LUK LF30 Power Steering Pump: amzn.to/2vesi0f
I had a vibration that I wasn't able to pinpoint but I also had some pulley noise which I traced back to the power steering pump. So I went ahead and switch it out with a used unit that I pulled from a junkyard. That solved the noise.
The pump I had already was the LF-30, which is the later model pump. The earlier pump was the LF-20 and that had a shaft that would shear off and make the pump fail, so it's definitely a good idea to replace those with the LF-30. The two pumps have different pressure lines so you will have to change that as well.
The BMW part number for the updated LF-30 pressure line is: 32416764725

Dear 50s Kid, I realize you have a disclaimer that says your videos are for entertainment only but I thought you should know that I am very greatful to you. I’m a single mom with a very tight budget (as in ramen daily) type of budget. I have a 2003 BMW 325i which’s getting old just like me and if (sadly) regularly has something go wrong with it. Just last night I drove out to pick up my son and my power steering pump died. Car started shaking when turning the steering wheel, no power steering and I freaked! I watched several videos trying to determine the cause and once I decided it was the pump, I watched this video on its replacement. This morning we walked to the store, picked up the pump, fluid and clamp. A few hours and a terribly sore back later, my car is fixed. Just so you know, this is not the first time your videos have saved my car. 😁😁😁😁😁

I just replaced my power steering pump and noticed that the striped bracket bolt you are referring to in your video requires a washer in order for it to fit properly in the bolt housing. If you don't use a washer the (to long) bolt will hit the back of the housing and will strip or fell like its stripped when it pops backward one thread. Where the washer goes during repair is unknown..lol (The repair was successful and made a unbelievable difference LF20 LUK)

First of all just want to say thanks for all the amazing videos, you truly have helped me immensly and I know lots of others. Couple things I ran into on mine that threw me a bit and I'm not sure if mine was some weird anamoly or due to a bolt head being sheared off. When I got to the step of actually removing the pump I saw only the 13mm bolt head on the left side. There was no bold head on the right side. Looking from the back I could see what appears to be an inverted torx nut? Are some built like this or would that be a way to fix the bolt head being sheared off? Reason I ask is according to a online step by step article you remove the back bracket bolt and then remove the right side of the front bracket bolt from the rear-but it was a regular 13mm bolt head not an inverted torx. Did not have any inverted torx sockets so I just removed the pump by taking out the 3 torx bolts on front, and since the shaft was completely sheared off pump was very easy to get out. I sure hope the shaft on this new pump is more substantial, OEM immer was out of the AE pump that is supposed to be beefier. Also my back bracket was the type with only one bolt on to the pump, is that because mine is an LF 20, back bracket is different on LF 30? I am definitely gonna swap my hydraulic tensioner for the manual one also. Thanks again, it worked out great!

Anyway, in reference to this specific video, I also stripped that stupid little bolt on the power steering pump and I have to do the oil pan gasket change soon. How did you ever fix it? I have looked on Realoem.com and the bolt size is 8mm so the next size is 9mm but impossible to find. Thanks, and keep doin' what you're doin"!

You can get the tool off amazon for $20 for the BMW quick disconnects, it takes about 2 seconds to get it off. Also, make sure when you fill the fluid, leave the belt off and turn the pump by hand and turn the wheel back and forth before starting the engine.

Thanks in advance

You probably have the LF20. The shaft shears off on those. If you take your belt off and just try pulling the pulley out from the pump--you will know right away if it's broken off. Don't pull it all the way out or your fluid will leak all over the place.

I went with a euro approved power steering fluid that is approved for my car because a mechanic told me too.Not sure if he was wrong and its the wrong fluid or i was sold a bad pump.Is there a way to check the only thing i can think of is flush it and try ATF.Ive check online, check manual and called BMW i got no were.Another mechanic said he thought he seen micro flakes in the reservoir tank. Thanks again i just replaced my fuel filter and fuel pump from your videos.

Got a question for you 50’s. I replaced my power steering pump, started my car, and it sucked the fluid right down straight away with a lot of air. Btw, I did all the things your supposed to do before starting it. Anyway, created a huge air pocket somewhere in my system and I can’t get rid of it. My power steering isn’t working and there is a lot of tiny air bubbles I can see in the reservoir. It also kinda cherns in the filling tank when the car is started so I know the pump is doing something. How can I go about getting this huge air pocket out of the system?

For my car, suddenly it was extremely hard to steer and park and on turning it makes a knocking noise(not too loud). Initial 0-25mph pickup makes a louder noise than usual. After removing the belt and jiggling the pump shaft by hand makes a small clicking noise but it doesn't move in or out, so doesn't look like it is broken. Not sure if fluid flow is choked or any other thing to diagnose and how?

I checked more, pump is fine and creates pressure when running. When pump and pressure hose is disconnected all fluid comes out of pump and nothing from the pressure hose. On moving steering some fluid goes back to the reservoir and comes out of pump. Could pressure hose be bad or rack-n-pinion be bad?

Sounds like there may be something in the lines--something blocking them. I would suggest a complete overhaul--pull out every single line including and especially the cooling loop that goes in front of the radiator and blow them out and/or poke the clog out with a wire.

I sheared off the bolt in the back when I did mine too. I tried but failed at drilling it out, so I ended up buying a new oil filter housing

Yeah I'm planning on grabbing one from a junkyard before the rebuild. I also need a new driver side engine mount bracket because the hold for the oil dipstick tube is stripped. Could do a helicoil but it's probably cheaper to get new parts.

$hiftyZ, there is at least one thread on E46Fanatics.com about your issue, you'll have to search. IIRC they used needle noise plyers to bust out the plastic ring then picked out the metal. Not sure. But you will definitely need a new hose.

I too just completed this - LF 20 - replacement, mainly due to overall stiff steering. The OEM shaft was intact, ...maybe the vanes had shared on the previous unit? Unfortunately, after the replacement, the steering is stiff as if it was only partially power-assisted. ' any thoughts?

Blockage in the lines maybe? You could pull them off and blow them out with compressed air.

I want to add that if you have the LF20 pump you're going to need a crawfoot extension to get the high pressure line off. Also, it's a hell of a lot easier to get to the banjo bolts from the top if you take off the CAI and surrounding intake boots. Also, if you're doing this job it is recommended you replace the power steering filter/reservoir as well and flush the old power steering fluid out so you don't contaminate your system and for it to last, otherwise you're gonna be running old fluid and you may shorten the life of all that work and money spent. Also, if you're doing this job, please replace the banjo bolt o-rings otherwise you're taking a chance on your system leaking power steering fluid. I should know, I just did this job not long ago after having the same issue as the 50s kid.

I've removed the LF20 from a junkyard car, I didn't need a crowfoot wrench for it? The line is just on the bottom instead of on the side.

I have a 2000 328i with a lf20 pump. I replaced it a year ago because the shaft sheared off....again same problem! My question to you is... can I upgrade to a lf30 pump and high pressure hose and will I have to make any modifications other than removal and assembly? One more...how do I know if the rack is bad?
@50sKid

+Terry Anderson the rack should be fine. You can replace it with the lf30 for sure you need the different hose like you said. Remember that the pump bracket is different

have replaced PS pump a few months ago.. and being a person who wants to know how things work I pulled mine apart ...not that impressed with the workings inside for the load they do.think the vanes could be a but heavier in size and by their size .wear seems to be to one point of the housing making rotation notchy.just looks like a regular service replacement item

I pulled the old one apart. Didn't see any abnormal wear, actually. I've pulled 3 or 4 other pumps apart (different pumps) and noticed about the same size vanes and same wear on the vanes as well.

my power steering was just messed up one morning out of the blue. I added little bit of fluid and the steering got better but no where near where it should be, I still have to wrestle the wheel when It comes to parking. what do u think it can be? there isn't a leak after a day of driving weeks of driving around. could it be the pump?

You have to bleed the system properly. To do so, jack the front end of the car up(both front wheels of the ground. Fill reservoir up and then crank your car up. Turn the steering wheel from left to right to get the air out of the system.
