There are so few videos out there about the ZHP. It’s a guaranteed future classic in the sense that BMW didn’t give any other non M car such attention to detail and careful factory modification, even the 850csi. These cars are so quick for the power output, they’re as quick as an S2000 in a straight line and will beat a 350Z on track (ZHP). Hold onto it and I would say in 5-10 years time they will command a hefty premium. The M engines are ‘peaky’, the 330 engine is probably the last 3.0 straight 6 BMW did where hp and torque are evenly displaced, giving a far better driving experience. LJK Setright would put this engine above that in the e46 M3 and I would agree.

P.S.: the ideal owner for ANY used BMW is someone who is capable of DIYing his own repairs. If you have to pay some 3rd party to fix every little thing that goes wrong on these cars, your BMW ownership experience will quickly become painful (financially).

Well done ! Good, honest review. Still got mine, bought new in `04 (AW, Alcantara, 6-spd.), still think it`s one of the best-balanced driver`s cars available. Happy Motoring !

@@moiseslopez7898 I can assure you as amazingly well-rounded as the car is, it doesnt pack half the fun factor of a CTS-V or M6 in terms of straight line speed. It will certainly be the cheapest option in terms of real world owning these cars however.

@@griffins7442 Good point, I thought it be fun to have the power for long road trips, uphills..etc. And also having the passengers not weight down the car as much since the V has 400hp. hmmm In other words I'd miss driving my Z06 because of passengers haha! I forgot to think about the cost of expendables like brakes and tires which are a lot bigger and faster cars, and probably fuel as well. thanks for the advice!

That’s one hell of a first car. It was my third car at the time and my second BMW after my e30. Huge improvement over e30 and e46

Looking at one just like this at the moment, I have an 08 335i and it is one high maintenance lady. I prefer the E46 body style and know this motor is much more reliable than the N54

How much has maintenance been?

Besides normal maintenance such as oil changes, tires, etc.. I haven’t had to do anything over the past few years of ownership.

I have a 2005 ZHP manual coupe and i must have splashed it through a puddle of Holy water, No i don't baby it what so ever, and also have had absolutely 0 issues with it...it concerned me how reliable it was so i thought it was a Toyota but all my friends confirm it is a BMW. ...3 years of owner ship ///M PACKAGE with reliability! People this is the best bang for your buck hands down. Go sell the mini van and buy a ZHP.

ZHP did not come with "better" control arms or stiffer bushings. The only difference was struts, springs, and sway bar. That's all.

ZHP control arms are most certainly different than the standard E46 parts, as is the steering rack (it's a quicker ratio). A quick google search for "ZHP E46 control arms" and "yellow tag steering rack" will net you quite a few results that illustrate the differences. I have an E46 328i sedan myself and have been upgrading with a lot of the ZHP bits as I do maintenance.

@@dsmraver - No sir they are the same. Per BMW factory parts catalog, they are part number 31126783376, there was no option or annotation for ZHP. Only the struts had M-Tech annotations. I checked BMWs factory parts catalog, and its not showing a different P/N, meaning the rack is the same rack as any E46.

yes. about 1/3 of zhp sedans in the us are automatic.
