Thanks everyone for watching! A few things to clear up: Yes, I know the music is too loud. The video export compressed the sound in a weird way, and when I released this video, I didn't think I would be making a full channel! (Or I would have been more careful). On to the BMW... There are other maintenance things do to, that will greatly help you get the car up to tuning standards. You should look into re-doing your VANOS seals. This will re-gain lost low end torque. There are also a few bushings that are probably shot. Replace the rear trailing arm bushings, and replace the front control arm bushings at least. Replacing the small bushings in the shift linkage will sharpen the shifter feel up as well. On to performance... Once you get proper tires and brakes, consider looking into a real alignment. Front camber plates will help you get the front to grip, and the factory camber adjustment is minimal. Front camber plates will get you between -2 and -4 (ish) degrees of camber. There are lots of options to look up. Once you have those, have a proper alignment done. This will drastically chance the way the car handles if done properly. If you have any questions feel free to leave it here and I, or someone else will hopefully answer it for you. NO QUESTION IS STUPID. ASK AWAY.

Hey man, thanks for the video, really helpful! The door seal rubber on the driver's side is completly rekt, I want to change it. Obviously, I don't need to buy an original one, but I think it can be a bit better, since it has the specific size and it's a closed system (if I were to buy one online, it would come like 3 meters instead of the specific size, which I'd have to cut, etc etc). What do you think?

Christopher Kennedy depends on your goals. Sound? Power? Headers will give you a good boost and are inexpensive but then you have to worry about emissions issues.
@hugocosta9017

Cutting isn't the problem, my biggest concern is that the eficiency of the rubber seals may be lower with the cut. But anyway, I'll have to check out the prices of an original one and see the difference.

I have owned three consecutive BMW e46s (all 325xi). I buy them used with 150k+ miles for $3500-4500 and run them hard until they aren't worth the maintenance and then they become parts cars. They are a riot to drive, especially in the winter. They have the most wonderful awd system (60/40 rear/front) power distribution. They are meant for hitting that little button that turns the warning lights on and the traction control off. Living in northern Michigan driving in the snow has become my favorite winter sport, 60mph and sideways and being well in control is a damn good feeling. I keep these cars generally stock aside from fitting a better stereo in and some after market rims for my snow tires. Maintenance is minimal in my opinion, no more or less than most cars... and I run these things hard. Many valid points in this video, one thing to add for more performance is weight reduction. One of my parts cars is being turned into a hillclimb rally mobile so I am in the process of removing as much as possible, ie speakers, door panels, seats, etc. If you have ever wanted a fun, inexpensive car to rip around in, just buy an e46.

You are exactly right. Maintaining an E46 is very satisfying. I've had my 325xi for about 3 yrs now and started with an engine replacement (last owner sucked with oil changes), replaced everything during that; coolant system, belts, OFHG, PCV, plugs, fluids, bushings. Replaced 3/4 axles and some diff seals, and miscellaneous along the way, but you know what? Its nice to have a car that is RELIABLE from maintenance, especially in -40 below winters in MN. The E46 is a very nice base to have a clean looking car, and adding some subtle mods - angel eyes, smoked corners, etc. - go a long way, and have gotten plenty of compliments. Is maintenance pricey? Yea, with any car it can be. But I have also learned a lot from owning this one car and enjoy working on her, makes me appreciate it that much more. This coming Spring gotta replace the rear suspension!

I like your advice, start with all the fluids and filters and work up. Mods for these are going to be like modding any NA engine, CAMS, ported headers, test pipe, better flowing exhaust, CAI will make power if installed to a colder location, chips will help to an extent, standalone ecu and dyno tune will always make more power, lightened flywheel, lighter pulleys, porting head, then polyurethane control arm bushes, sway bar, bushes, links, camber bolts etc.

I hope this is seen by the so called journalists who are stagnant and in ever decreasing circles as far as the most obvious tuning products are concerned. The fact that you mentioned that the cooling system will benefit from a refurbishment shows that you understand what many people don't. It is a refreshing change to see some common sense in this area kudos

if go to change tranny keep the diff ;) (3.38 ratio) - go for the 6 speed, it'll go to 250~ km/h on 6th gear and it's realy quick on takeoff from a dig. you`ll be suprised with the cars u can hang till the 3rd gear ;) tested myself with a buddy's merc e400 auto... no chance on a rolling but from a dig a had him by a car lenght. xD .... and keep an eye on your rear axle mounts after that ... they don't like heavy changes on tourque back there ;) maybe one hint more.. dont do off that hose of the exhaustflap.. there's a control valve behind the left cover in your trunk - just do a switch in there ;)
@socrates5573
@socrates5573 8 жыл бұрын
I already chiseled that flap XD, so fucking loud now XD. Is the 6-speed manual gonna direct fit my 02 330ci? On the realoem they say I only can use the 5-speed tranny, do they share the same drive shaft and guibo also all rest parts? During the swap I really don't want to stop the process and go to the junk yard to find some parts... I got a local offer for all swap parts including 5-speed tranny for C$300 BUT I have to replace all the pins for less headache. I just check the junk yard website, a 150k kms(about 10k miles) 6-speed tranny cost around C$700, dunno if it worth that much for fun driving, I only had 5-speed manual experience... About my car, just finished spark plugs yesterday, was thinking to save some time so didn't take off the ac filter frame, then spent way more time to change the back 2 spark plugs.. Now I'm waiting for the adjuster O ring coming, has a too lean and idle rough problem, also the hand brake need to be replaced the cable and shoes. BTW, fuck PrincessAUTO's shitty tools!
@15KRPM
@15KRPM 8 жыл бұрын
as i remember right, the 6speed gearbox was a bit longer, so driveshaft would not fit. the 6speed has exact the same ratios, so nothing changes there. it just makes the shorter diff setup fit perfectly, as you have 6 full usable gears and no overdrive (with 5gearbox top speed is around 225kmh on 3.38 diff). to your lean running problem - it's mostly an vacuum leak of oil-separator or its hoses there or ur disa is broken (be careful on removing it, so no parts fall into your intake mainfold) - just in case replacing the parts you ordered do not fix it.
@socrates5573
@socrates5573 8 жыл бұрын
Got it, thanks. Just phoned the guy who offered me the 5-spd tranny, he does have 6 speed whole set except driveshaft for C$200, so I just need to go to the junk yard to get a drive shaft, cheers! Yes, the o ring I'm waiting for is for the DISA, I think the oil-separator should be OK because of the low kms.
@15KRPM
@15KRPM 8 жыл бұрын
the disa unit usually suffers from the axle of the flap, it's made of "quality" plastik shit lol. it's going to get grinded, first starts to rattle and then the shaft just breaks. due to the nice fact its drilled inside you got an nice ~2mm leak directly to the mainfold. this will just keep repeating every ~100k km (same as thermostat ...)

Good video, another tip: If you want to combine proper maintenance with a potentially real power increase, replace or repair the VANOS unit and replace both cam sensors (intake and exhaust). On any E46 with a six and close to 100k this will be worn out. Doing this had an incredible effect on my 328Ci's power output. I did not do an actual power test but I would estimate at least 20% power increase at certain RPMs, close to factory level, judged from acceleration numbers. It also dramatically decreased fuel consumption (by 20%!). It also took care of some weird behaviours like stumbling at idle, power dip at 3000RPM etc. This will make the car much better and cheaper to run. Also vacuum leaks, like you touch on (DISA, intake rubber parts) is gold for performance.

Hola comment section, I own a 2001 325xi with a few modifications. Performance wise I am currently running a custom cat-back exhaust with an X pipe, performance headers, a 330 intake manifold, 330 injectors, a short ram intake with a pod filter (in conjunction with my mtech bumper I get a lot of cold air into the engine bay), I'm also running carbon ceramic breaks with drilled and slotted rotors, I'm also lowered about an inch and a half all around on maxspeed coilovers, I have pearlecent white style 42 rims wrapped in hankook ventus v2 tires, and I'm running 20 mm spacers in front and 30 mm in back for a flush tucked look and wider wheel base. Since I've done a lot of the "obvious" stuff I've been looking into rounding out my build by buying a lightweight flywheel/performance clutch kit and buying a pre-tuned ecu that is customized for my car based on its mods. I'm also looking at snagging some braided break lines, a braided clutch line, and adjustable rear camber arms. I mainly wanted to reach out and ask if anyone knew of some reputable flywheel kits and pre-tuned ECU's for a 325 because these are the two mods I'm looking into the most at the moment. But, I also wanted to ask if there are any other performance mods I might have missed! Maintenance wise I've replaced spark plugs, radiator, expansion tank, valve cover seal, intake manifold seal, vanoss line, PCV breather lines, oil, coolant, air filter, injectors, and front drive axles. I plan on doing some weight reduction in the future but I'm currently focused on power mods. Let me know what you think I should look into! And if you have a question about my car or its mods please feel free to ask away! Thanks!

Quick tips as I have been dealing with an high kms e46 maintenance is big, just get the stuff done that is most important, the things that are going, I have noticed a difference with the cold air intake with a muffler delete, will be installing header and getting a tune, but after maintenance for some speed gains add 18' wheels, cold air intake, free up that exhaust cause they are super restrictive, especially the first resonator, muffler and cats, if able a m50 intake manifold will be great for n/a and turbo builds, but honestly get the mods you want on then the tune as tunes can be pretty pricey if you have a ms45, also x3 rear diffs are a great upgrade and bolt right on, but I think with the ci or just the 330 trim you will need a different driveshaft or modify your existing but please don't quote me on that 😂 but, if you want to put serious power down you will need forged pistons/ rods and forged camshaft as the ones in a 325 are cast and can't handle a lot of boost (usually anything over 7psi to be safe)

If you need to do a clutch get rid of the damn dual mass fly wheel, very large problem. Valve cover gasket and oil filter gasket a must on these cars so I do agree. Replace the rear main while doing the solid flywheel and upgrade the clutch...... I wont name the brand I went with but night and day difference. Straight in line 6cyl is a great engine no doubt! But trust me this car will bring you a ton of problems like mentioned. There is one thing that is not brought up in forums and on some sites is the evaporators going on these cars. I have changed a few in my time. They will go and it’s not an easy job.

It's an e46, so before you even think about adding power mods, reinforce the rear sub-frame mounts. Have the plates welded in and use the proper structural foam in the trunk cavities. Before you even buy an e46, check for sub-frame mount cracks. And remember, the harder you drive the car, the more likely it is to start cracking, so don't wait to get it done. At this point, the car is already over a decade old. The fuel pump will need replacing sooner rather than later. Get the Walbro 255lph kit (or similar) for the e46. It's cheaper ($200 vs $400) and better. Get rid of the old mechanical fan, as well. They like to explode when the bearings start going bad on the water pump. When that happens, you lose just about everything in the engine bay that is plastic or rubber and will end up with a dented hood. Replace it with a Spal 16in puller fan. Remove the electric aux fan and use the controller box from the aux fan to control the Spal. Of course, this is stuff I learned and have done for my M3. There will be differences in different models. YMMV.

i think most timing chains last 300k miles or more they have automatic tensioners that take up slake in the chain as it gets worn. changing the oil every 3000 to 5000 miles instead of 15000 miles like bmw suggest. keeps timing chains and the rest of the engine in good shape also keeps gaskets from getting hard and leaking, and the vanos from getting clogged up with dirt. this guy in the video is mostly correct about all the things that need to be replaced to keep these car running. the power steering pumps fail around 100kmiles. waterpump and thermostat must be replaced every 60kmiles. the engine cannot ever be overheated or run hot, or it will blow a head gasket, so all cooling system items must be kept in good working order. radiator and coolant recovery tank and hoses must be replaced every 120k miles. belts and belt tensioners and idler pulleys need to be replaced every 75k miles.

I have a grand Cherokee Laredo v8 5.2. And all I did was remove the pad filter and add a pipe to the intake box facing the front grill..... And I have to when ever I approach a hill I can fill the engine just inhale up the hill smoothly without pressuring the engine inhale air and trying to maximize power......so it does work and I Belize it increase fuel economy..... And if u want extra cold air put some vix in the entrance of the pipe of the cold air intake lol have a nice day...

I’ve had an E46 since new. IMO, all the tuning and mods in the world, aside from forced induction, just improve the driving experience. Making a car “fast” is relative to other stuff on the road or track. You can put thousands of dollars into a 330 in cams, headers and exhaust, chip, diff, tires, clutch, flywheel, shifter linkage, CF hoods and trunks, suspension, and brakes. And in the end, you’ll still get beat in a straight line by a new Camry. Don’t mod these things if you want a fast street machine. If you want a fast track machine, maybe, but there are other great options that probably are better platforms. If you want just want a fun car and a fantastic driving experience, go ahead and get an E46 and mod it up. At the end, you’ll still be slow in a straight line though and for the money you put into it in mods, you might come close to an E46 M3 at this point.

For engine stuff you need exhaust, cams, procharger and cooling. Also you need stronger a stronger head gasket, like for example carbon fibre so it can hold the higher rpms. The reason I said procharger is because it is a lot cheaper, waaay easier to install and it still makes a lot of power!

lsd? weld the diff instead. and cold air intakes do work. you don't get a big gain in hp, but it helps, and is healthy for the engine. your letting it get more air it CAN already get. factory filters restrict. now its getting more air in you headers, can get wider diameter exhaust so all that extra air can move. hell you can even go a little bigger with injectors too. and colder air is more dense. only if you have it done right. pipe going down towards front lower area of engine bay, away from fan areas where its blowing warm air around, usually filter located around fog light area where bumper grill let's air in. BUT, you don't want to go too low, especially if you don't have engine cover underneath. when its raining your engine will become a shop vac and suck water getting splashed around. you want to have it in that right spot so it can get the cool air coming in by bumpers grill by fog light. I believe it's the e46 csl it has another Hole by the fog light on the left side only specifically for the air to go in through a tube to the filter.

We have had our 2004 325xi for 15 years now, my dad is the first owner. In just over a week the car ended up in the shop twice! Brake and oil lights both went on, only to find out that our brakes are gone, our oil gasket is leaking (we also had to get an oil change, my dad accidentally poured ATF into the oil!), and the worst part, the rear coil springs were cracked and the rear struts were leaking. Very expensive repairs, and probably the last repairs my dad will do. Because next year, this car will be MINE, and I am NOT COMPLAINING.

I will tell you how we modify our e46 in europe. Buy 330diesel 204bhp. Then bigger turbo gtb2260vk from 330d e90 , e60 335d injectors, new bigger intercooler,cp 3 fuel pump , remapping and custom ceramic clutch set up. We get ~350hp-380hp and 600-700nm. All costs around 3000euros, so it is like 3500 dollars. So yea, good luck "tuning" your atmospheric petrol engines with cold air intakes +15bhp ;DDD .

I'll tell you how to REALLY modify your E46 in europe: drop the sub-frame and have some welder reinforce the crap out of it before attempting anything that gives you more power. Or you know, toss on a bigger turbo and do burnouts until your subframe either falls off or falls IN. Common issues seen even on a 320D is cracking and rust on the sub-frame mounts.

Who? me or Bigtime? commenting really doesn't work well on youtube nowadays. If it's me then i'm talking about the well known sub-frame issues with the e46 chassis wich under stress will cause the body of the car to flex, introducing microfractures in the sub-frame mount wich will lead to bigger fractures and rust. It's an expensive fix and in most countries these kinds of repairs have to be done by someone with a lisense to do these kinds of repairs.
