repair of your vehicle to ensure its safety and reliability

You can change battery. But warning light will remain little while. Better to use scan tool and check what is the faulty code ? Before repair

Is it the same procedure for a 2018 X1?

I sure hope so, cause that's the exact same battery I just bought online a few minutes ago. I figure even if I go buy the tools to take the panels off, and the equipment to clear the codes, it will still be far less expensive than the $900 than the dealership charges. I have a 2018 X1 with only 40k miles on it, and just watched another video where a guy changed one out in 15 minutes from start to finish.

@@user-np1xf7rn7w I will say though, that while it did resolve my battery issue and I was able to clear that specific code, that now I also apparently have another issue with the Satelite radio amplifier and so the light is still on my dash. It's just on for a different code now. Aggravating for vehicle with only 43k miles on it.
